op ed review 11/28

President Obama emerges from the midterm election with uncertain prospects for the next one in 2012, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll. Nearly half of his own base want someone to challenge him for the Democratic nomination.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will give up more than just the majority in the next Congress – she’ll be stripped of her right to use military aircraft. Speaker-in-waiting John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said he would not be using military planes for his domestic travel.

Now he wants your money. The developer of the so called "Ground Zero Mosque" is applying for federal taxpayer money to help him build the controversial and contentious project. The funds are designated to help lower Manhattan recover from the 9-11 terrorist attacks, which took place just around the corner from the proposed mosque and cultural center location.

An illegal immigrant has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the slaying of former federal intern Chandra Levy.

Last week, the White House released a list of the 15 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. For the most part, the list is a who's who of great Americans -- with everyone from civil rights leader John Lewis to baseball legend Stan Musial. And then there's John Sweeney, the former president of both the Service Employees International Union and American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. The real reason Sweeney is being given this award seems pretty transparent. In 2008, when Sweeney was still head of the AFL-CIO, the union spent more than $53 million helping elect Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats.

“Voting for Bristol Palin was great practice for conservatives with phone banking and multi-media for 2012”

Bristol Palin lost to actress Jennifer Grey in Tuesday night's finale of "Dancing with the Stars," capping a reality-television run in which Ms. Palin lured viewers, votes and controversy.

Keep your eye on this guy: Allen West, a 22-year Army veteran, is preparing for Washington a bit like he would for a battlefield. His "high and tight" hairstyle will be one of the only buzz cuts in Congress. He plans to carry a camouflage bag, not a briefcase. And on a recent morning, while others in the Republican Party's large incoming freshman class jockeyed for office space, he declared himself largely indifferent. "I've lived in tents," said West, who in January will become the first black Republican to represent Florida since 1876.

Here’s LTC Allen West speaking to the American Freedom Tour:

Saying Washington’s ballooning budget deficit means “we have all run out of time,” Gov. Chris Gregoire (D) proposed eliminating the state’s health insurance for the poor and needy, ending the state food assistance, no longer funding programs for gifted students and delaying grant payments that help low-income students go to college.

Why Dino lost: “… in 2010 the Washington electorate did not display a Republican tilt in their turnout like much of the rest of the country. In fact, the partisan makeup of Washington voters who cast a ballot this year continued to show an upward tick in the state's Democratic partisan advantage. When Rossi lost to Christine Gregoire in 2004 Democrats held a four-point advantage in partisan identification among those who voted. In the huge Democratic year of 2008 they held a ten-point advantage in party identification. This year that spread increased to 12 points for Democrats. Rossi won more of the Independent and Republican vote than he did in his two previous statewide races, but the goalposts keep getting farther and farther away……the bottom line (as any Democrat will happily tell you) is that Rossi lost. But his performance in this race would have guaranteed him a U.S. Senate seat in almost any other state in the country. He faced a Washington electorate that was extremely polarized in 2010 with little if any crossover voting. And in a state where Democrats outnumbered Republicans by such a significant margin, even an exceptional candidate with a first rate campaign could not overcome that kind of math.”

According to a new poll, Tea Party activists and conservatives are willing to put their money where their mouths are and stop purchasing products from companies that promote President Barack Obama’s agenda. The results of the survey led the pollster to conclude that Tea Partiers could “realistically” lead a boycott of such companies.

The average American could buy a house for the amount of money it takes to run Air Force One every hour.

Jeffrey Kuhner, Washington Times, 11/26/10

President Obama is engaging in a relentless assault on our freedoms and constitutional government. The growing backlash against the new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) airport screening procedures signifies that Americans finally may have had enough.

There is a grass-roots revolt against state-sanctioned sexual harassment. And who can blame the protesters? Children are stripped of their shirts, and their private parts are touched. Nuns and old ladies are groped by intrusive TSA agents. Breasts have been fondled. Men's crotches have been patted down. Full-body scanners show images of people naked - a clear violation of privacy and civil liberties. The administration insists that the enhanced procedures are vital for national security. The rationale: Last year's underwear bomber nearly blew up a plane flying over Detroit. Hence, everyone's private parts are now the property of the federal government - at least when flying.

