op ed review 10/31

"Either this is just the end of a big election that rolls back a few important mistakes, but basically changes little besides who gets the good parking spaces and whose staffers get to cash in for a few years. Or this is the beginning a great reformation that will take America back for liberty. It's up to the people. We are so close. In 50 years in politics, I have never seen as large a percentage of the public self-motivated for reformation. For those of us who believe we are a providential country, now is the chance for the public to demonstrate it."

-Tony Blankley, former Reagan speechwriter

THIS WEEK’S NEWS

The Hill 2010 Midterm Election poll, surveying nearly 17,000 likely voters in 42 toss-up districts over four weeks, points to a massive Republican wave that, barring an extraordinary turnaround, will deliver crushing nationwide defeats for President Obama’s party.

A Rasmussen survey found 65 percent of likely voters would prefer to fire every member of Congress and start from scratch. 82 percent of Republicans and 78 percent of independents told the pollsters they wanted to give everyone on Capitol Hill the heave-ho.

The National Football League’s PAC is contributing heavily to incumbent democrats - $10,000 to Harry Reid, $5,000 to Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas; $5,000 to Russ Feingold of Wisconsin; $5,000 to Barbara Boxer of California; and $5,000 to Patty Murray of Washington. In none of these races did the NFL’s PAC contribute to the Republican challenger. Of the $341,000 the NFL’s PAC has contributed to congressional candidates in this election cycle, $340,000 has gone to incumbents.

Why the US Is Turning to the Right

A Conservative friend wise about human nature and politics summarizes his views this way: "Liberals don't think they have any politics. They think they are in a state of nature. Only those who disagree with them are unnatural." It's a brilliant insight, and tells you all you need to know about the culture and political wars in America today. Less than two years after the arc of history seemed to favor them, the high priests of liberal orthodoxy are on the run. They have overreached, and now they must pay.

But they are not going quietly or with decency. They are desperate and dangerous, astonishingly reckless in their attacks on the majority of Americans who commit the secular sin of disagreement. Faced with massive public resistance to their demands for conformity, President Obama and his religious-like acolytes have given up trying to persuade skeptics. They are reduced to trying to crush dissent. To them, resistance is heresy, and must be eliminated.

They are not embarrassed by the obvious double standards they are embracing or the false claims they are peddling. They are, as my friend observed, incapable of recognizing as legitimate any view but their own, so the end justifies the means.

Obama's scurrilous conduct is Exhibit A of the panic on the left. Discarding the sunny-side-up mask, he crisscrosses the country in fear-monger mode. His base appeals to women, blacks, Latinos and students are identity-group politics at its worst. He is not alone in having a worldview that depends on absolute conformity. Deviation is also dangerous to the institutions that form the backbone of the liberal establishment he leads.

The Juan Williams case says it all. Claims by the goon squad at NPR that he was fired for "expressing a personal opinion on a divisive issue" are transparent hogwash. He and other NPR analysts and correspondents routinely express opinions that favor Democrats. He was fired because he expressed an inconvenient opinion -- that he and many Americans often associate Muslims with terrorists. And he did it on Fox News, the antichrist to the church of the left.

His fears are widely shared but don't fit with NPR's authorized view of the world. So it -- he -- must be silenced. In firing him, NPR instantly created another example of why the country is turning right. Tens of millions of ordinary people have been roused to fight for rights they assumed they had. From health-care mandates to rising federal debt to confiscatory taxes to suffocating speech codes, they have correctly concluded their liberty is under assault.

To be sure, dissenters do not have a monopoly on wisdom or common sense. A partisan label is never a guarantee of righteousness, as the reversal of political fortunes in two years demonstrates. Rather, the American system, we learn again, is intolerant of only one thing: intolerance. Whether its hammer comes from left or right, it always wakes the spirit of revolution. Freedom of speech, to dissent, to oppose, to fight back, is not just the literal content of the First Amendment. It is the essence of who we are as a people.

Obama, of course, infamously discounted American Exceptionalism when he was asked about it, suggesting he does not view our national character as unique. His mistake. Still, we should be grateful. Just as Obama's election was the result of George W. Bush's failures, the awakening of the American majority wouldn't have happened without Obama's overreach. Because he did, the right to say no -- hell, no! -- will soon be secured anew. Hold on for nine more days.

Another good read from former Reagan speechwriter, Peggy Noonan “Two central facts give shape to the historic 2010 election. The first is not understood by Republicans, and the second not admitted by Democrats. The first: the tea party is not a "threat" to the Republican Party, the tea party saved the Republican Party. In a broad sense, the tea party rescued it from being the fat, unhappy, querulous creature it had become, a party that didn't remember anymore why it existed, or what its historical purpose was. The tea party, with its energy and earnestness, restored the GOP to itself..... The second fact of 2010 is understood by Republicans but not admitted by Democrats….This election is about one man, Barack Obama, who fairly or not represents the following: the status quo, Washington, leftism, Nancy Pelosi, Fannie and Freddie, and deficits in trillions, not billions. Everyone who votes is going to be pretty much voting yay or nay on all of that. And nothing can change that story line now.

