op ed review 10/2

A record-high 81% of Americans are dissatisfied with the way the country is being governed.

Nearly half of Democrats say they are not exactly excited about voting in the upcoming 2012 elections.

Only 58% of African Americans now hold “strongly favorable” views of Obama.

“Liberal Newsweek Editor Admits: Obama 'Wasn't Ready' to Be President” Now she tells us!

In an interview with Sean Hannity, former Clinton adviser and campaign manager Dick Morris stated that, after speaking with a Democratic strategist, he thinks it is “very possible” that President Obama might bow out of the 2012 race

Germany says President Obama’s plan to boost the EU rescue fund is a "stupid idea" and told the White House to sort out its own mess before giving gratuitous advice to others. "Obama's lecture on the euro crisis … is overbearing, arrogant and absurd…"

"….pitiful and sad." says a German financial newspaper.,1518,788807,00.html

President Obama is in deep trouble in the key swing states of Ohio and Pennsylvania, which combined with Florida will determine the outcome of the 2012 election.

Vice President Biden probably got a trip to the woodshed after he told a radio station that voters should hold President Obama, not former President Bush, accountable for the poor state of America’s economy.

Herman Cain pulled off a shocking upset victory in Florida’s Presidency 5 Straw Poll on Saturday. The Georgia businessman won more votes than the Republican primary's frontrunners -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney -- combined.

The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has written a letter to President Obama warning him that his administration will “precipitate a national conflict between church and state of enormous proportions” if it does not “end its campaign against DOMA, the institution of marriage it protects, and religious freedom.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon has decided that military chaplains may perform same-sex unions, whether on or off a military installation.

The Census Bureau admitted that it had “artificially inflated the number of same-sex couples” in the United States, initially reporting a number that was about 40 percent higher than what it now believes is accurate.

In its quest to promote taxpayer-funded entitlement programs, the Obama Administration has actually rewarded one state with a $5 million bonus for its efficiency in adding food-stamp recipients to already bulging rolls.

The federal government has doled out more than $600 million in benefit payments to dead people over the past five years. In one case, the son of a beneficiary continued receiving payments for 37 years after his father's death in 1971. The payments - totaling more than $515,000 - were only discovered when the son died in 2008.

Crony socialism: The Obama Administration is giving $737 million to a company where Nancy Pelosi’s brother-in-law happens to be the number two man. “It’s as if Solyndra never happened.”

In addition to the failed company Solyndra, at least four other solar panel manufacturing companies receiving in excess of $500 million in loan guarantees from the Obama administration employ executives or board members who have donated large sums of money to Democratic campaigns.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says he doesn’t dispute a Harvard economist's estimate that each job in the White House's jobs plan would cost $200,000.

The Department of Energy is set to announce whether nine federal loan guarantees amounting to $6.5 billion for green energy projects will get final approval. The number of full-time, permanent jobs they would create? a grand total of 283. That is nearly $23 million per job.

Great moments in socialized medicine: In the UK, doctors say that patients with terminal cancer should not be given life-extending drugs. The treatments give false hope and are too costly for the public purse, they warned.

Coca-Cola’s Chief Executive said the US is becoming a less friendly business environment than China.

Dorthy Rabin “The Cain Mutiny” 9/28

The pundits busy divining the reasons Herman Cain won that Florida straw poll so handily can't be blamed -- it was a compelling spectacle and a distinctly satisfying one as straw poll results go. To have listened to the candidate's prescriptions in his speech to the delegates Saturday was to see why. Everything he told the audience had been said, in one way or another, by most of the leading Republican candidates. The difference here was -- is -- Mr. Cain's unfailing capacity to speak as though from a core of fire deep inside him. An irresistible strength -- as is the mordant humor he brings to the battle.

So it happens that he can deliver a steely jibe about defense cuts ("You don't put a bulls-eye on the backs of our men and women in uniform") or the way America's wars must be fought ("the mission is victory . . . If we are not in it to win it, we will not be in it") and make audiences feel they'd never heard anything so bracing.

This is no small achievement. And it's why the conventional explanation of the straw poll results -- that it was all about the Republicans' dissatisfaction with the current crop of candidates -- seems inadequate. It would be far closer to the truth to say that those straw poll delegates were responding to a voice whose fire had touched them, warmed them, spoken for them.

An early response to the Florida poll results came from a friend, historian Alan C. Kors, who observed in mock puzzlement: "So, the 'Tea Party racists' in a Republican straw poll chose the self-made black Herman Cain -- mathematician and successful businessman -- son of a cleaning woman and a janitor, as their choice of nominee for the presidency of the United States. Well! What a bigoted group, what a caste society!"

It's an observation whose point wouldn't be lost on Herman Cain.