This is wrong and dangerous. Airport screening procedures have been a huge experiment in mass political correctness. For fear of insulting Muslims, the U.S. government has insisted that all Americans take off their shoes, pull out their belts and walk through metal detectors at airports. Americans have patiently put up with these inconveniences. But now, for many, enough is enough. "Don't touch my junk" has become a national rallying cry.

The central problem with modern airport security is that it falsely assumes that every person - each of the 7 billion people who inhabit the planet-is an equal terrorist threat. The 80-year-old Irish Catholic nun, the 3-year-old toddler, the 61-year-old bladder cancer survivor whose urine bag was punctured by TSA apparatchiks - all of them, according to Mr. Obama, are potential suicide bombers. They're not. To pretend they are is to engage in leftist multicultural fantasy. It embodies the triumph of ideology over reality - the deranged belief that anyone at any time is a lurking jihadist.

Islamic terrorism is not an open-ended, universal characteristic. Rather, it is a specific, narrowly defined phenomenon. It is fueled by Muslim extremists bent on waging a holy war against the West. Its perpetrators tend to be young adults from the Middle East, North Africa, the Arab world and the Muslim ghettos of Europe. Most jihadists fit this profile. What is needed is not more groping, crotch-grabbing or nude screening, but better intelligence-gathering, random checking and targeted profiling.

Washington insists on perpetrating the illusion that a Christian grandmother in Iowa poses the same possible national security threat as a 19-year-old Yemenite exchange student majoring in Islamic studies. Hence, America is squandering precious resources and manpower, as well as abrogating basic civil liberties and humiliating its population, in order to appease the sensitivities of the Muslim lobby.

Moreover, the new TSA procedures mark another major step in Mr. Obama's drive to impose state socialism. If anyone else did what TSA agents do regularly, they rightly would be charged with sexual assault. Mr. Obama has done the unthinkable: He has extended the federal government's reach into our most private, intimate body parts. Big Brother not only watches us in the nude, he can routinely molest us at will.

The administration is not restricting its unprecedented power grab to airports. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano recently said that trains, boats and subways also may implement the same screening procedures. If the White House has its way, Americans will be getting felt up on the Metro and Amtrak every day - morning, afternoon and night. Ultimately, these measures are not only degrading and wrongheaded. They are profoundly illiberal, reflecting a deep-seated contempt for individual rights and civil dignity. They also reveal a radical leftist outlook that views Americans not as self-governing citizens, but as subjects of a nanny state.

Like many on the progressive left, Mr. Obama is an anti-American political thug. He despises the Constitution and capitalism. He bristles under the restraints of democratic governance and the system of checks and balances. From Vladimir Lenin to Fidel Castro to Hugo Chavez, socialist leaders have masked their will to power by portraying themselves as visionary thinkers - sophisticated intellectuals seeking social justice. In reality, they have one goal: revolution.

Mr. Obama has embarked America upon that perilous path. He has de facto nationalized health care, the financial sector, the insurance industry, student loans and major automakers. He has appointed numerous policy czars with vast Cabinet-level powers who have not been confirmed - or even vetted - by the Senate. His administration violated parliamentary procedures and repeatedly bribed and arm-twisted members of Congress to ram through Obamacare - against the expressed will of the people. His surrogates sought to directly manipulate and interfere in primary elections on behalf of pro-Obama candidates - likely committing several felonies. His Interior Department falsified scientific reports to justify the temporary ban on oil drilling in the Gulf Coast. His Justice Department has refused to prosecute blatant voter fraud and intimidation. Mr. Obama has referred to his critics as "enemies" who must be "punished."…..

Mr. Obama's regime has abused its power and fostered anti-democratic behavior. He is slowly erecting a soft police state. It is not one with a fascist jackboot on your face but with a unionized TSA bureaucrat in your crotch - all in the name of public safety. Say hello to Big Brother Barack.

Edited for length, read the entire article here:

“The utter irrelevance of New START to nuclear safety was dramatically underscored last week by the revelation of that North Korean uranium enrichment plant, built with such sophistication that it left the former head of the Los Alamos National Laboratory "stunned." It could become the ultimate proliferation factory. Pyongyang is already a serial proliferator. It has nothing else to sell. Iran, Syria and al-Qaeda have the money to buy. Iran's Islamic Republic lives to bring down the Great Satan. North Korea, nuclear-armed and in a succession crisis, has just shelled South Korean territory for the first time since the Korean armistice. Obama peddling New START is the guy looking for his wallet under the lamppost because that's where the light is good -- even though he lost the wallet on the other side of town.