FROM OTHER COLUMNS

“Opening a whole new branch of cognitive science -- liberal psychology -- Obama has discovered a new principle: The fearful brain is hard-wired to act befuddled, i.e., vote Republican. But of course. Here Obama has spent two years bestowing upon the peasantry the 'New Foundation' of a more regulated, socially engineered and therefore more humane society, and they repay him with recalcitrance and outright opposition. Here he gave them Obamacare, the stimulus, financial regulation and a shot at cap-and-trade -- and the electorate remains not just unmoved but ungrateful. Faced with this truly puzzling conundrum, Dr. Obama diagnoses a heretofore undiscovered psychological derangement: anxiety-induced Obama Underappreciation Syndrome, wherein an entire population is so addled by its economic anxieties as to be neurologically incapable of appreciating the 'facts and science' undergirding Obamacare and the other blessings their president has bestowed upon them from on high."

-Charles Krauthammer

"Fundamentally, there is a permanent war of attrition between liberty and the federal regulatory bureaucrats. A war of attrition is a resource war…... Although I don't believe it has ever been tried, a new Congress could try to use its power of the purse to begin to 'atrit' the regulators. That is to suggest Congress should order permanent, immediate and massive staff reductions among the regulators. Defund and de-authorize (say 50 percent) of the regulatory staff positions.

-Tony Blankley

"NPR should be defunded, not because it's liberal but because it's wrong for the federal government to be in the news business or to subsidize one set of views over another."

Radical-in-Chief: Barack Obama and the Untold Story of American Socialism” by Stanley Kurtz. “When I began my post-campaign research for this book, my inclination was to downplay or dismiss evidence of explicit socialism in Obama’s background. I thought the socialism issue was an unprovable and unnecessary distraction from the broader question of Obama’s ultra-liberal inclinations. I was wrong. Evidence that suggests Obama is a socialist, I am now convinced, is real, important, and profoundly relevant to the present.”

"Beyond a House Divided: The Moral Consensus Ignored by Washington, Wall Street and the Media" by the leader of the Knights of Columbus, Carl Anderson. How recent polling conclusively reveals that the culture wars are being won by those with traditional values. Those of us who believe in God, have successful marriages, oppose abortions in most instances, want less government than more, think the government and media are part of the problem, and are supportive of religion in the public square are not a minority. We're not just a majority either. We are part of the quiet consensus at work in this country — if only those in the media and Washington, D.C., were paying attention. The truth is that Americans are a people guided and sustained by morality and faith, and want those values reflected both in their institutions and political leadership.

Shelby Steele: But Barack Obama is not an "other" so much as he is a child of the 1960s. His coming of age paralleled exactly the unfolding of a new "counterculture" American identity. And this new American identity—and the post-1960s liberalism it spawned—is grounded in a remarkable irony: bad faith in America as virtue itself, bad faith in the classic American identity of constitutional freedom and capitalism as the way to a better America….He is simply the first president we have seen grounded in this counterculture American identity. When he bows to foreign leaders, he is not displaying "otherness" but the counterculture Americanism of honorable self-effacement in which America acknowledges its own capacity for evil as prelude to engagement…..Among today's liberal elite, bad faith in America is a sophistication, a kind of hipness. More importantly, it is the perfect formula for political and governmental power. It rationalizes power in the name of intervening against evil—I will use the government to intervene against the evil tendencies of American life (economic inequality, structural racism and sexism, corporate greed, neglect of the environment and so on), so I need your vote.

WISE WORDS

"We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the Earth. Our government has no power except that granted it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed."

In a New York Times interview last week, President Obama acknowledged that there’s “no such thing as shovel-ready projects.” This was one of his main selling points for the $862 billion stimulus package. He now admits they don’t exist, and the stimulus is clearly not working.

It's official: The Obama administration has now borrowed $3 trillion, according to the U.S. Treasury Department. It took from 1776, when the United States became an independent country, until 1990, the year after the Berlin Wall fell signaling victory in the Cold War, for the federal government to accumulate a total of $3 trillion in debt. It only took from Jan. 20, 2009, the day President Barack Obama was inaugurated, until Oct. 15, 2010, for the Obama administration to add another $3 trillion to the federal debt.

US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle will be extremely busy in Mumbai, upon landing on November 6 for a two day India visit. The Tea Party Express kicks off its final roadshow of 2010, a two week sprint from Reno, Nevada to Concord, New Hampshire through a host of battleground states and congressional districts where Tea Party backed Republicans are looking to knock off Democrats.

Obama’s Department of Justice has suddenly turned on a dime, becoming the great pro-active protector of voters’ rights: Poll watchers in Harris County, Texas — where a Tea Party group launched an aggressive anti-voter fraud effort — were accused of “hovering over” voters, “getting into election workers’ faces” and blocking or disrupting lines of voters who were waiting to cast their ballots as early voting got underway yesterday.

She said too little had been required of immigrants in the past and repeated her usual line that they should learn German in order to get by in school and have opportunities on the labour market.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Michael Costello, Lewiston Morning Tribune 10/16/10

While most of our congressmen and congresswomen are lawyers, there is probably no better preparation for the job than the study of parasitology. At least one author has made the case that parasites are actually at the top of the animal kingdom. He reasoned that, once established on or in a host, the parasite lives a life of leisure while the host becomes little more than the parasite's slave. Whereas politicians present themselves as humble servants of their constituencies, the truth is that their service they give us is barely distinguishable from the service given by a tapeworm.

