op ed review 1/19

THIS WEEK’S NEWS
After seven straight years of decline, the U.S. has dropped out of the top 10 most economically free countries.

President Obama is ´chronically incapable´ of military strategy and ´clueless about what he wants to do in the world´ according to one of the UK´s most respected and senior military advisers.

Democrats are increasingly anxious about an onslaught of television ads hitting vulnerable Senate and House candidates for their support of Obamacare.

Three House Democrats in three days announced retirement from Congress.
Five top Democratic chairmen retiring from the Senate.

Battling cancer, conservative Senator Tom Coburn, will step down.

Filmmaker Harvey Weinstein is one of President Obama’s biggest fundraisers. He says his new Meryl Streep film will make NRA ‘wish they weren’t alive’.
This is the same Weinstein who likes to make anti-catholic movies about “evil nuns”, carefully timed for release during the Christmas season.

Senate intelligence Committee report says the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi could have been prevented
Barry who? The president of what? It seems that our national media has experienced a collective memory lapse. The Senate intelligence report that was published earlier this week that concluded the Benghazi attack could have been prevented never mentions the name of the individual most responsible for the debacle.

Latinos set to surpass whites in California in March
Department of Homeland Security has been ferrying illegal alien children detained at the border to their illegal alien parents living in the United States
House Republican leaders are preparing for the first time to endorse legal status for many of the 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally
But new polling data from Gallup shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans do not think handling immigration reform is even close to a top priority for 2014.

Sarah Palin´s father, who worked multiple jobs and faithfully and honestly paid his taxes for fifty years, had never heard a word from the IRS. In 2008, his daughter was tapped to run for vice president of the United States. Since that time, he has been, in his words "horribly harassed" six times by the agency.

The Obama administration’s proposal to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour could result in as many 1,084,000 jobs eliminated from the work force, according to a new study conducted by the Employment Policies Institute (EPI)
New study shows “Extending Unemployment Benefits Increased Unemployment by More than 3 Percentage Points.”

A prominent consultant to health insurance companies recently wrote in a remarkably candid blog post that, while Obamacare is almost certain to cause insurance costs to skyrocket even higher than it already has, “insurers won’t be losing a lot of sleep over it.”  How can this be?  Because insurance companies won’t bear the cost of their own losses—at least not more than about a quarter of them.  The other three-quarters will be borne by American taxpayers.

Now we have scientific proof:  People who regularly visit a place of worship are less likely to get involved in low level crime and delinquency, according to new research.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Arizona cannot enforce its ban on abortions at 20 weeks of pregnancies.

Health care death committees in Britain:  A grandmother in the UK has been ‘left to die’ by the NHS after being refused life-saving chemotherapy--because her cancer is not ‘exceptional’ enough.

Global Warming A Back Door To Socialism - And Now Even The UN Admits It
Investor’s Business Daily  1/16

Power: As evidence discredits global warming, resistance to such facts by green elites reveals their real aim is bringing socialism in through the back door. But don't take our word for it. Listen to the climate change boss at the U.N.

Christiana Figueres, with the lumpy title of executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), came right out and said it: Democracy is a poor political system for fighting global warming. The really good model is communist China.   China is "doing it right," she told Bloomberg News Tuesday. "They actually want to breathe air they don't have to look at," she said with a straight face.

Maybe that's because for her information, China had breathed air it can see for decades under its command economy. Hot Air's Ed Morrissey points out that on the same day Figueres was praising China's top-down political system and denigrating democracies, China's capital, Beijing, was engulfed in a massive smog cloud that prompted authorities to order children, the sick and the elderly to stay inside.

Communist China has had one pollution crisis after another for decades. It's also the home to black rivers, polluted groundwater, destroyed lakes and some of the world's worst food standards — all fruits of a command economy where the public has no right to complain about anything because government knows best. Morrissey notes that the same smog blighting China now was a problem five years ago, during the 2008 Olympics. Some sign of "doing it right."

