op ed review 8/3

THIS WEEK’S NEWS
Two inspectors general have asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into whether sensitive government information was mishandled in connection with the personal email account Hillary Clinton used as secretary of state.
A reported two-month gap in emails from Hillary Clinton´s private account during 2012 coincides with a period of escalating violence in Libya and the obtaining of a special exemption by her top aide, Huma Abedin, to work for both the State Department and the Clinton Foundation.

Some 2.5 million illegal immigrants have flowed into the United States under President Obama, with 790,000 rushing in since 2013, according to a new analysis.
Repopulating swing states:  Exodus from Puerto Rico could upend Florida vote in 2016 presidential race.
Mass immigration turning Virginia blue.
More than half of the new driver’s licenses issued in California during 2015 have gone to illegal immigrants.
About one-fifth of the total population of El Salvador has moved to the US.

The economic expansion—already the worst on record since World War II—is weaker than previously thought, according to newly revised data.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is threatening to run primary challenges against incumbent conservative members of the House of Representatives. “The Chamber has had it with conservatives mucking up their agenda on issues like immigration, Export-Import Bank reauthorization, and highway spending. The group is ready to start picking off troublemakers.”
Tea party champion Rep. Mark Meadows filed a motion to oust House Speaker John A. Boehner from his leadership post, escalating the feud between a faction of conservative lawmakers and the Republican leadership.

Last November, Terrence Bean was taken into custody in Portland, Oregon following an indictment by a jury that charged him with multiple sex crimes against minors. Now additional child sexual abuse charges have been made against him. Why isn´t the media covering this? Because he´s a prominent gay leader and a big donor to President Obama and even flew on Air Force One with him.

President Obama’s five-day trip to Africa cost taxpayers more than $5 million in flight time alone for Air Force One.

The nuclear deal with Iran will have worse consequences than the failed agreement with North Korea, warned a Saudi Prince and former ambassador to the U.S.

Hollywood director Peter Berg used a military-themed meme to blast ESPN’s decision to give Caitlyn Jenner its Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Mr. Berg, who directed “Lone Survivor,” shared an image of a double amputee next to the Olympic athlete formerly known as Bruce Jenner. “One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs. Guess which man made the cover of Vanity Fair, was praised for his courage by President Obama and is to be honored with the ‘Arthur Ashe Courage Award’ by ESPN?”

A key part of President Obama’s legacy will be the fed’s unprecedented collection of sensitive data on Americans by race. The government is prying into our most personal information at the most local levels, all for the purpose of “racial and economic justice.” Unbeknown to most Americans, Obama’s racial bean counters are furiously mining data on their health, home loans, credit cards, places of work, neighborhoods, even how their kids are disciplined in school — all to document “inequalities” between minorities and whites.

The Obama administration threatened to veto a House bill that would strip federal money from "sanctuary cities." The bill is a response to the shooting death in San Francisco of Kate Steinle by an illegal immigrant who had been deported several times.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Erick Erickson  7/3/15
In the 1400s, a nun in a French convent started making sounds like a cat. Other nuns began to do the same. Eventually, they started biting one another. As word of the bitings spread, so, too, did the bitings. They swept through other convents all the way to Rome.

In July of 1518, people in Strasbourg, then part of the Holy Roman Empire, began dancing. It started with Frau Troffea. Others began to join in, and soon there were 400 dancers. Some died as a result of the nonstop dancing that went on for a month. They could not stop.

In 1692, colonists in New England began having fits. Demonic possession was a suggestion. The epileptic-like fits led to the Salem witch trials. In 2008 in Tanzania, female students started fainting for no reason. In 2011, students in Le Roy, N.Y., developed Tourette's-like symptoms that went unexplained.

History is riddled with episodes of mass hysteria. Sometimes those episodes of mass hysteria lead to evil. Sometimes they lead to merely bizarre stories. But society, on occasion, has fits of hysteria and insanity burning like wildfire through it. The wildfire eventually burns out, but it often leaves destruction in its wake.

