op ed review 5/20

THIS WEEK’S NEWS
The Senate on Wednesday rejected every single budget being offered this year, leaving the chamber - and therefore the federal government - without a plan to address Medicare, Social Security and the other major entitlement programs that are driving deficits and debt. In repeated votes, Democrats who control the chamber defeated four Republican proposals, including a plan that passed the House in March.

Congressional Democrats plan massive tax increases and crippling defense cuts after November. Why not now? Because the voters would realize the Obama presidency has set the stage for fiscal catastrophe.  Heritage Foundation senior fellow and former Treasury Department tax economist J.D. Foster recently warned that on New Year's Day, "some $494 billion in tax hikes will crash down on America's taxpayers and economy.”

Since Congress enacted its bipartisan spending deal one year ago, the federal debt has increased by $12,984 per household.

Would you hire President Obama as your financial adviser? Three years ago his administration invested more than $100 billion in taxpayer money to bail out General Motors. On Tuesday, the entire company, not just what the government owns, was worth less than $34 billion. By anyone’s definition, that investment is a glaring failure. Yet over the last few days the Obama campaign has flooded the airwaves with ads in battleground states claiming the bailout should be counted a rousing success.

President Obama openly spoke of repealing the Defense of Marriage Act at a fundraiser Monday, as he defended his personal view that gay couples should have the right to marry.
Newsweek has released the cover of their next issue, on the cover of which they depict President Obama with a rainbow halo and the title of 'The First Gay President'
The Washington Post has found that every one out of six of President Obama's top fundraising "bundlers" who have hauled in $500,000 or more publicly identify themselves as gay.

The Catholic Church has warned that it may sue the Obama administration for mandating that insurance plans provide birth control to women without a copay.

Democrat efforts to recall Wisconsin Gov Scott Walker are imploding.

After years of speculation, estimates and projections, the Census Bureau has made it official: White births are no longer a majority in the United States.

Breitbart News has obtained a promotional booklet produced in 1991 by Barack Obama's then-literary agency, Acton & Dystel, which touts Obama as "born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.

Autopsy results show 17-year-old Trayvon Martin had injuries to his knuckles when he died.
Alan Dershowitz:  A medical report by George Zimmerman’s doctor has disclosed that Zimmerman had a fractured nose, two black eyes, two lacerations on the back of his head and a back injury on the day after the fatal shooting. If this evidence turns out to be valid, the prosecutor will have no choice but to drop the second-degree murder charge against Zimmerman — if she wants to act ethically, lawfully and professionally. There is, of course, no assurance that the special prosecutor handling the case, State Attorney Angela Corey, will do the right thing.

President Obama's annual financial disclosure statement reveals that he is a wealthy man, with assets of as much as $10 million.

Joe Biden wants you to think he’s a “middle class Joe”  Here’s a picture of his home, said to be worth a cool $2,856,950.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Investors Business Daily  5/14

The Washington Post defends its Mitt Romney hit piece by claiming it didn't collude with the Obama White House on timing. Collusion isn't the problem. The fact that they both share the same goal is.

Three years ago, former CBS News correspondent Bernie Goldberg wrote the aptly titled book "A Slobbering Love Affair," in which he detailed how the mainstream press had gone above and beyond its own well-established liberal bias to take on the corrupting role of Obama's cheerleader, collaborator and protector.

Now having helped land Obama in office, the so-called independent press is determined to keep him there. Which helps explain why the Washington Post — the paper that still vigorously pats itself on the back for "bringing down" President Nixon — has been so willing and eager to bring down President Obama's opponent.

For those who haven't heard, the Post devoted the top of its Friday paper, along with two full pages inside, to chronicle Romney's alleged bullying ways in high school against a "presumed" homosexual back in 1965, when Obama was four years old.

A follow-up piece by the Post's ombudsman, Patrick Pexton, defended the article, mainly by trying to reassure readers that the paper didn't actively work with the White House on timing, even though the story hit the Web the day after Obama announced his "evolution" on gay marriage. Pexton quotes national editor Kevin Merida saying the expose "just happened to coincide with the time when President Obama made his statement."

The fact that the Post had to defend itself against this charge is telling. But the paper's defense is laughable.

Do they really expect us to believe that the piece, which had been in the works for weeks, "just happened" to appear online immediately after Obama's "historic" announcement, and just happened to lead with the suggestion that Romney was bullying a student he supposedly suspected of being gay?

The fact that the Post didn't actually collude with the White House is irrelevant. Everyone involved had to know the timing would have maximum anti-Romney effect.

Just try to imagine any mainstream media outlet making such a decision knowing that it would do maximum damage to Obama. To the contrary, the Post and the rest of the mainstream press have shown nothing but determined indifference to Obama's past, at least to those parts that would prove problematic.

But then again, why would they want to hurt the one they love?

FROM OTHER COLUMNS
"Last week the Washington Post ran a story attempting to portray presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney as a homophobic bully. Despite every effort to contain it, the story imploded, as factual inaccuracies came to light. Furthermore, the victim's own sisters (he died of liver cancer in 2004) claimed to have no knowledge of incident, with one of them telling ABC News, 'If he were still alive today, he would be furious.' Yet as is often the case with highly publicized news stories, other mainstream media outlets attempted to keep the thematic aspect of the piece alive, irrespective of the facts. ... Why is it necessary to portray Mitt Romney as a bully? So Barack Obama, the real bully in this presidential election contest, doesn't look as bad by comparison."