To be successful, a parasite must have at its disposal all the machinery to grip tightly to its host and to siphon off what it needs. Parasites have grown so successful at living off hosts that they have dispensed with all superfluous tissues required by free living organisms, such as muscles and nerves. The typical parasite has no brains. There is no such thing as a clever, calculating parasite. In fact, once the parasite established itself in its host, the parasite permits its nervous system and musculature to simply atrophy away as it settles into a life of absorbing nutrients from its host. In other words, the life cycle of the parasite closely resembles the political career of Sen. Patty Murray.

It is past time for Washington's immune system to expel Murray from the Senate. Or to put it more broadly, America needs a change from politicians like Murray if there is ever to be any hope for change. In her 18 years in the Senate, Murray has grown to represent the very worst of our ruling class.

Never the sharpest knife in the drawer, Murray was a natural for the occupation of political parasitism. Murray's political career began when her career as community college teacher ended in failure. She took her degree in "leisure studies" and when it became clear that she was not up to teaching a class in "parenting" at a junior college, she attached herself to the United States Treasury and allowed her political operation to operate on autopilot.

During her reign of mediocrity, Murray has assembled a machine that funnels taxpayer dollars, in the form of pork barrel spending, to political supporters who gratefully repay a portion of their take into her political campaign coffers.

Murray's Senate office has served as an internship program for future lobbyists who use their access to Murray to gain big government contracts that enrich themselves and stuff bucks back to Murray. Seventeen former Murray staffers are now K Street lobbyists. And these former staffers have shown their gratitude by making Murray the second largest recipient of lobbyist campaign contributions. Only the execrable Harry Reid, D-Dimlight, rakes in more cash from lobbyists than Murray.

Reid and Murray are both outstanding examples that simple minds, when combined with an unprincipled ambition, can assemble powerful political machines that reward allies and generate enough campaign cash to purchase re-election ad infinitum. Neither of these people is especially bright, as evidenced by their mutual incapacity to speak extemporaneously. Unshielded by their praetorian guard, and off script, both are prone to utter inanities that would embarrass the average 12-year-old. And even when Murray reads from prepared remarks, her speechwriters are careful to omit polysyllabic words and complex sentences that she might stumble over.

It's not easy to fail as a community college teacher. For someone so incompetent in the real world to fail in an almost fail-proof job and then rise to become the fourth ranking Democrat in the United States Senate should tell you all that you need to know about the skill set required to succeed in politics. It only requires a senator who is willing to give her office over to sub-parasites who know how to trade favors for cash without crossing the blurry line into flagrant illegality. The knowledge that a few years of service to the parasite is all the resume enhancement needed to move up into the more enriching job as a lobbyist ensures that even a dimwit will have a steady supply of talented sub-parasites willing to work hard to guarantee their future benefactor's success.

To fight parasites, hosts must possess an immune system that can be "educated" to respond to parasitic invasions. Our immune system is the ballot box. Consider yourself educated.

"The political success of liberalism is parasitic, feeding off order and prosperity that the implementation of liberal policies couldn't possibly create. Bill Clinton's recent bragging on the campaign trail about the budgets that he balanced in the 1990s is an illustration of this: Where did those budgets come from? Not from the policies of liberalism. Take away the significant reductions in defense spending that came from Ronald Reagan winning the Cold War, the wealth from an entrepreneurial economy that an era of tax cuts generated, and the check on Democratic spending schemes from Newt Gingrich's Congress, and those budgets would never have been balanced. In his first term, Clinton had every intention of busting the budget with HillaryCare, but he just couldn't get away it. If Clinton is a 'successful' president, as pundits these days insist, that's because his agenda failed where Obama's succeeded. By passing ObamaCare and a raft of other bad bills, the Democrats have made it possible for voters to measure liberal rhetoric against the grim realities it produces. The parasite got fat enough to eat the conservative host whole, and now it is dying."

"A nirvana 'Star Trek' world without money, without sickness, and without envy ignores reality. Yet not only do the Left pretend this is possible, but they sell the idea by using envy and government checks like candy from their pocket. They sell this idea to those in need, taking power in exchange for promises they cannot possibly keep. They have merely shifted the burden, first to 'the rich,' and then always expanding according to ever-increasing needs to the entire producing half of the country. This is not fairness. This is lust for power. This is the face of tyranny in disguise. This, then, is the liberal Democrat message of Hope and Change."
-Richard Pecore

"ObamaCare is an unmitigated disaster-in-the-making. If people can be forced to buy health insurance and states can be forced to blow gigantic, federally-mandated holes in their budgets, this country will never recover. Our wannabe socialists in Congress and the White House are already, as Margaret Thatcher put it, 'out of other people's money.' The election in November may do much to blunt their odious ambitions, but they will never give up trying to turn America into a socialist nation."
-Arnold Ahlert

"In interviews, job summits and press conferences, it was shovel-ready this, shovel-ready that. Search the White House website for the term 'shovel-ready' and you'll drown in press releases about all the shovels ready to shove shovel-ready projects into the 21st century, where no shovel is left behind. Only now it turns out that the president was shoveling something all right when he was talking about shovel-ready jobs -- a whole pile of steaming something."