"Most socialists are not about economic prosperity. Oh, they'll use Keynesian theory that deficit spending stimulates economic growth to justify their demand for more government expenditures. But in the end, Obama's 'stimulus' package wasn't even fair to John Maynard Keynes……Before he commandeered the $868 billion, he assured us it would go to shovel-ready jobs and get people back to work again. It was only after the fact that he cynically laughed in our faces about the unavailability of such jobs. (He's doing the same thing all over again with his latest jobs bill.) Despite his promise that he would strictly account for this money and watchdog against its waste, he threw gobs of it away to locations with phantom ZIP codes, to ACORN-like political allies, to unions and to corrupt environmental wastelands, such as Solyndra. There was no private-sector economic multiplier effect for any of Obama's stimulus expenditures. The only multiplier effect in this and his other spending bills was in the public sector. Obama furtively tucked into these bills many perpetually sustaining federal programs that would remain with us, continue to grow and further choke the private sector. Thus, if you measure Obama's promise of hope and change against his true intention, he might well be succeeding. As one who believes that America's free market is unfair, he has gone a long way toward shaking up that structure -- and he's not even close to being finished."

"Another part of this ['jobs'] bill provides for yet another year of unemployment insurance. That gets us close to three years of federal benefits one can collect before being required to look for a job. Again, progressives somehow imagine that most people will spend every week of those three years determinedly beating the bushes for employment. Spare me. The overwhelming majority of people will spend virtually the entire three years living off the fat of the taxpayer-underwritten land, and only start looking for a job when the government gravy train gets perilously close to the last stop. In addition, does anyone but a progressive believe that three years of not working will have no effect on someone's job skills? Ergo, progressives, whose economic policies have turned people into long-term wards of the state, want those same people to be able to sue someone else if they 'feel' they were discriminated against during a job interview. And according to the president, this is the kind of thinking that will produce another 2.6 million jobs. Good luck with that, my re-distributionist comrades."

"As its own contribution to the end of the world as we know it, the Obama administration has just released a document called 'Living Within Our Means And Investing In The Future: The President's Plan For Economic Growth And Deficit Reduction.' If you're curious about the first part of the title -- 'Living Within Our Means' -- Veronique de Rugy pointed out at National Review that under this plan debt held by the public will grow from just over $10 trillion to $17.7 trillion by 2021. In other words, the president's definition of 'Living Within Our Means' is to burn through the equivalent of the entire German, French and British economies in new debt between now and the end of the decade. You can try this yourself next time your bank manager politely suggests you should try 'living within your means': tell him you've got an ingenious plan to get your spending under control by near doubling your present debt in the course of a mere decade. He's sure to be impressed."

-Mark Steyn

"The night before the Florida straw poll, Morgan Freeman appeared on CNN. He is maybe the country's most beloved actor. He declared the Tea Party racist, and the Republicans at large racist. He said our attitude is, 'Screw the country. We're going to do whatever we [can] to get this black man out of here.' Apparently, Tea Party activists want to replace 'this black man' with Herman Cain. But does the Left regard Cain as black? He was raised by his janitor father and housemaid mother in Georgia. President Obama was raised by his white grandparents in Hawaii. But he's a left-winger, you see. So he wins -- he's blacker than thou, or blacker than Cain."

-Jay Nordlinger

"There's one sure way for Republicans and conservatives to lose the 2012 presidential election -- split over who their presidential nominee will be, and fail to go all-out to support the winner. ... If Obama is not to be re-elected in 2012, Republicans need to get their act together, decide on a nominee, and back him or her to the hilt. ... It's important to recall that Ronald Reagan outraged some Republicans when as California's governor he raised taxes and signed an abortion bill and became the first California governor to sign a no-fault divorce law. Despite all this, he still went on to become the greatest U.S. president of our lifetime. If he were alive today and we were to nominate him in 2012, I wonder which wing of the GOP his opponents would come from. Regardless of the outcome of such a confrontation, Republicans will have to either hang together or hang alone. ... Put it this way: Who do you hope will be the president when 2013 dawns: Barack Obama or a Republican?"

-Michael Reagan

New York theater critic and Pulitzer Prize finalist Michael Feingold has a new idea to fight poverty and bring art to the masses. He thinks the 53 billionaires in New York City should be murdered and their assets seized to fight poverty… And to build a repertory theater. After all, they all stole it from the workers.

“Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength”, a campaign by the progressive group The Agenda Project, took credit for a member of the audience who asked President Obama to raise his taxes during a town hall meeting in Silicon Valley.

Democrats and the Obama campaign are rolling out a new voter registration website as part of an aggressive early effort to help get supporters back to the polls., officially a project of the Democratic National Committee, is intended to offer one-stop-shopping for voters with interactive registration instructions for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

An Iranian Christian pastor is facing possible execution for apostasy. The 11th branch of Iran's Gilan Provincial Court has determined that he has Islamic ancestry and therefore must recant his faith. “Iran is one of the very few countries in the 21st century where authorities would drag an individual before a court of law and force him to choose between his faith and his life….”