The United States of America and much of the West are currently in a fit of hysteria. A wildfire is burning through it. Up is down. Down is up. Good is evil. Evil is good. Wrong is right, and right is wrong. Boys can suddenly be girls. Sex and gender are suddenly different things. And Justice Anthony Kennedy believes that because someone may look at the horizon and find loneliness, the Constitution guarantees him the right to marry another man.

Leave aside the fact that any judge who can redefine a multi-thousand-year-old institution on a whim has more power than our Founders would want. Our society is going through a round of hysteria. For many in the country, they feel compelled to board up the windows, batten down the hatches and wait for this latest round of collective hysteria to run its course. Wildfires always run out of fuel. Nature or God, whichever your preference, sorts these things out.

Along the way, society is forgetting why we are organized as we are. G.K. Chesterton wrote of the "democracy of the dead." He wrote, "Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about. All democrats object to men being disqualified by the accident of birth; tradition objects to their being disqualified by the accident of death. Democracy tells us not to neglect a good man's opinion, even if he is our groom; tradition asks us not to neglect a good man's opinion, even if he is our father."

Marriage arrived at what it has been through either divine fiat or trial and error. In the same way, our ancestors structured society to have people rely on themselves, each other, their local churches and their local governments for help. Now, the same madness sweeping through on marriage demands we get right to polyamory and scrap tax breaks for religious nonprofits. It is not a war on marriage, but a war on a way of life itself. If one dares bring fact into the mix, they are shouted down, boycotted and driven from the town square.

There is also a relentless desire to make those who recognize the madness think they are alone. Voices of dissent must be silenced. You must think you are all alone so that you might decide to go along to get along. The media elite are in cahoots with the censors, having picked a side now declared a "fundamental right," and you are not to know others disagree with elite consensus. But you are not alone. Wildfires eventually burn out. The question for you is not whether you take a break from it all and step back to protect your family. The question for you is whether, after you do step back, you prepare yourself to step forward into the rubble, smoke and char to help rebuild civilization once the fire burns itself out.

FROM OTHER COLUMNS
“The left is OK denying Africans corn bred to survive drought. Better the Africans die than eat (genetically modified) corn. For that matter, the left would also prefer Africans die of malaria than spray DDT. It is better that a thousand Africans die of malaria than to risk one bird dying due to DDT, according to the prevailing zeitgeist of the American left…..With animals, too, the left wants no fur touched to benefit science or mankind. ……The American left that would starve Africans, see them die of malaria and see science stagnate because of animal-testing concerns does have an alternative: babies. That would be human babies. If you want to experiment with body parts from human children, "progressive" Americans are perfectly fine with that.

BOOKS, FILM
Coming soon to a theater near you: the movie Hillary Clinton wishes didn’t exist. The trailer has just dropped for Michael Bay’s “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” based on the book by Mitchell Zuckoff, which in turn is based on the eyewitness reports of five of the six CIA contractors present that night.

Once again Mark Levin, the constitutional scholar and radio talk show host, has written an important book that should be in the library of every thoughtful conservative. But this book is different, in that thoughtful conservatives should buy multiple copies and bestow the extras on younger people they care about. For in its essence, this book is a call to arms for the generation that will inherit the wreckage being created by what Levin calls the “ruling generation” – the holders of political power and those who sustain them in office. The younger age cohorts are the people whose future has been “plundered” (Levin’s choice of title is apt) by the policies advanced by progressives and acquiesced to by establishment Republicans.

In my current book, Takedown: From Communists to Progressives, How the Left Has Sabotaged Family and Marriage, I write of the phenomenon of Communist Party marriages. “Theirs was the first ‘party marriage’ that I observed,” wrote Whittaker Chambers in Witness, describing the decidedly non-sacramental marriage of two of his Communist Party comrades, before writing of his own “party marriages.”…In many ways, it has come to full fruition only now in a culture that gleefully redefines marriage and gives us the likes of Barack Obama and Valerie Jarrett in the White House, a damaging political marriage if there ever was one.