"What do you call a Supreme Court that within the last few terms has ruled that carbon dioxide can be regulated as 'air pollution' by the Environmental Protection Agency? That gave captured terrorists and enemy combatants held at Guantanamo Bay the right to petition for release in federal court? That has relied on foreign law when defining provisions of the Constitution? How would you characterize a Supreme Court that said local governments can seize people's property by eminent domain and turn it over to private developers in order to generate more taxes? That declared it unconstitutional to impose the death penalty for murders committed by killers younger than 18? And that barred the death penalty as well for the rape of young children -- a decision that even Barack Obama suggested was too lenient? Well, if you're the dean of the law school at the University of California-Irvine, you call it 'the most conservative court since the mid-1930s.' If you're NPR's Nina Totenberg, you say it's 'dominated by a new brand of conservative justice.' ... If you're The New York Times, you label it 'the Supreme Court that conservatives had long yearned for and that liberals feared.' The Supreme Court can be something of a Rorschach ink blot: What you see when you look at it may reveal more about you than about any objective reality…”"

Kyle-Ann Shriver reviews “Rules for Radical Conservatives “…a remarkable American classic which will help all us conservatives save America. If there were a literary equivalent of the Medal of Honor, this guy would surely get my vote. As a longtime student of Alinsky myself, I was more curious than a lurking feline to see how Walsh answered Alinsky's manual for the left. Rules for Radical Conservatives far outshines Alinsky's drab socialist nihilism and actually not only gives conservative Americans a roadmap for bringing our nation back to Constitutional fidelity,. but also tells us exactly how we got to such a place as this -- where truly limited government is little more than a dim memory.”

Sometimes the bias can't get any clearer: A MSNBC graphic on Monday mocked GOP senatorial candidates with the headline, "American Freak Show: Angle, Paul, O'Donnell: New Faces in Politics."

George Soros is bankrolling a documentary that celebrates left-wing terrorists who plotted to napalm Republicans at the 2008 GOP convention in Minnesota. “During a search of a St. Paul residence, police found gas masks, slingshots, helmets, knee pads and eight Molotov cocktails consisting of bottles filled with gasoline with attached wicks made from tampons….They mixed gasoline with oil so it would stick to clothing and skin and burn longer…”

NPR (National Politically-correct Radio) has terminated the contract of longtime news analyst Juan Williams after remarks he made on the Fox News Channel about Muslims. Here is what Williams said: "Look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

In the past, nobody at NPR got fired for calling Tea Party members “Tea Baggers,” for saying that "the evaporation of 4 million" Christians would leave the world a better place, or for suggesting that God could give former Sen. Jesse Helms or his family AIDS from a blood transfusion.

The firing of Williams, combined with leftwing billionaire George Soros’ recent $1.8 million donation to the organization, have reignited calls to end NPR’s taxpayer subsidies.

The United Arab Emirates’ highest judicial body says a man can beat his wife and young children as long as the beating leaves no physical marks.

A top judicial official tried to allay concerns raised by the ruling. Islamic scholars cite the Quran itself in defending wife-beating – specifically, a sura that instructs Muslim husbands with disobedient wives to admonish them, then to refuse to sleep with them, and finally to beat them.

But the head of the U.N. Population Fund says “stereotyping” is to blame for the perception that Islamic societies are “backward” when it comes to the treatment of women.

A cafe owner in the UK has been ordered to tear out a ventilation fan - because the smell of her frying bacon 'offends' Muslims.

The Koran is a text that encourages Islam to impose itself with force and permits the killing of Christians, said Lebanon's Archbishop of Antioch, addressing a Vatican meeting of Middle East bishops. "The Koran gives Muslims the right to judge Christians and kill them with Jihad," he said. "It gives orders to impose religion with force, with the sword. For this reason, Muslims don't recognize the freedom of religion among themselves or others."

GLOBALONEY
Five centuries ago, a German priest challenged the reigning theological “consensus” about the clerical sale of indulgences, unraveling one of the great religious scams in history and inspiring the Protestant Reformation. This month, a senior American physicist challenged the reigning scientific “consensus” about global warming. His action may prove to be the unraveling one of the great scientific mistakes in history and the beginning of a greatly needed reformation of the scientific community.

Government Motors' all-electric car isn't all-electric and doesn't get near the touted hundreds of miles per gallon. Like "shovel-ready" jobs, maybe there's no such thing as "plug-ready" cars either. The Chevy Volt, hailed by the Obama administration as the electric savior of the auto industry and the planet, makes its debut in showrooms next month, but it's already being rolled out for test drives by journalists. It appears we're all being taken for a ride. Popular Mechanics found the Volt to get about 37.5 mpg in city driving

Carbon shame goes global: Earlier this month, the World Bank announced the creation of the Guyana REDD+ Investment Fund, in which Norway pays Guyana $30 million for "limiting greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation."….In return for its money, Norway receives "ecosystem services." Because the Scandinavian nation is located more than 5,000 miles from Guyana and receives no tangible benefit from this deal, Norwegians presumably can be comforted in the knowledge that their krones are preserving South American forests, thereby granting them absolution of guilt arising from damage they might wreak on their own forests. No carbon shame for them...”