Suspected al-Qaeda militants have severed the hands of two people, including a 15-year-old boy, who stole electrical cables in a southern Yemeni town. The militants cut off the teenager's hand with a sword in front of dozens of residents of Jaar, in the troubled southern province of Abyan, before taking the limb around town for all to see.

A new Zogby poll puts Herman Cain at the top of the Republican field, as the top choice of 28% of poll respondents. Rounding out the top three are Rick Perry at 18%, and Mitt Romney at 17%. Fourth place goes to Ron Paul at 11%.

“Herman Cain is a meticulous CEO whose life story is the essence of the American dream. His campaign, like his life, will be the sum of his focused planning plus his irrepressible personality and persona. He has a connection with people that is amazing, and for some reason, he just looks and sounds exactly as a man with his experiences should. And having stared stage 4 cancer in the eye and beaten it, he is fearless -- and his "give a damn" is broke.…..He may still be a long shot, but he's a much shorter shot than he has ever been. Don't be shocked by what happens.”

After months of hedging, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is giving serious thought to jumping into the ring for a GOP presidential run -- and could make his decision next week…”

Gov. Christie charged Tuesday that an indecisive White House has deepened the nation's economic pain, and he accused President Obama of preparing to divide the country to win re-election next year. The Republican governor…..also warned in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library that the nation's credibility abroad was being damaged by troubles at home.

“Is Chris Christie the next Ronald Reagan?”

Mike Huckabee, the former presidential candidate and certified non-fan of Rick Perry, says the Texas governor isn't ready for the 2012 primetime.

The Republican primaries have been taking a weird, wrenching turn. The pattern could be described as chaotic, except that it has one consistent theme. That theme is that Republican voters are searching for someone, anyone, other than Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney ran a large national campaign for the nomination four years ago, so he is well-known to Republican primary voters. Too well known……

Bozell: No one thinks Barack Obama is sitting pretty in this race for the White House. The Real Clear Politics average of the mid-September approval-rating polls measures him at 43 percent approval, 51 percent disapproval. With these numbers, they should be measuring his political coffin. But to listen to the networks talk, it's the Republican field that is a mess in desperate need of new talent, and its debate audiences are a bloodthirsty horror movie.

Frank Meile: When last we left the revolutionary Bill Ayers, he was furiously scribbling the "Weatherman" manifesto in 1969 and learning how to build nail bombs while actively encouraging not just one, but "two, three, many Vietnams," in an effort to bring down the United States government…… As envisioned by Ayers and his co-authors in 1969, once the public gets acclimated to being guaranteed a growing panoply of social services such as welfare, medical care and housing, "The state cannot provide the services it has been forced to assume responsibility for, and needs to increase taxes and to pay its growing debts while it cuts services..." That - as Ayers was smart enough to see - would lead inevitably to social turmoil and financial disaster, and thus might precipitate the communist revolution that SDS hoped would topple the United States government. We may still get to see if they were right - because that is exactly where we are today. One step ahead of us is Greece, but the growing number of entitlements in our federal budget has already made us an economic basket case, with no cure available except the unthinkable: massive cutbacks in spending that would lead to huge social unrest.

Unable to sell its electric cars here, Government Motors plans to partner with the Chinese and possibly give away its taxpayer-funded technology. The administration's industrial policy picks another loser. Here we thought the purpose of President Obama's green jobs and green energy policies was to embrace the technologies and energy sources of the future in order to compete with countries like China. Instead, taxpayer dollars may have once again been wasted — this time to provide jobs for and technology to those we should be competing with.

Let’s not set that bar too high……..President Obama claims his new jobs bill will be better than his old jobs bill, which only created one job that went to a guy named Bill…….Obama says he will be reforming No Child Left Behind. That’s not to be confused with Michelle Obama’s childhood obesity campaign, “No Child Left With a Big Behind.”…..Starting in 2015, women in Saudi Arabia will be allowed to run for office. Of course, if you’re caught voting for them, you’ll get stoned to death, but it’s progress…….A new study found that people who are depressed have a greater risk of stroke. "[W]hen the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliament was advised by an artful man, who was governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them; but that they should not do it openly, but weaken them, and let them sink gradually."

"Every collectivist revolution rides in on a Trojan horse of 'emergency.' It was the tactic of Lenin, Hitler, and Mussolini. In the collectivist sweep over a dozen minor countries of Europe, it was the cry of men striving to get on horseback. And 'emergency' became the justification of the subsequent steps. This technique of creating emergency is the greatest achievement that demagoguery attains."
