op ed review 6/28

THIS WEEK’S NEWS
A bad week. Terrorist attacks on three continents while Obama lights up White House in rainbow colors for “gay day”.

Supreme Court turns left:  Upholds the nationwide tax subsidies under Obamacare.  The justices said in a 6-3 ruling that the subsidies people currently receive do not depend on where they live, even though the law says differently.   Justice Scalia said, "We should start calling this law SCOTUScare." Using the acronym for the Supreme Court, Scalia said his colleagues have twice stepped in to save the law from what Scalia considered worthy challenges.
The opinion:  'In this instance, the context and structure of the Act compel us to depart from what would otherwise be the most natural reading of the pertinent statutory phrase'...
Justice Scalia called the ruling that upheld Obamacare subsidies as “pure applesauce” and “jiggery-pokery…….Words no longer have meaning.”
Sen. Sessions:This Should Dispel Illusion We Can Rely on Judges to Save Us”
Here’s an idea:  A House Republican on Thursday proposed forcing the Supreme Court justices and their staff to enroll in ObamaCare. Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas) said that his SCOTUScare Act would make all nine justices and their employees join the national healthcare law’s exchanges.

Then on Friday the Court declared that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States. Justice Scalia said he is not concerned so much about same-sex marriage, but about "this court's threat to American democracy." Justices Alito and Thomas also dissented.
Chief Justice Roberts:  “Supporters of same-sex marriage have achieved considerable success persuading their fellow citizens — through the democratic process — to adopt their view. That ends today. Five lawyers have closed the debate and enacted their own vision of marriage as a matter of constitutional law.”

Fox News Poll: Carly Fiorina Quietly Finishes in Top 10
Fiorina said at the Faith and Freedom Coalition´s Road to Majority conference that “people of sincere faith make better leaders,” because “faith gives us humility,” “empathy” and “optimism.” “The highest calling of leadership is to unlock potential in others, and now we need a leader who will unlock the potential of this great nation, and let us acknowledge, ladies and gentlemen, that people of sincere faith make better leaders, because our faith gives us humility.”
Just weeks away from possibly joining the 2016 race, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker thrilled a crowd of social conservatives Saturday night with a withering attack on President Obama’s record while putting his potential GOP rivals on notice that he plans to run on his record as a get-it-done governor.

Meanwhile, Socialist Bernie Sanders is gaining on Hillary Clinton in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Everyone complains about taxes. But millions of American households apparently are doing something about it: Picking up and moving.  A CNBC analysis of tax data and figures provided by two major national moving companies shows that states with the highest per-capita taxes, for the most part, are also seeing the biggest net migration out of those states.

Conservatives are better dieters than liberals.  A study finds that “people who identify as conservative perform better on tests of self-control than those who identify as liberal regardless of race, socioeconomic status and gender.”

President Obama couldn’t resist exploiting the deaths in Charleston to advance the gun control agenda, and he has a lot of company in the Democratic Party, which is desperate to energize its voters as the 2016 election looms with a very unappealing presumptive nominee at the top of the ticket.

Hillary Clinton says, “Success isn’t measured by how much the wealthiest Americans have, but by how many children climb out of poverty.” So why did she charge a $200,000 speaking fee to a charity that helps poor kids?

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
6/26  Leah Barkoukis

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal slammed the Supreme Court on Friday after its ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage.

“The Supreme Court is completely out of control, making laws on their own, and has become a public opinion poll instead of a judicial body,” the 2016 presidential candidate said in a statement.

“If we want to save some money, let’s just get rid of the court,” Jindal added.

The 5-4 ruling, which forces all states to recognize same-sex marriage under the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, will fundamentally transform the institution of marriage, he later said.

“Marriage between a man and a woman was established by God, and no earthly court can alter that,” he added.
Jindal also echoed Franklin Graham warning today that the persecution of Christians is coming with this ruling.
“Hillary Clinton and the Left will now mount an all-out assault on religious freedom guaranteed in the First Amendment,” he said.

“Regardless of your views on marriage, all freedom-loving people must pledge to respect our first amendment rights,” he added.