“…..we are seeing a genuine meltdown of both the media and political elite, two groups not happy at all with the new American revolution called the Tea Party. Especially irritating to American Nobility is the fact that women are in front of this storm, leading the way and calling out the political establishment for disdain and punishment on election day. Women control the household accounts and we know when spending is unsustainable, threatening the very fabric of our families, or our country as the case may be. As one Tea Party rally sign aimed at big government succinctly put it, "My kid isn't your ATM." http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2010/oct/19/tea-party-movement-sarahpalin

“An electoral earthquake? Here are warning signs that nothing in recent experience has prepared the experts to assess adequately. First, there is the Tea-Party Movement. It is like nothing that I have witnessed in my lifetime – a spontaneous outpouring provoked by a single remark made by Rick Santelli on CNBC on 19 February 2009. I predict that the Republicans will take between seventy and one hundred seats in the House and that they will take control of the Senate….Moreover, I predict that – if the Republican leadership eschews earmarks, sticks firmly to the principles announced in the Declaration of Independence and embedded in the Constitution, and insists on a repeal of Obamacare, on there being no new taxes, and on serious budget cuts – there will be additional good news for them in 2012, especially, in the Senate. This country is in for a rough ride, but it may well emerge stronger than ever.”

Fred Barnes: “The biggest tent ever…..It’s suddenly a big tent party that includes everyone from Tea Party libertarians to gay moderates. They’re in agreement on the economic issues (spending, taxes, deficit, debt, role of government) and health care. Those are the overriding issues in the election. Other issues pale in comparison. Social issues aren’t unimportant—quite the contrary. But they didn’t need to be pushed front and center in the campaign and haven’t been. The best way to achieve a pro-life Congress is simply to elect Republicans…..”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel tossed one of progressivism's most cherished concepts under the bus. "This (multicultural) approach has failed, utterly failed," What is multiculturalism? It is a bankrupt ideology, one based on the fraudulent premise that all cultures are "equally viable" and "equally deserving" of respect. Are they really--or is this another simple case of progressives looking at the world the way they want it to be, instead of the way it really is?
STRATFOR’s George Friedman: "…The statements were striking in their bluntness and their willingness to speak of a dominant German culture, a concept that for obvious reasons Germans have been sensitive about asserting since World War II. To the U.S. Army soldiers and Marines some things seem so obviously true that they are beyond debate. Among those perceived truths: The restrictive rules of engagement that they have to fight under have made serving in combat far more dangerous for them, while allowing the Taliban to return to a position of strength. "If they use rockets to hit the [forward operating base] we can't shoot back because they were within 500 meters of the village. If they shoot at us and drop their weapon in the process we can't shoot back," said a U.S. Army medic in Zabul province. “Word had come down the morning Brooks spoke to this reporter that watch towers surrounding the base were going to be dismantled because Afghan village elders, some sympathetic to the Taliban, complained they were invading their village privacy.”

WISE WORDS
"We hear much of special interest groups. Our concern must be for a special interest group that has been too long neglected. It knows no sectional boundaries or ethnic and racial divisions, and it crosses political party lines. It is made up of men and women who raise our food, patrol our streets, man our mines and our factories, teach our children, keep our homes, and heal us when we are sick -- professionals, industrialists, shopkeepers, clerks, cabbies, and truck drivers. They are, in short, 'We the people,' this breed called Americans. Well, this administration's objective will be a healthy, vigorous, growing economy that provides equal opportunity for all Americans, with no barriers born of bigotry or discrimination. Putting America back to work means putting all Americans back to work. ... All must share in the productive work of this 'new beginning' and all must share in the bounty of a revived economy. With the idealism and fair play which are the core of our system and our strength, we can have a strong and prosperous America at peace with itself and the world."

op ed review 10/17

THIS WEEK’S NEWS
Democrats have canceled all of their ad reservations in at least six districts where their odds of holding the seats appear to be shrinking with three weeks to go until Election Day.

GOP leads Democrats by 17 points among men.

85 percent of Americans are either angry about the economy or at least dissatisfied with it, according to the survey produced for ABC and Yahoo!.

Sharron Angle has raised an eye-popping $14 million between July 1 and Sept. 30 for her challenge to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a stunning number that far eclipses the cash-collection totals of other prominent candidates seeking Senate seats next month.
And she won the debate with Sen. Reid on Wednesday, telling the Democrat to “man up” at one point and questioning how he got wealthy during his years in Congress.

A new Rasmussen poll shows Ms. Angle winning the race by four points, her biggest lead since June. Two other polls from CNN and Fox News also confirm a recent jump in her standing.

In Illinois, Republican state Sen. Bill Brady holds a lead of nine percentage points over Democratic Gov. Quinn in the race for governor, according to a new poll that also finds the Illinois Senate race deadlocked.

The White House intensified its attacks on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for its alleged ties to foreign donors, part of an escalating Democratic effort to link Republicans with corporate and overseas interests. The chamber adamantly denies that foreign funds are used in its U.S. election efforts.  President Obama, speaking at a rally in Philadelphia, said "the American people deserve to know who is trying to sway their elections".
John Hindraker:  “Obama's lies are particularly reprehensible, given that his 2008 Presidential campaign represents the gold standard for accepting contributions illegally from foreign sources, with no disclosure whatsoever….. Every time you think the Democratic Party can't sink any lower, it does.”
Karl Rove:  "Have these people no shame? Does the president of the United States have such little regard for the office that he holds that he goes out there and makes these kind of baseless charges against his political enemies?......This is just beyond the pale. How dare the president do this…"
Charles Krauthammer: “Well, there's desperation and then there's reptilian desperation. And this is the reptilian variety. This thing just oozes of slime…”

For those who’ve forgotten, here’s the 2008 headline:  “Obama Accepting Untraceable Donations”

A federal appeals court reversed course and upheld Washington State’s ban on voting by prison inmates in a case that challenged the ban on the grounds that it had a disproportionate effect on minority voters.