GLOBALONEY
The measured US temperature data from USHCN shows that the US is on a long-term cooling trend. But the reported temperatures from NOAA show a strong warming trend. They accomplish this through a spectacular hockey stick of data tampering, which corrupts the US temperature trend by almost two degrees. The biggest component of this fraud is making up data. Almost half of all reported US temperature data is now fake. They fill in missing rural data with urban data to create the appearance of non-existent US warming.

LEFTIST WATCH
The media is joining in the outrage over Donald Trump´s comments about John McCain. Until fairly recently, comments about McCain not being a hero were most likely to come from liberals…..Here are a few sample titles from progressive outposts like DailyKos and Democratic Underground. - John McCain Is NOT a ´War Hero´ - John McCain American Hero? - It´s Time To Stop Pretending John McCain Is A "Hero" - They recite most of the same talking points that were part of the Obama whispering campaign against him back in '08.

The idea that totalitarian economies are more efficient than capitalist democracies keeps popping up among progressive writers. That’s because of the progressive dream in which, as Hillary Clinton famously put it in 1993, “[w]e must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society.” That sounds a lot like Karl Marx’s “Society does not consist of individuals but expresses the sum of interrelations, the relations within which these individuals stand” (Grundrisse, Notebook II, Section B, 1857). Lest anyone think Hillary has changed her mind since 1993, it’s now clear that she is competing with Bernie Sanders

Venezuela used to have oil literally coming out of the ground. Then the Socialists took over and under Hugo Chavez made it a model for the world... to run away from. Here´s what´s going on in Venezuela now. Universal Health Care - Venezuela´s widely praised government health care system is doing great. Doctors are being paid $15 a month In some hospitals, they had less than a third of the medical supplies they require. Almost every patient told me they had to buy at least some of their drugs on the street.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD VIDEOS
Holly O’Donnell, a licensed phlebotomist, said she “unsuspectingly took as job as a ‘procurement technician'” at the fetal tissue company StemExpress, which was allegedly the primary buyer of fetal body parts from Planned Parenthood. She said she fainted on her first day on the job when she was asked to dissect a “freshly aborted” baby. Concerning Planned Parenthood’s repeated denials that they make any money from the exchange of body parts for cash, something that would be illegal under federal law, O’Donnell said, “For whatever we could procure, they would get a certain percentage. The main nurse was always trying to make sure we got our specimens. No one else really cared, but the main nurse did because she knew that Planned Parenthood was getting compensated.”
Cash-4-Cadavers: What´s So Shocking about Selling Baby Parts? When it comes to ghoulish zeal, Dr. Hannibal Lecter has nothing on Planned Parenthood’s Dr. Deborah Nucatola.
Records reveal that Nucatola was employed by a former White House staffer at the time that she was selling aborted baby fetus parts. A staunch political advocate, Nucatola railed against the “right-wing” Bush administration.

Palin:  “The elites are shocked by Trump’s dominance, but everyday Americans aren’t. Everywhere I’ve gone this summer, including motorsport events in Detroit full of fed up Joe Six-Pack Americans, the folks I meet commiserate about wussified slates of politicians, but then unsolicited, they whisper their appreciation for Trump because he has the guts to say it like it is. Trump’s unconventional candidacy is a shot in the arm for ordinary Americans fed up with the predictable poll tested blather of squishy milquetoast career politicians who campaign one way and govern another. But it’s not just how Trump says it, it’s what he’s saying. Trump has tapped into America’s great populist tradition by speaking to concerns of working class voters.

Krauthammer:  When you write a column, as did I two weeks ago, headlined “The worst agreement in U.S. diplomatic history,” you don’t expect to revisit the issue. We had hit bottom. Or so I thought. Then on Tuesday the final terms of the Iranian nuclear deal were published. I was wrong. Who would have imagined we would be giving up the conventional arms and ballistic missile embargoes on Iran? In nuclear negotiations?