A British criminologist and New York University professor laments that “The dominant voice of crime policy is no longer the expert or even the practitioner but that of the long-suffering, ill-served people -- especially of 'the victim' and the fearful, anxious members of the public. Liberals suffer from what I call a "reverse morality complex." They have an obsessive compulsion to categorize good people as evil while praising evil people as good. For this reason, they are incapable of being trusted with criminal justice policy, not to mention national security.

A funny thing happened on the way to Al Gore's carbon-free utopia. Gore and his global warming buddies at the Chicago Climate Exchange have bailed out, leaving this company that sells hot air a worthless shell. The price of carbon credits has plummeted to less than $.05 cents a tonne, a far cry from the lofty predictions of $15 a tonne and up. That is not the first sign that investment in everything surrounding global warming is being uncovered as a far cry from economic reality. Green jobs are now being hailed as the next big hoax.

Al Gore now admits his support for corn-based ethanol was "not a good policy. "It's hard once such a program is put in place to deal with the lobbies that keep it going….One of the reasons I made that mistake is that I paid particular attention to the farmers in my home state of Tennessee, and I had a certain fondness for the farmers in the state of Iowa because I was about to run for president."

Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell (R) is slamming the Interior Department’s designation of large Arctic regions as “critical habitat” for polar bears threatened by climate change, alleging the decision will slow oil-and-gas drilling. The designation requires federal agencies to consult with Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before allowing or funding actions that could harm the bear’s northern Alaskan habitat. “Such consultations are increasingly being misused to challenge responsible resource development,” Parnell said in a prepared statement Wednesday. “This additional layer of regulatory burden will not only slow job creation and economic growth here and for our nation, but will also slow oil and gas exploration efforts.”

Federal prosecutors say a Somali-born teenager plotted to carry out a car bomb attack at a crowded Christmas tree lighting ceremony in downtown Portland OR on Friday but the bomb turned out to be a dud supplied by undercover agents as part of a sting. An eye-opening report released by the BBC on Monday found that roughly 5,000 students attending 40 Muslim schools and after-school clubs in the UK have been taught the Saudi national curriculum -- which includes subjects like chopping off the hands of thieves and the demonization of Jews and gay people. “When I pick up a book, the thing I want most is to feel that the author has invited me on a journey, one where I can see, hear, and almost touch the world the writer has awakened. Sarah Palin’s America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag does just that. The writer’s voice is warm and welcoming. The tone is optimistic and patriotic. And the writing style is uncluttered and forthright. Palin presents the American values she holds dear through a blend of personal stories and excerpts from writings that have inspired her.”

Since it was launched in 1911, Boys' Life, the official publication of the Boy Scouts of America, has become one of America's most popular magazines -- growing from an original circulation of 6,000 to roughly 8 million today. Month after month, year after year, it has featured news, stories, jokes, and practical how-to instructions that appeal not only to Scouts, but to any boy of any age.

“We're approaching the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Ronald Reagan: February 6, 2011. It's time to begin thinking seriously about an appropriate national commemoration of this good man and great president. Let me suggest something: A museum in Washington dedicated to the victims of communism. The struggle against communism impelled American foreign policy for almost half a century. That struggle was also the central concern of Ronald Reagan's political life.”

Dennis Prager: “According to polls…conservative Americans are happier than liberal Americans. Liberals respond this way: “If we’re unhappier, it’s because we are more upset than conservatives over the plight of those less fortunate than ourselves.” But common sense and data suggest other explanations. For one thing, conservatives on the same socioeconomic level as liberals give more charity and volunteer more time than do liberals. And as regards the suffering of non-Americans, for at least half a century conservatives have been far more willing to sacrifice American treasure and American blood (often their own) for other nations’ liberty. Both of these facts refute the liberals-are-more-concerned-about-others explanation for liberal unhappiness…….Utopians will always be less happy than those who know that suffering is inherent to human existence. The utopian compares America to utopia and finds it terribly wanting. The conservative compares America to every other civilization that has ever existed and walks around wondering how he got so lucky as to be born or naturalized an American.”