The only thing clear here is the real motive of global warm-mongers. They're less interested in cleaning up the Earth than in controlling human beings in the name of "the common good" — just as the Bolsheviks once did, first in Russia, and then in China, where the tyranny continues to this day.

Global warming alarmists "want to change us, they want to change our behavior, our way of life, our values and preferences," according to a man who knows a thing or two about communist regimes, former Czech President Vaclav Klaus. In a speech to Australia's Institute of Public Affairs in 2011, he stressed: "They want to restrict our freedom because they themselves believe they know what is good for us. They are not interested in climate. They misuse the climate in their goal to restrict our freedom. Therefore, what is in danger is freedom, not the climate."

Klaus, who fought communists all his life, admitted he may be "oversensitive." But "I am afraid that some of the people who spend their lives in a free society don't appreciate sufficiently all the issues connected with freedom. So my oversensitivity is like an alarm clock warning about the potential development, which I am really afraid of."  He pointed out that as global warming falls apart as a theory, its proponents grow more strident because their claim to power grows ever more tenuous.

"I feel threatened now, not by global warming — I don't see any — (but) by the global-warming doctrine, which I consider a new dangerous attempt to control and mastermind my life and our lives, in the name of controlling the climate or temperature."

"They don't care about resources or poverty or pollution. They hate us, the humans. They consider us dangerous and sinful creatures who must be controlled by them. I used to live in a similar world called communism. And I know it led to the worst environmental damage the world has ever experienced." But that's of no concern to Ms. Figueres, princeling daughter of a former Costa Rican president who's lived a life of privilege since birth and is now badmouthing democracy and praising communist systems.

She condemned as "very detrimental" Congress' refusal to pass the U.N.'s climate change agenda even as evidence reveals global warming as a hoax and the U.N. agenda as a threat to America's economic well-being.
In the world she inhabits, the people's interests don't matter — neither in the United States nor in pollution-choked China. All that matters is control, her control. In modern times, the only ecosystem in which such people can effectively exist is a communist one.

FROM OTHER COLUMNS
“While the creation of a traffic jam in a small New Jersey town shows the calloused ugliness too often found among political operators puffed up with their own power, this cannot compare with the threat to freedom when the Internal Revenue Service targets the administration’s political opponents during an election year. Nor can a traffic jam compare with the Department of Justice’s gun-running operation that led to the death of an American Border Patrol agent in the southwest or the State Department’s actions and inactions that led to the deaths of four American officials killed by terrorists in Benghazi.”

BOOKS, FILM
As incredible as it sounds, Hollywood has produced a patriotic movie for a change. “Lone Survivor,” the new war movie starring Mark Wahlberg, is so powerful in its depiction of the brutality of al Qaeda and its Taliban backers that it could awaken the American people to the reality of President Obama’s deliberate retreat in the face of this global danger. “‘Lone Survivor’ leaves box office shocked and awed,” is how USA Today described its debut. It depicts the grueling training of U.S. Navy SEALs and the sacrifices that American soldiers are making to keep Afghanistan free of Taliban and al-Qaeda

Throughout the book “Lone Survivor”, Luttrell registered distrust of liberals in the media and in Washington – and did so with a very direct eloquence. Here are 10 of the best examples from the book.

LEFTIST WATCH
“A new breed of website has sprung up, powered by social media, in which liberals congratulate themselves, and attempt to provide spiritual instruction on improving the world through their ideology……many people find the discipline of genuine religions daunting, unpleasant, and a general buzz-kill. Liberalism offers hedonism and self-congratulation in place of genuine contact with the numinous. It may not have any depth to it, but for those inclined to reject everything that came from their forbearers´ world, convinced that they have found a better, or at least a more pleasant approach to life, liberalism is a decent crutch.”