Chief Justice John Roberts was particularly concerned with the religious freedom aspect of the ruling as well.
“Many good and decent people oppose same-sex marriage as a tenet of faith,” he wrote in his dissenting opinion, “and their freedom to exercise religion is—unlike the right imagined by the majority—actually spelled out in the Constitution.”

Christians “better be ready,” Graham warned.

GLOBALONEY
What has a Papal Encyclical calling on the world to end its use of fossil fuels and to pray to God for the success of the global “climate summit” in December got in common with the Greek euro crisis, the ominous rift between the West and Russia, and the shambles Europe is making over the desperation of African and Syrian refugees to find safety this side of the Mediterranean? They are all different aspects of the two greatest acts of political make-believe of our time.

LEFTIST WATCH
FBI files obtained by Judicial Watch reveal that the dad, maternal grandpa and father-in-law of President Obama’s trusted senior advisor, Valerie Jarrett, were “hardcore Communists” under investigation by the U.S. government.

Farrakhan: “I Don’t Get the Debate Over Confederate Flag, ‘We Need to Put the American Flag Down’”

Administrators of the University of California system think referring to America as a ‘melting pot’ is somehow offensive—and want teachers to stop using that and many other innocuous phrases.  Fifty years after the birth of the free speech movement at the University of California, Berkeley, officials across the UC system are encouraging faculty and students to purge mundane, potentially offensive words and phrases from their vocabularies. Administrators want members of campus to avoid the use of racist and sexist statements, though their notions about what kinds of statements qualify are completely bonkers. “America is a melting pot “……”I believe the most qualified person should get the job,” are all phrases that should raise red flags, according to the UC speech police. Saying, “There is only one race, the human race,” is offensive because it denies “the significance of a person of color’s racial/ethnic experience and history.”  “America is the land of opportunity,” implies that “People of color are lazy and/or incompetent and need to work harder.”

“Only Difference Between Dylann Roof and Bill Ayers Is Legitimacy Among the Left”

There’s nothing like a big-money fundraiser for House Democrats to bring President Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi closer together. Mr. Obama and Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, made a show of mending fences Friday night at a fundraiser at the home of billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer overlooking the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco.

SECOND AMENDMENT
Obama's New Standard for Owning Guns:  you don’t get to buy one if you’re “angry about something.”

Evaluating the Left´s Madness on Gun Control

Guns don’t kill people, the Constitution kills people, at least according to Karl Rove, Republican strategist and architect of George W. Bush’s election and reelection as president. Rove embraced the liberal mantra that there are too many guns on the street and went a step further and a step too far, saying the way to avoid more tragedies is to repeal the Second Amendment.

It’s hard to imagine how the massacre at the Emanuel AME Church that left nine dead could have been worse, but a top Democratic strategist says the shooting would have been a “horror” if the black parishioners were armed.

After Dylann Roof, a troubled 21-year-old kid on anti-psychotic drugs, opened fire on people in a Charleston, SC church, President Obama asserted that “this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries.” Three days later, a 26-year-old Austrian man ploughed his car into crowds of people. He then got out of his car and began stabbing them with a knife. He killed at least 3 and injured 30.

The Pope steps in it again.  “Pope Francis is rapidly convincing me that he is not just a leftist, but a dope. Speaking to a group of young people in Turin, he departed from his script and launched into a rambling denunciation of, among others, arms manufacturers.”

ARTICLES
The government's job is simple: to protect freedom and promote free markets. And the Republican Party — which currently controls both chambers of the U.S. Congress — bills itself as the party of individual responsibility and economic growth. Furthermore, in 2011 and again in 2015, the GOP obtained its legislative power because the American people were fed up with the Obama administration's overreach. Unfortunately, upon arriving in Washington, far too many Republicans have decided to follow the path of accommodation and appeasement rather than standing on principle — and standing for the people who put them in office. This "go along to get along" mentality — championed by far too many GOP leaders — has empowered Obama's liberal, rogue bureaucracies on multiple fronts. One of these is the "great Internet giveaway" — Obama's effort to surrender effective control of the World Wide Web to a group of multinational corporate interests and nonprofits (or if that fails, a United Nations bureaucracy).