Sarah Palin dismissed Barbara Bush's recent criticism as a matter of class privilege in an interview with Laura Ingraham: "I don't want to concede that we have to get used to this kind of thing, because I don't think the majority of Americans want to put up with the blue-bloods — and I want to say it with all due respect because I love the Bushes — the blue bloods who want to pick and chose their winners instead of allowing competition," Palin said

“Rich liberals say they want to pay higher taxes. Great. Let them. Who is stopping them from doing so voluntarily?”

The UK Telegraph: “Allen West might just be the black president to save the US in 2012 from the ruins created by the previous one.”……..Even the only “dirt” on West so far turns out to be good dirt. He retired from the army after almost 22 years service because of an incident in Iraq when he interrogated at an Iraqi police officer who he believed had information about a planned ambush. Since the detainee wouldn’t speak, West fired a pistol next to his head into a barrel, so frightening him that he spilled the beans. This landed West with $5,000 fine for having violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice. At the hearing West was asked by his defense attorney if he’d do it again: “If it’s about the lives of my men and their safety I’d go through hell with a gasoline can.”

..“but what we’re doing, what we’re putting up with, what we’re accepting at this airport is so symbolic of us just not standing up and saying ‘enough is enough.’”—Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas)

Maybe it really did need to come to this. Maybe Americans had to literally have their privates groped by a government bureaucrat to finally realize that they have been the proverbial frogs sitting in a pot of water, unaware that they are being incrementally boiled to death. For those of you who still don’t get it, let me make it clear: The ultimate destination of Political Correctness is totalitarianism.

For decades, Americans have tolerated the drip, drip, drip of Marxist-inspired progressivism right under our collective noses. We’ve watched our public schools eliminate the Pledge of Allegiance, because patriotism is “unseemly.” We’ve watched the same do-gooders eliminate keeping score in kids’ sports because competition is “evil,” and anything which produces winners and losers—including free-market capitalism—is “damaging to one’s sense of self-esteem.”

We stood by while a Supreme Court said it was OK to take private property from one individual and give it to another one because the second person could improve the tax base. We ignored the Obama administration’s obliteration of bankruptcy laws in order to hand GM over to the unions which ran the company into the ground.

We’ve watched our soldiers get wounded and die to protect us, and said nothing when state governments didn’t get them ballots in time to vote in the last election. We’ve watched them struggle to “win hearts and minds” of people that hate us, and attempt to kill the bad guys with one hand tied behind their backs, due to the politically correct obscenity known as the Rules of Engagement. We’ve watched our borders being overrun by millions of illegals, and then tolerated sanctuary cities which protect them, and idiotic court decisions which grant them such things as drivers’ licenses, bank accounts and in-state tuition breaks at colleges. We’ve watched many of our state governments imploding because we allowed socialist/Marxists to bloat budgets with unaffordable union contracts, and then we meekly surrender when those same hacks outlaw smoking, trans-fats, soda pop and kiddie toys at hamburger joints “for our own good.”…..

We’ve been sucking our collective thumbs while these same people championed “alternative lifestyles” which have led to a 40% out-of-wedlock birth rate, relegating millions of fatherless young men to miserable lives of poverty and crime. We’ve allowed the media marxists to corrupt the popular culture and turn morality into an “anything goes” affair in which “feeling good” is the only thing that matters.

Government of, by and for the people? Not when some TSA clock-puncher can put his hand on my “junk” as a condition for flying. Not when all of this invasive garbage is all about protecting political correctness at the expense of freedom—and sanity.

It’s “insensitive” to single out certain people for different treatment? Baloney! The progressives have been doing it for years. They’ve been playing the rich off the poor, the blacks off the whites, the gays off the straights, one grievance group off another, ad nauseam. And if the aforementioned concept of affirmative action isn’t the essence of singling out particular groups for different treatment, then I don’t know what is.

I’m sorry that innocent Muslims might be forced to endure greater scrutiny than other groups of Americans when it comes to flying. But not nearly as sorry as I am for the soldiers and others whose lives are dedicated to keeping American free, even the real enemies of freedom hide behind political correctness and pretend an “overseas contingency operation” isn’t a war against radical Islam. Not nearly as sorry as I am for the millions of Americans forced to endure de facto totalitarianism every time they wish to fly, because the elites refuse to bow to the reality that terrorism is overwhelmingly a Muslim phenomenon—and has been for decades.

