op ed review 7/20

THIS WEEK’S NEWS
“Barack Obama strutted to the podium for a stump speech in Delaware Thursday, just after Russian surrogates, shot down a Malaysian airliner with a reported 23 Americans on board.  Obama began his remarks with just 38 seconds discussing the plane. “[I]t looks like it may be a terrible tragedy,” he said. “May be”? He then noted his national security team would stay on it, and quickly returned to his regular programming – beginning with jokes about Joe Biden.
“By contrast, when the Soviets shot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007, Ronald Reagan, who was on vacation in California at the time, immediately canceled all events to return to the White House. When Reagan addressed the nation about the shoot-down, there was no equivocation. He called it “a massacre,” a “crime against humanity,” an “act of barbarism.” Obama, on the other hand, went on joking about Joe Biden and slamming Republicans.”

While the world attempted to figure out why a Malaysian Airlines passenger plane carrying 295 human beings went down over a war zone in Ukraine, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki took to Twitter to discuss "Being informed and fashionable is natural for women”

Four-star Gen. James Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, delivered a stinging rebuke of the Obama administration’s handling of Iraq….”It is rare for an active-duty serviceman to give such blunt public criticism of a sitting president.”

Most of those invading America’s southern border are not what we normally call “children.” These are not toddlers or grade-schoolers who miraculously traveled more than 1,600 miles. These are persons of working age who are ready to displace Americans who want jobs.

As thousands of illegal immigrant “children” are crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, House Democrats pushed for more amnesty, guest-worker visas, $3.7 billion in funding, and more lawyers for illegal immigrant children during a Tuesday Twitter town hall on immigration.  Their message:  “We can't just build a wall or a fence…..This is America. Our doors are open.”
Gallup poll :  Immigration now virtually ties "dissatisfaction with government," at 16%, as the primary issue Americans think of when asked to name the country's top problem.
Most Voters Want to Send Latest Illegal Immigrants Home ASAP

Of more than 57,000 “children” who have arrived at the border since October, only 1,254 had been sent home. Thousands more are on the way. Just last week, Mexico and its southern neighbor, Guatemala, agreed at a meeting of presidents in Mexico to make it easier for Central Americans to transit through Mexico en route to the U.S. and its collapsing border.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/jul/15/editorial-border-crisis-worsens/#ixzz37djJdX6O “….the belief among the illegal immigrants that they would receive permisos and be allowed to stay was the driving factor in their choices to come to the United States and that the crisis will continue until 'misperceptions' about U.S. immigration benefits were no longer prevalent . The report also states that the migrants cited Univision and other outlets as having shaped their views on U.S. immigration policy. Another implication of the report is that family members already in the U.S. are encouraging the minors to come and organizing the travel with smugglers.
The White House won’t reveal where it is housing thousands of Central American juvenile migrants because their “privacy rights” trump Americans’ right to know what‘s happening in their neighborhoods, press secretary Josh Earnest declared July 16.

Hillary Clinton thanked the Republican establishment and its big business allies for taking on the Tea Party and defeating conservative candidates like Chris McDaniel in Mississippi´s June runoff. The Chamber of Commerce, which has vowed to spend at least $50 million against Tea Party candidates and those who oppose amnesty legislation, and Karl Rove's American Crossroads, have also emphasized their desire to defeat conservative candidates, much to Clinton's delight.

Right out of the democrat playbook:  Former Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) said as a governor he had to deal with "all this right-wing fear mongering" about "everything from diseases to terrorism" on illegal immigration. Richardson accused "the Tea Party and some of the strongest elements out there that don´t want to see comprehensive immigration reform, period" of being "nativists" that want to keep "America pure."

Add another Senate race to the tossup list: Colorado. A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Sen. Mark Udall, a Democrat, trailing Rep. Cory Gardner, a Republican, by 2 percentage points, 44-42 percent. By a 49-40 margin, voters say Udall does not deserve to be re-elected. Colorado has come into play only recently. President Barack Obama carried the state in 2012 by 5 percentage points, but the new survey showed state voters today disapprove of of the job he’s doing by a 58-39 percent margin.

Tensions between Girl Scouts’ messaging and Catholic teaching have led to a national boycott of Girl Scout cookies, the ousting of Girl Scouts from parishes, and a significant drop in Catholic membership in the Girl Scouts.

Washington Democrat Estakio Beltran shoots a stuffed elephant in his video ad. He makes it clear that he is symbolically shooting Republicans. He is running for the 4th-district seat in Congress being vacated by Doc. Hastings - central Washington. The ad may have been intended as humorous, but some conservative websites are questioning the message, arguing Democrats would flip out if a GOP candidate blasted away at a symbol of the Democratic Party.

Only about 2% of the U.S. population identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, the Centers for Disease Control reported in the first large-scale government survey measuring Americans’ sexual orientation.

The Obama administration has awarded a $50 million contract to a charitable group to buy a Texas resort hotel and transform it in to a 600 bed facility for juvenile illegal aliens. “The beautiful Palm Aire resort and hotel has an indoor Olympic sized pool, an outdoor pool, saunas and tennis courts.  Free Wi-Fi and cable TV are included in the simply decorated guest rooms.”
Whoops!  After embarrassing  publicity, the contract was cancelled.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Thomas Sowell  7/14

Whenever Democrats are in real trouble politically, the Republicans seem to come up with something new that distracts the public's attention from the Democrats' problems. Who says Republicans are not compassionate?
With public opinion polls showing President Obama's sinking approval rate, in the wake of his administration's multiple fiascoes and scandals — the disgraceful treatment of veterans who need medical care, the Internal Revenue Service coverups, the tens of thousands of children flooding across our open border — Republicans have created two new distractions that may yet draw attention away from the Democrats' troubles.