ABC News asks, “In South Dakota: Another Sarah Palin?.......She's a rancher, a mother of three, and a staunch conservative who is running on a platform of slashing federal spending and repealing the new federal health care law. She's also an avid hunter known to hunt elk with a bow and arrow. Her political views and physical appearance have led some to label her "South Dakota's Sarah Palin."

Paul Allen has donated $100,000 to the Defeat 1098 campaign to turn back the Washington State income tax Initiative.

The day after he (or a member of his staff) is caught on tape calling his Republican opponent Meg Whitman a whore, Jerry Brown announced the endorsement of the National Organization of Women (NOW). It's fashionable in feminist circles to sit around bemoaning the fact that few young women want to identify themselves as feminists. Wanna know why?

President Obama is coming to Seattle next week to headline a get-out-the-vote rally for U.S. Sen. Patty Murray.

More than half of the net new jobs in the entire U.S. during the past 12 months were created in Texas.

The U.S. government had another fabulous year—in spending your money. “We didn't expect President Obama to hold a press conference, but why are Republicans so quiet? Spending rolled in for the year that ended September 30 at $3.45 trillion, second only to 2009's $3.52 trillion in the record books.”

States appropriated almost $6.2 billion for four-year colleges and universities between 2003 and 2008 to help pay for the education of students who did not return for year two.  In addition, the federal government spent $1.5 billion and states spent $1.4 billion on grants for students who didn't start their sophomore years,

Even though America is fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, members of President Obama's Cabinet are three times more likely to have attended law school than boot camp. Only two - Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki - among the 16 Cabinet and six Cabinet-rank officials are military veterans.

Congressional staffers are allowed to use information about policies about to be implemented to invest in stocks and make money. At least 72 aides on both sides of the aisle traded shares of companies that their bosses help oversee.

It’s being called by some, Seattle’s war on cars. A series of recent moves by city leaders has critics saying Seattle wants to balance its massive budget deficit on the backs of motorists.

In the final days of her most difficult reelection bid, California Senator Barbara Boxer is emphasizing veterans issues to deflect criticism of her long history of undermining the US military, a cynical strategy that has garnered an endorsement “from the increasingly leftist VFW.”

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Investor’s Business Daily  10/12

The attack on the Chamber follows community organizer Saul Alinsky's dictum to "pick a target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." It follows earlier offensives that began in this vein, first with Obama operatives taking aim at conservative media, including Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. That was followed by attacks on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and the grass-roots Tea Party movement, which seeks smaller government. After that, Koch Industries, whose two owners help fund free-market think tanks such as the Cato Institute, was in Obama's sights, accused of evading taxes — which the White House now says it has no direct knowledge of.

Finally, we have the full frontal assault on the Chamber, representing 300,000 American businesses. None of these entities are actual political opponents, and they aren't even treated as politicians. With the president hurling false charges at major pillars of what is essentially civil society, these targets are treated as enemies. Is this what we've come to? A presidential enemies list, Alinskyite tactics targeting individuals one by one and, in this attack on the Chamber, a propaganda war against the private sector?

It's hard to see how Team Obama can win by harassing the entire domestic private sector, and even harder to see why it should try. Obama's top political problem is joblessness, and it's the Chamber's members that are the job creators. If the president can't find a way of accommodating them, he's in for political trouble. At a bare minimum, Obama can start by ending the war against the Chamber's exercise of free speech and restore his stature as the leader of the free world — instead of acting like some kind of pale imitation of a Latin American dictator……His charges are false and he knows it. If this isn't beneath his office, what is?

One needs to look hard to find any head of a major democracy as openly at war with his country's Chamber of Commerce as Obama is. His charge that the Chamber's $75 million ad campaign ahead of elections is funded by foreign sources is both false and an unprecedented smear, an accusation of a crime. It's deeply disappointing coming from a country's elected leader.

Neither Europe's socialists nor Asia's combative leadership fight their chambers like this. Chambers of commerce, including the U.S. branch, generally seek pragmatic accommodation with those in power. Obama's attack on the Chamber is sadly reminiscent of the scorched-earth relations Venezuela's self-declared communist leader Hugo Chavez has with his country's business groups — and he makes no secret of wanting to destroy them.

Shockingly, a similarly antagonistic situation now exists in the U.S., center of world capitalism.

Based on a blog post from the Center for American Progress, Obama now calls the Chamber's ad campaign in defense of free markets not protected speech but "a threat to democracy." His embattled party still repeats the scurrilous claim that the Chamber's ads are foreign-funded because it receives a small amount of dues from overseas companies. But nearly all of these businesses are based in the U.S., and their dues are separated from ad funds. The White House knows this — or at least, should.

As the media, including the New York Times, gave this a good debunking, Obama refrained from continuing his charges Monday. But his lieutenant, Vice President Joe Biden, "didn't get the memo," as Lucianne Goldberg quipped on her Web site. So Biden continues the dishonest line of attack. "I challenge the Chamber of Commerce to tell us how much of the money they're investing is from foreign sources," Biden said Monday.

"Not a red cent," the Chamber replied, desperate to keep the lies from becoming a "truth" by repetition.

"These accusations by a George Soros-funded anti-business blog are unfounded, deceitful, and completely erroneous," the Chamber wrote on its Web site. "They are a desperate attempt to silence those who support free enterprise, and a diversion by people upset by their grim prospects in the coming election."