It’s time to fire the Queen of Cluelessness, aka Homeland Security Secretary Janet “The System Worked” Napolitano. It’s time to find out which government officials made the sweetheart deal with former HS Secretary Michael Chertoff who, it turns out, has been repping the Rapiscan full-body scanners the TSA is buying and installing—at a cost $300 million. It’s time to tell Muslims that while we understand your concerns, reality is reality, and we’re not about to turn our airports—and maybe our train stations, bus depots, shopping malls and our schools into armed camps in order to placate the folks at CAIR or the ACLU. And it’s way past time to put Muslims around the world on notice: if you truly want a fight to the finish, the formerly “sleeping giant” will be more than happy to accommodate you.

One more thing: if the Republicans have an ounce of guts, they’ll offer up a bill on the floor of Congress. It will state one thing: Every law Congress subjects Americans to, they will live under as well. That goes for everything from enduring the same pat downs inflicted on ordinary Americans at airports, to the same Social Security and Medicaid programs good enough for the rest of us, and everything in between.

Like Ron Paul said: Enough is enough.

“…..the one advantage we have in this war: In a lucky stroke, all the terrorists are swarthy, foreign-born, Muslim males…This would give us a major leg up -- if only the country weren't insane. Is there any question that we'd be looking for Swedes if the 9/11 terrorists, the shoe bomber, the diaper bomber and the printer cartridge bomber had all been Swedish? If the Irish Republican Army were bombing our planes, wouldn't we be looking for people with Irish surnames and an Irish appearance? Only because the terrorists are Muslims do we pretend not to notice who keeps trying to blow up our planes.”

The 90-plus members of the House Class of 2010 are a diverse lot. In their day jobs, they were funeral directors, gospel singers, football players, farmers, nurses and retired military officers. In one way, however, they are not diverse: nearly 90 percent of them are Republicans. Here is a look at 10 potential stars of the incoming freshman class. And, yes, they are almost all Republicans. #1 Jaime Herrera, R-Washington

Amid all the recriminations about the electoral ineffectiveness of some Tea Party–backed candidates, it’s easy to lose sight of a central fact: It’s doubtful that, without a newly emboldened grassroots movement, Republican politicians would have been able to create enough momentum against Obama to produce the landslide of November 2. As ebullient progressives descended on Washington for Obama’s inauguration in January 2009, many Republicans assumed the fetal position. Party strategists wondered just how much they could openly oppose the new president’s agenda, lest they be tarred as obstructionist or even racist……

To paraphrase Pogo, “Barack Obama has met the enemy and it is his own party.” The Democrats are doing all they can to see that their president is a one-termer. In only two weeks since midterm elections exposed the Democrat's vulnerability, the political party with palpable problems continues to alienate the electorate. Through arrogance, hubris and world class public relations tone-deafness, the Democrats have managed, in less than three weeks, to convert defeat into even bigger defeat. Last week it was Nancy Pelosi, thumbing her nose at cooler Democratic Party heads who begged her to step down voluntarily…..

Two views on Sarah Palin:

“….And then it hit me. The reason Palin has become such a lightening rod, a kingmaker and a punching bag, a celebrity and a power player, is simple. It's because she's so gosh darn happy. For her fans, like the ones I had the pleasure of meeting in Chicago, she's refreshingly upbeat and resilient, the bubbly friend from childhood who was always great at cheering you up and cheerleading you on. But for her detractors, nothing raises the ire of cynical liberals more than a happy-go-lucky, totally unburdened, freethinking and self-assured conservative woman who has everything she wants and then some. And without anyone's help…..How dare she? Liberalism, after all, needs to imagine an unhappy populace. Passing sweeping entitlement programs and convincing voters that big government is the answer only works if people are frustrated with their stations in life.”

Mona Charen: “By telling Barbara Walters that she thinks she can defeat President Obama, Sarah Palin has dimmed hopes cherished by sensible Republicans that she might decide against a run for the White House in 2012. Here are just some of the reasons she should not run. The Republican nominee should be someone with vast and impressive experience in government and the private sector -- and a proven record. Voters chose a novice with plenty of star power in 2008 and will be inclined to swing strongly in the other direction in 2012….”

