op ed review 5/17

THIS WEEK’S NEWS
The targeting of conservatives by the IRS started earlier and was more extensive than the IRS acknowledged last week, according to a draft IRS inspector general report obtained by ABC News…. the IRS began targeting “Tea Party or similar organizations” in March 2010.
Anti-conservative effort was directed from Washington, D.C., and was not a rogue operation as the administration has claimed.

The White House released 94 pages of emails which directly contradict claims by White House press secretary Jay Carney and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the revisions of the famous Benghazi talking points were driven by the intelligence community and show heavy input from top Obama administration officials, particularly those at the State Department.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Michael Graham  5/17
Has President Nixon been replaced by Sergeant Schultz? The “Smartest President Ever” has disappeared. The Barack Brain Trust long-touted by liberals is gone — replaced by hacks whose rallying cry is straight from Stalag 13—“I know nothing. Nothing!”

The top law enforcement agency in the land spied on the top news-gathering organization, secretly seizing phone records from their home and cell phones. They did so without the legally required notice to the Associated Press. And what did Attorney General Eric Holder say when asked why his Department of Justice would do such a thing? “I do not know why that was or was not done,” the attorney general told the House Judiciary Committee Wednesday. “I simply don’t have a factual basis to answer that question.” Notice his answer isn’t just “I don’t know why we didn’t notify the AP as required by law.” It’s “I don’t know whether we did or not.”

This isn’t Attorney Stephen J. Shmuck of Dewey, Cheatem & Howe. This is the attorney general of the United States, whose agency has just been caught conducting a potentially illegal surveillance dragnet against 100 reporters and editors. And he knows nothing about it? Folks, your attorney general knows nothing about everything:

At one point, when asked who authorized the AP spying, he actually said “I can’t say as a matter of fact I would probably 95 percent, 99 percent certain the deputy attorney general acting in my stead was the one who authorizes the subpoena.” A staffer finally brought him a note confirming it was the deputy AG.

Holder told Congress the White House found out about the Obama administration’s surveillance when they “read it in the paper.” He said he wasn’t involved because “I recused myself.” When asked when he recused himself: “I am not sure.”

And thus the Obama defense is laid bare: “We’re not corrupt — we’re just really, really stupid!”

How did U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice end up with carefully whitewashed talking points regarding Benghazi? Who knows? Except that the email trail “directly contradict claims by White House press secretary Jay Carney and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the revisions of those talking points were driven by the intelligence community and show heavy input from top Obama administration officials,” Stephen Hayes reports in The Weekly Standard.

Hillary Clinton testified that she was a hands-on part of the State Department’s response to the Benghazi attacks. So who stripped the talking points of their facts? She has no idea. And why was Rice — who had nothing to do with Benghazi — picked to hit the Sunday TV show circuit and spread the bogus “it was a videotape!” story in the first place? Your guess is as good as Obama’s.

What we do know is that the final talking-points product — that Carney assures us came directly from the CIA and no one else! — was so devoid of facts that then-CIA director David Petraus said, “Frankly, I’d just as soon not use this.” So why did the White House use it? Nobody knows!

After a week of shoulder-shrugging “whatevers” regarding the IRS scandal, Obama now tells us he’s mad as heck and not going to take it anymore when it comes to targeting people based on politics. He claims he found out about his administration’s IRS abuses by reading it in the papers, too (Note to self: Make sure White House newspaper subscriptions stay paid in full!) But this story has been around for at least two years. Congress held hearings featuring members of the Obama administration. According to media reports, people inside the White House were aware of the practice at least a year ago.

Forget “we’re smarter than you.” The new White House motto is: “Dumb — It’s the New Hotness!”