A report promoted heavily by NBC News Special Anchor Maria Shriver was funded by a ultra-left political group funded by George Soros. Earlier this week Shriver was all over NBC News and MSNBC to talk about a study titled "The Shriver Report: A Woman´s Nation Pushes Back From the Brink." The promotion of the report also allowed Shriver and NBC News to portray President Obama as "sympathetic to working mothers." This push focusing on women we see throughout the media, not just on NBC, is nothing more than the media prepping the battlefield to elect Hillary Clinton.

ARTICLES
With the possible exception of global warming fraud, it would be difficult to identify another major political issue more dependent upon innumerable, uncontrollable variables than the difference in what two persons might earn or deserve. In the case of both ideological causes, anyone claiming to have measured the variables, predicted them or solved for them in concocting a solution is nothing but a con artist. And what do con men do? They steal. Theft of rights or property is the primary instrument of left-imposed equality of any sort. The left sees this as necessary because we have equal rights, but not equal individual qualities.

Liberals who oppose efforts to prevent voter fraud claim that there is no fraud.  But New York City’s watchdog Department of Investigations has just provided the latest evidence of how easy it is to commit voter fraud that is almost undetectable. DOI undercover agents showed up at 63 polling places last fall and pretended to be voters who should have been turned away by election officials; the agents assumed the names of individuals who had died or moved out of town, or who were sitting in jail. In 61 instances, or 97 percent of the time, the testers were allowed to vote. The Board of Elections reacted in classic bureaucratic fashion by calling for DOI’s investigators to be prosecuted. “In one example, a 24-year female agent gave the name of someone who had died in 2012 at age 87…no problem, she was given a ballot……

Ann Coulter, David Limbaugh, Erick Erickson and Michelle Malkin have a new publisher in Washington, the expanding Christian conservative media empire of Salem Communications Corp., recently dubbed "the new power in conservative media." Salem completed the purchase of Eagle Publishing, which operates Regnery, the nation's leading conservative book publisher; Human Events, one of the oldest conservative news providers; and the popular website RedState, headed by Erickson.

It is always satisfying when one sees an insufferable jerk get his just comeuppance. And when the jerk is a bully who thinks he´s always right and all others, save his acolytes, are not only "always wrong" but "knaves and fools" as well, then it is especially sweet to see the jerk shown, on point after point, to have been consistently wrong. In "Krugtron the Invincible," economics historian Niall Ferguson uses Paul Krugman´s own words to filet the Keynesian economist.

“He was in high school and quite brilliant. The kind of kid who didn´t pick up a book all year and aced all of his honors and AP tests -- in complex subjects like Physics. He was also musically gifted. But he couldn´t stop smoking weed. The school and his parents did all they could; he even took up sports so he wouldn´t go home after school and smoke. The more he smoked, the more he slacked off, the less frequently he attended class, did his work, and participated in class. They finally expelled him. He was last seen walking on 101 in the wee hours of the morning on meth, punching and flailing at the police who pulled over to see if he was okay.”

REPUBLICAN CIVIL WAR
Fred Dryer, the former All-Pro NFL defensive end and Hollywood actor of shows like Hunter and Cheers, is furious at the Republican establishment for waging war against the Tea Party. He sees the establishment as surrendering to the mainstream media and accepting its stereotypes about conservatives.

NOTEWORTHY WEBSITES
A 15-minute test you take at home can show up the first signs of mental decline nearly as well as diagnostic exams. The questions range from simple feats of memory – writing the date, for example – to more complex everyday tasks, such as working out the amount of change needed when shopping.

WISE WORDS
“Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence; true friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks and adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.”

LATE NITE
Leno….Did you all watch the Golden Globes [Sunday] night? … Of course, the big winner … was ‘American Hustle,’ a film about the marketing of ObamaCare….. The White House announced that President Obama will visit Pope Francis in the near future. Pope Francis thinks Obamacare can be a success. Sure, he’s the Pope. He has to believe in miracles