"I would like to make a rule that nobody ever again be tried for a hate crime. A crime is a crime, and whether the victim is a black, a Hispanic or a homosexual, should not make the punishment any more severe than if the victim is a WASP. One can safely assume that every crime is hateful to the victim. People who favor concentrating on 'hate' rather than 'crime' are the same noodle-heads who are unaware that 'social justice' is an oxymoron. Justice doesn't call for adjectives. Once they're added on, it ceases to be justice, which is why Lady Justice is always pictured blindfolded and why Martin Luther King pleaded for a colorblind society."

LEFTIST WATCH
A secretive network of left-wing billionaires and their political operatives descended on the luxurious Biltmore Hotel in Miami over the weekend to discuss strategy for the coming elections. The location of the conference had been kept a closely guarded secret by the members and guests of Democracy Alliance (DA), a collection of ultra-wealthy liberal donors formed in 2005.

Mitt Romney's support among registered voters who are women has grown and is slightly above President Barack Obama's, according to a poll released Monday

Obama ad calls Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital firm a ‘vampire’

House Democrats received training this week on how to raise the issue of race to defend government programs. The prepared content of a Tuesday presentation to the House Democratic Caucus and staff indicates that Democrats will seek to portray apparently neutral free-market rhetoric as being charged with racial bias, conscious or unconscious.

President Obama’s decision in February 2011 to hold the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina looked like a bold move to reclaim a state he’d won in 2008. Today, it’s more like an awkward fit. The state’s Democratic Party is mired in a sexual harassment scandal. Voters just approved a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, which conflicts with Obama’s view on the issue. Convention fundraising has been slow, and labor unions tapped to fill the financial gap are angry the convention will be in a city -- Charlotte -- with no unionized hotels.

“He’s back. And this time, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright threatens to engulf President Obama in a major scandal - one that could doom his re-election. Edward Klein in his recent biography of Mr. Obama, “The Amateur,” interviewed Mr. Wright about the president’s past. On tape and on the record, Mr. Wright claims that in 2008, the Obama campaign offered $150,000 to buy his silence. If this is true - and I stress if - Mr. Obama may have committed a crime, and if so, he should be prosecuted and sent to prison. Wrightgate could bring down the Obama presidency.”

“….if Obama’s pal Dr. Eric Whitaker did offer Rev. Wright $150,000 to stay silent for the duration of the campaign, as charged by Ed Klein, how exactly is that different from John Edwards’ pal Fred Baron giving Rielle Hunter money to stay out of the limelight for the duration of the campaign?”

“Just about every objective indicator foreshadows a huge re-election defeat for President Obama. With every day that passes, Mr. Obama looks more like a loser. That’s because there is doom and gloom everywhere you look. When government mathematical fudging is stripped away, unemployment is stuck over 10 percent. Economic growth is practically nonexistent and promises to slide downhill even more in the coming months with Europe and its banks rapidly collapsing. Due to Mr. Obama’s out-of-control deficit spending, the national debt is at a heart-stopping $15.7 trillion, which erases a whole year of economic output by our entire country.

ARTICLES
“Ahhhh, the remarkable life of Barack Obama. As told by -- Barack Obama. Who can forget the moment when he first ate a dog? His startling confession that he had pushed a girl? Or his confession of how he would get through the day: "Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it…" America's first drug-abusing president. What a memory…..”

“The Government Accountability Office tells Congress the Green River Formation out West contains an "amount about equal to the entire world's proven oil reserves." So why are we keeping it locked up on federal lands?.....just one small part of the U.S. is capable of outproducing the rest of the planet.”

Mark Steyn on “The spirit of Geert Wilder”:  “It’s not necessary to agree with everything Mr. Wilders says in this book — or, in fact, anything he says — to recognize that, when the leader of the third-biggest party in one of the oldest democratic legislatures on earth has to live under constant threat of murder and be forced to live in “safe houses” for almost a decade, something is badly wrong in “the most tolerant country in Europe” — and that we have a responsibility to address it honestly, before it gets worse. A decade ago, in the run-up to the toppling of Saddam, many media pundits had a standard line on Iraq: It’s an artificial entity cobbled together from parties who don’t belong in the same state. And I used to joke that anyone who thinks Iraq’s various components are incompatible ought to take a look at the Netherlands. If Sunni and Shia, Kurds and Arabs can’t be expected to have enough in common to make a functioning state, what do you call a jurisdiction split between post-Christian bi-swinging stoners and anti-whoring anti-sodomite anti-everything-you-dig Muslims? If Kurdistan’s an awkward fit in Iraq, how well does Pornostan fit in the Islamic Republic of the Netherlands?... It’s not “ironic” that the most liberal country in western Europe should be the most advanced in its descent into a profoundly illiberal hell. It was entirely foreseeable, and all Geert Wilders is doing is stating the obvious: A society that becomes more Muslim will have less of everything else, including individual liberty.”

LATE NITE:
Leno:  President Obama released his financial disclosure statement today. It turns out he is now worth over $10 million. So at least somebody is doing well in this economy……..Florida's board of education has decided to lower the passing grade on standardized tests after noticing a drastic drop in student passing scores. In other words, if the students don't do well enough on the tests, they don't teach them better, they just lower the bar. Why didn't we think of this before? Imagine how many more doctors we could've had right now.