FROM OTHER COLUMNS
"[L]ook at Obama in this statement in Denver: 'I am constrained ... by the system that our Founders put in place.' That is an unwitting statement of truth. He is constrained. What does constrained mean? It means things I can't do. Why is he even thinking about things he can't do? There are things he wants to do. There are all kinds of executive orders and waiving of the presidential wand to make it happen he would love to do. But the Constitution's in his way, and he wishes it weren't. Be wary, folks, of any politician who talks about the Constitution and uses [phrases] like 'I am constrained.'"

GLOBALONEY
It happens about once a month here, on the barren foothills of one of America´s green-energy boomtowns: A soaring golden eagle slams into a wind farm´s spinning turbine and falls, mangled and lifeless, to the ground. Killing these iconic birds is not just an irreplaceable loss for a vulnerable species. It´s also a federal crime, a charge that the Obama administration has used to prosecute oil companies when birds drown in their waste pits, and power companies when birds are electrocuted by their power lines. But wind farms get a pass.

LEFTIST WATCH
You know the worm has turned when even MSNBC’s Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow hold their noses at the stench from Barack Obama’s scandals — when so many stories from the so-called liberal press now describe the erstwhile Messiah as “aloof,” “arrogant” and “holier than thou.”

ISLAM
The Islamic Society of Boston, the mosque attended by Boston Marathon bombing suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokar Tsarnaev, posted an article on its website in September 2004 that advocated for the beating of women as a last resort to force them to behave. “40 Recommendations for the Muslim Home.”

Robert Spencer:  How Mothers from Hell Raise Their Boys to Do Evil.   Zubeidat Tsarnaeva is all too typical of a Muslim world where children drink in conspiracy theories with mama's milk.

The note in the boat. The Joker said his brother Speedbump was a “martyr in paradise,” and that the victims in Boston were “collateral damage” for Muslim civilian casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan. He praised Allah and said, “When you attack one Muslim, you attack all Muslims.” The big question is, Why the monthlong blackout on the note in the boat? Why didn’t the feds release it immediately? And the answer is obvious. It didn’t fit the Politically Correct narrative, that the reasons for this shocking atrocity remained a mystery, a riddle, an enigma, wink wink nudge nudge.

ARTICLES
Malkin:  It´s always the "low-level" peon´s fault, isn´t it? When Democrats get caught red-handed abusing government powers and bullying their political enemies small and large, nobody at the top knows nuttin´. The buck stops ... in the janitors closet or something. Here´s what I know: While they pretend to champion privacy rights, top left-wing operatives have routinely ransacked and plundered through the private documents and personal records of conservative groups, business owners and public figures. Through it all, those on the right standing against government tyranny have refused to stand down. During the Clinton years, senior IRS official

Benghazi Reveals the Heart of Progressivism

As a metaphor for big government, it is hard to top the Justice Department’s seizing of journalists’ phone records from The Associated Press. Unless, of course, you think the best example is the Internal Revenue Service turning the screws on groups it viewed as conservative and, therefore, unworthy of fair treatment. Or maybe the winner is the sneaky spreading of ObamaCare’s tentacles, with insurance companies now predicting the law will drive up the cost of individual premiums by as much as 400 percent. There are no losers in this race to the bottom — except the American people. It is tempting

No contemporary American politician has benefited more from the power of good storytelling than Barack Obama. He vaulted from obscurity to the presidency on the power of narrative – invoking his biography and personal values to make a larger point about how he would lead the nation. So presumably no one understands more vividly than Obama and his close aides just how toxic and potentially paralyzing his situation has become this spring, as four distinct ethical and policy controversies have simultaneously converged.

LATE NITE
Leno:   This week will mark the 37th time House Republicans have tried to repeal Obamacare. If Republicans really wanted to do away with Obamacare they should just endorse it as a conservative non-profit and let the IRS take it down……..President Obama announced the appointment of a new acting commissioner of the IRS — the other guy was fired. See, they're called "acting commissioner" because you have to act like the scandal doesn't involve the White House…….A lot of critics are now comparing President Obama to President Nixon. The good news for Obama? At least he's no longer being compared to President Carter