This sorry situation says two things about the Obama administration: One, it's willing to use the same Alinskyite tactics against a single target that it used to win elections. And two, it's at war with America's private sector.

Another “must read” this week:  “Harold Lewis is Emeritus Professor of Physics at the UCSB. Here is his letter of resignation to the President of the American Physical Society(APS).   “…..and I am forced, with no pleasure at all, to offer you my resignation from the Society. It is of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists, and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist. Anyone who has the faintest doubt that this is so should force himself to read the ClimateGate documents, which lay it bare…. I don’t believe that any real physicist, nay scientist, can read that stuff without revulsion. I would almost make that revulsion a definition of the word scientist.”

BOOKS, FILM
“The Ruling Class: How They Corrupted America and What We Can Do About It”  by Angelo Codevilla.  “….introduces readers to the Ruling Class, the group of bipartisan political elites who run America. This Ruling Class, educated at prestigious universities and convinced of its own superiority, has everything to gain by raising taxes and expanding the reach of government. This class maintains that it knows what is best and continually increases its power over every facet of American life, from family and marriage to the environment, guns, and God.”

“Rules for Radical Conservatives: Beating the Left at Its Own Game to Take Back America” by David Kahane
“This book is a witty and much-needed take on the tactics that many politicians use - and that we must understand and counteract if we are to be successful in changing our ways. It pains me to say this, but the message of this book is correct. Conservatives need to understand what Alinsky tactics are all about.  Highly recommended.” says one reviewer.

"Trickle Up Poverty: Stopping Obama's Attack on Our Borders, Economy and Security," by Michael Savage.  According to Mr. Savage, the president is a leftist adolescent, a narcissist whose megalomania and grand designs threaten to destroy traditional America: "President Obama is like a destructive child who takes apart a priceless watch that was carefully passed down to him," he writes. "Without regard for the value of what he holds, he recklessly scatters the pieces on the floor and then can't put them back together again."
Ted Nugent:  “If Dirty Harry wrote books instead of blowing away bad guys, he would have written "Trickle Up Poverty." Thankfully, Michael Savage wrote it instead.”

“The film opens and closes with a quote from the Book of Job, and at a key moment the gospel hymn "Oh Happy Day" serenades the audience. It is, the makers say, the ultimate feelgood movie - about the miracle of life itself.  The movie in question is Secretariat, the true life story of an American thoroughbred race horse that won the Triple Crown in 1973, and it is the latest attempt by Hollywood to recruit cinema-goers from the Bible Belt.”

LEFTIST WATCH
George Soros, a champion of liberal causes, has been directing his money to groups that work on health care and the environment, rather than electoral politics. Asked if the prospect of Republican control of one or both houses of Congress concerned him, he said: “….I’m not in a position to stop it. I don’t believe in standing in the way of an avalanche.”

In the afternoon of April 1, 1983, Barack Obama, then a senior at Columbia University, made his way into the Great Hall of Manhattan’s Cooper Union to attend a “Socialist Scholars Conference.” There Obama discovered his vocation as a community organizer, as well as a political program to guide him throughout his life. The conference itself was not a secret, but it held a secret, for it was there that a demoralized and frustrated socialist movement largely set aside strategies of nationalization and turned increasingly to local organizing as a way around the Reagan presidency — and its own spotty reputation.…..Obama attended the 1983 and 1984 Socialist Scholars conferences, and quite possibly the 1985 conclave as well. A detailed account of these conferences (along with many other events from Obama’s radical past) and the evidence for Obama’s attendance at them can be found in my new book, “Radical-in-Chief: Barack Obama and the Untold Story of American Socialism.” The 1983 Conference, billed as a tribute to Marx, was precisely when Obama discovered his vocation for community organizing. ….Obama’s connection to socialist ideologues didn’t end with his recruitment into the ranks of community organizers. It began there and blossomed into a quarter century of intricate relationships with both on-the-record and in-all-but-name socialists. I’ve spent the last two years in the archives unraveling the connections. Here are a few.

So would aiding and abetting terrorists to kill US soldiers qualify as behavior unbefitting of a sitting US senator? On October 12, Senator Barabara Boxer (D-CA) secured diplomatic courtesy letters that allowed Code Pink activists to travel to Fallujah, Iraq in late 2004 to donate $600,000 worth of humanitarian aid to the people who had just killed 51 Americans and wounded 560 more earlier that month.

An Afghan woman whose nose was cut off by her husband under the Taliban's authoritarian rule was honored this weekend at an event in California, where she unveiled her new prosthetic nose for the first time.

The ideology that reigns in Saudi Arabia comes into plain view on the website of the Council of Senior Religious Scholars, where boys and girls sharing a swimming pool causes "mischief and evil" and bringing flowers to a hospital patient is to be discouraged because it's a foreign custom that "imitates Allah's adversaries."

A senior Muslim cleric who runs Britain’s largest network of Sharia courts says that there is no such thing as rape within marriage.

A film portraying the real-life stoning of an Iranian woman is opening in London, but it's a film the Iranian government does not want the world to see. The film's director claims some European governments have been reluctant to support it - fearful of antagonising Iran's regime.