From the Republican establishment, Speaker of the House John Boehner has announced plans to sue Barack Obama for exceeding his authority. And from the Tea Party wing of the Republicans, former Governor Sarah Palin has called for impeachment of the president.

Does President Obama deserve to be sued or impeached? Yes! Is there a snowball's chance in hell that either the lawsuit or an impeachment will succeed? No!

Barack Obama's repeated disregard of the laws that he is supposed to follow, and his blatantly changing these laws passed by Congress, are a threat to the whole Constitutional form of government, on which all our freedoms depend. Once a president — any president — can create his own laws unilaterally, we are on our way to becoming a banana republic, where arbitrary rule from the top replaces representative government by "we the people."

Why not sue Barack Obama then, or impeach him? For the simplest of all reasons: Neither of these actions is going to do anything to stop Obama, or even discredit him — and both can create a distraction that draws attention away from the Democrats' disasters during an election year. Either the lawsuit or an impeachment — or both — can hurt the Republicans, by making it look like they are playing Mickey Mouse politics during an election year. President Obama is already making a joke out of Speaker Boehner's threatened lawsuit by saying, "So sue me!"

Courts don't like to get involved in cases where one branch of government is suing another — and the Supreme Court does not have to take any case that it does not want to take. Even a lower court can throw out Boehner's lawsuit as a political issue that does not belong in court. Then it will be the Republicans who will have egg on their faces. As for impeachment, the House of Representatives can impeach any president they want to. But an impeachment is essentially just an indictment that leaves it up to the Senate to decide whether to vote to remove the president from office.

So long as the Democrats control the Senate, impeachment of Barack Obama is guaranteed to lose. And this too would leave the Republicans with egg on their faces during an election year.

The political fate of the Republican Party is not something that those of us who are not Republicans need to worry about. If they want to shoot themselves in the foot again, so be it. But all Americans have to worry — and worry big time — about the fate of this country if Republicans blow their chances of taking control of the Senate. If Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid continues his iron control, President Obama can nominate whatever kinds of federal judges he wants to, knowing that they will be confirmed by the Senate. Since federal judges have lifetime tenure, this would in effect extend the Obama administration long past the point when Barack Obama leaves the White House. All he needs to do is pack the federal courts with judges who share his contempt for the Constitution and his zeal to impose a far-left agenda at all costs.

This year's elections — especially the Senate elections — can decide the fate of this country for a long time to come. That is why Republicans' launching of foredoomed symbolic actions like lawsuits and impeachment is such an irresponsible self-indulgence. When the country is at a historic crossroads is not the time for futile gestures like this, which can create bigger disasters than we already have.

David Limbaugh:  “I don´t think Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against President Obama right now, but I also don´t think that considering the idea is "crazy talk." The man has, in my view and that of many others, committed multitudinous impeachable offenses, and we need to strenuously object and bring it to the public´s attention every chance we get. The idea of turning our heads and looking the other way is repugnant. …”

FROM OTHER COLUMNS
“Israel accepts an Egyptian-proposed Gaza cease-fire; Hamas keeps firing. Hamas deliberately aims rockets at civilians; Israel painstakingly tries to avoid them, actually telephoning civilians in the area and dropping warning charges, so-called roof knocking. “Here’s the difference between us,” explains the Israeli prime minister. “We’re using missile defense to protect our civilians, and they’re using their civilians to protect their missiles.” Rarely does international politics present a moment of such moral clarity. Yet we routinely hear this Israel-Gaza fighting described as a morally equivalent “cycle of violence.” This is absurd.”

BOOKS, FILM
Dinesh D’Souza’s latest film, “America, Imagine a World Without Her,” which earned a rare A+ rating from CinemaScore, is apparently such a threat to progressive ideology that Costco initially ordered the book on which the movie is based removed from its shelves. One can understand why: the film is a devastating takedown of those who see America as the primary source of evil in the world.

The government’s spending programs are keeping the people who receive the help “addicted” to aid, said Wayne Allyn Root, author of the new book, “The Murder of the Middle Class.” The problem not only exists with the U.S. government but in states such as California, where heavy government regulation and spending raise the costs of goods and services, said Root, who was the 2008 Libertarian Party vice-presidential nominee. President Obama and many other lawmakers today continue to advocate policies that increase the dependency of people on the government.

VDH: The summer of 2014 will go down in history as the season when America fell apart. Let’s take a tour of the disasters…….

“Rather than deport the illegals, Mr. Obama has ordered them spread around the country, often with neither the knowledge nor consent of state and local officials. Gov. Dave Heineman of Nebraska said Tuesday he learned after the fact that 200 unaccompanied illegal-alien children were placed in his state. “Why are they conducting a secret operation, essentially, transporting them all over the country,” an indignant Mr. Heineman told Fox News on Tuesday. ” … and the federal government won’t tell us what’s going on.”
It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. Obama in his own different way is heading towards Nixon-like levels of weirdness, as, beaten down by the failures regarding his ventures, he appears to have quit his own job. A.B. Stoddard of the Hill says in effect he has stopped being president and chooses to live in a world of his own, shutting out the problems that have become overwhelming, giving dinners where he talks about NBA ratings and where he will live when he leaves. As for Hillary Clinton, she took a long step toward becoming toxic when tapes emerged of a years-old conversation in which she boasted of getting a man who raped a 12-year -old child off with a slap on the wrist. In doing so, she painted the girl as unstable, and given to making things up. Ruth Marcus says, she was "doing her job," but did she have to so much like doing it? Karen Tumulty called her tone "swaggering." Susan Page and Andrea Mitchell agreed.