ACTIVISM
In 2003, Lt. Col. Allen West forced an Iraqi prisoner to the ground, counted down to zero and fired a pistol over his head, scaring him into revealing planned attacks on U.S. troops. The Army relieved him of command. In ordinary times, such an event might destroy a man's career in public service. But 2010 is no ordinary time, and Mr. West may soon be in command again—this time as a tea-party-backed, Republican congressman from South Florida.

The Combat Veterans for Congress PAC is dedicated to supporting the election of fiscally conservative Combat Veterans to Congress. We seek Combat Veterans For Congress who believe in limited government, will rein in the out of control spending of Congress, are committed to preserving and defending the U.S. Constitution, and will support the independence and freedom of the individual as outlined in the Bill of Rights. We support Combat Veterans For Congress who are dedicated to promoting The Free Enterprise System creating the greatest economic engine in the history of mankind, provide for a strong national defense, and will endorse the teaching of U.S. history and the Founding Fathers’ core values in educational institutions.

This organization supports twenty six combat veterans running for Congress, including our own Dick Muri:  A Sept. poll showed he is within 3% of defeating Adam Smith.

GLOBALONEY
The radical green movement is all about scaring the public into adopting unpopular policy initiatives, such as hefty taxes on important sources of energy and increased government direction of our lives through regulation. The Chicken Little strategy can work if the possibility of major disruptions such as a devastating Katrina-style hurricane push people into embracing protection from Washington. Unfortunately for the scaremongers, the disruptions just aren't happening…..worldwide hurricane activity has reached a 33-year low. That's why British screenwriter Richard Curtis released a video for the "10:10" campaign…The short "No Pressure" film used techniques right out of a horror flick to depict a schoolteacher blowing up two children who failed to show any interest in pestering their parents to install insulation or squiggly light bulbs to "keep the planet safe for everyone."

In light of the recent environmental controversy over splattergate, where the green propaganda ad in the United Kingdom explosively became gory red in the classroom, it is time to be reminded that the Nazis started out green but became bloody red. This political reality came much to the dismay of many German conservationists as they slowly found out the real intent of Adolf Hitler.

Stephen Moore:  California’s Green Nightmare:  It's hard to know where the fairy tale of "green jobs" first came from. It was probably a clever marketing scheme by radical environmentalists who realized that their anti-growth climate change agenda wasn't going to sell among the American electorate if workers realized how many jobs would be eviscerated by the new taxes and regulation. So, from somewhere out of Madison Avenue or K Street, the left devised the green jobs story line: we can impose a $1 trillion new tax on the U.S. economy over the next decade, and it will save jobs,

This is what some liberals are saying now:  “Why Obama Is in the Jaws of Political Death……most politically engaged elites have reached the same conclusions: the White House is in over its head, isolated, insular, arrogant and clueless about how to get along with or persuade members of Congress, the media, the business community or working-class voters. This view is held by Fox News pundits, executives and anchors at the major old-media outlets, reporters who cover the White House, Democratic and Republican congressional leaders and governors, many Democratic business people and lawyers who raised big money for Obama in 2008, and even some members of the Administration just beyond the inner circle.”

“There is a new disease spreading like a cancer in doctors' offices and hospitals throughout the U.S. I have named it Doctor Unavailability Syndrome (DUS).”

Private health insurance in the U.S. will be dead in three years, said U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn."There will be no insurance industry left in three years," Coburn told the Republican Women's Club of Tulsa County. "That is by design. You’re going to make insurance unaffordable for everyone -- which is what they want. Because if there’s no private insurance left, what’s left? Government-centered, government-run, single-payer health care.”

A poll showing Republican challenger Ruth McClung leading four–term Democratic incumbent Raul Grijalva 39%-37% in Arizona 7. This district was designed to be Arizona’s second Hispanic majority House district (it was 54% Hispanic in 2000) and to be safe Democratic

Every passing year sees significant growth in the mass of Americans dependent on the federal government for life's necessities, from basic nutrition to shelter and health care. This implacable trend — long a concern of economists and political scientists — is beginning to alarm ordinary citizens as well. Why the increase? Well, for one thing, dependency-creating programs keep offering Americans more and more benefits. Government support for dependent persons has grown from $7,293 per person in 1962, to $31,950 last year (both figures expressed in 2005 dollars). That's a more than fourfold increase in the richness of the benefits, making dependence on government an ever-sweeter deal — one that gets harder and harder to walk away from. Another reason is that fewer and fewer people pay for the richer benefits. All adult Americans can vote, but not all voters pay taxes. In 2008, more than 132 million Americans paid no income taxes. That's nearly half — 43.6 percent — of all Americans, more than three times the percentage that prevailed just 25 years earlier.

LATE NITE
Jay Leno:     The White House said that the Democrats have “the momentum” going into midterm elections. Of course you have momentum when you’re going downhill fast…..Vice President Joe Biden says that President Obama has asked him to run with him in 2012. So on behalf of all late night hosts, thank you Mr. President……For the first time in history, there are 100,000 home foreclosures in the month of September. A hundred-thousand people were told they’re going to lose their house. A hundred-thousand and one, if you count Nancy Pelosi.

WISE WORDS
"How prone all human institutions have been to decay; how subject the best-formed and most wisely organized governments have been to lose their check and totally dissolve; how difficult it has been for mankind, in all ages and countries, to preserve their dearest rights and best privileges, impelled as it were by an irresistible fate of despotism."
                             –James Monroe