Pat Buchanan: Missiles fired from the Chinese mainland could destroy five of the six major U.S. air bases in the Far East. So states a new report of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, adding: "Saturation missile strikes could destroy U.S. air defenses, runways, parked aircraft, and fuel and maintenance facilities. Complicating this scenario is the future deployment of China's anti-ship ballistic missile, which could hold U.S. aircraft carriers at bay outside their normal operating range." Opposite Taiwan, China's missile force has reached 1,600.

Inflated self-esteem can be decidedly counterproductive. Korean students, in contrast, ranked themselves last in self-judged mathematical skills and took first place in actual mathematical performance……it's not unusual for 25 percent of American students to self-judge themselves to be in the top 1 percent. The downside can be a declining nation that's overstocked with egotistical and incompetent narcissists. That might be the problem at the White House.”

op ed review 10/14

In an election marked by dramatic defections from the Democratic Party, older voters swung hardest. Voters over 65 favored Republicans by a 21-point margin after flirting with Democrats in the 2006 midterm elections and favoring John McCain by a relatively narrow 8-point margin in 2008.

There are nine House races that have still not yet been called, and a few are almost certainly headed for recounts. All the seats are currently held by Democrats. Republicans lead in five. The GOP made historic gains of 60 seats on Election Night -- the most in a midterm since World War Two. That number could jump to somewhere in the neighborhood of 65 seats if current tallies hold.

Florida's first black Republican congressman since Reconstruction credited the Tea Party with standing up against allegations of racism from the left in supporting his successful candidacy.

A group of Senate conservatives issued an early challenge to their Republican colleagues, calling on them in an open letter to support a ban on earmarks — a stance the House GOP embraced earlier this year.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Wednesday he intends to take commercial flights home when he moves up to speaker in the new Congress. “Over the last 20 years, I have flown back and forth to my district on commercial aircraft, and I am going to continue to do that,” he told reporters.

God Bless the Tea Party
Michael Novak, National Review 11/8

I doubt that what happened in the United States on November 2 could have occurred in any European country. In fact, it was almost unprecedented in the United States.

No president in American history has ever been so thoroughly discredited after two years as Barack Obama. When Pres. Bill Clinton’s party lost 54 seats in 1994, that number was shockingly high. But in 2010, the Democrats have lost at least 60 seats in the House (the branch closest to the people) and six in the Senate. Counting as allies some conservative Democrats, the Senate Republicans, while slightly less numerous than Democrats, might emerge with a working majority, though not the two-thirds necessary to override a veto.

In his first two years, the president convinced many millions of Americans that he wants to make the U.S. more like European welfare states. The American people hate the very idea, and they simply rebelled.

What is most striking about this election is the rising up of a huge popular movement with virtually no visible national leader — a movement spontaneously arising out of the refusal to lose the country our Founding Fathers (Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and the others) built solidly on certain fixed, eternal principles: firm principles about the dignity and responsibility before God of every woman and man, about the freedom of the economy from State management (but not from necessary State regulation), and about the universal opportunity of every citizen to rise as far as their talents and hard work will take them.

President Obama pays obeisance to these principles, but his heart is not in it. He mainly trusts government, national government, one powerful central government. The record of his two years in office is repellent — and many, many Americans simply refuse to march in that direction. The Democrats have controlled everything for two years, and their leadership, with too much left-wing enthusiasm, allowed President Obama to take the bit into his mouth and run pell-mell toward the European model.

He could not get all that far, in this deeply whig country. “Whig” is a way of saying “the party of liberty,” the party of personal responsibility, the party of economic opportunity and personal creativity, the party fiercely committed to the defense of liberty (whence the eagle as our national symbol, the eagle with seven arrows in one claw and a large olive branch in the other). The whig tendency in America has always been suspicious of government (as the source of most abuses of human rights, as inefficient, as a breeding ground of corruption). The Whig party, transformed into the new Republican party after 1856, became the party that abolished slavery, and is alive and well today in the Tea Party movement. It is the party of the individual — not the atomized individual, the individual alone, but the civic individual in free cooperation with other individuals.

In recent years, I have wondered how much longer God would continue to bless America, that country so favored by Providence for so long. The mass-media culture of America, its movies, its glitzy magazines, and its public speech (even in churches) are becoming more and more decadent, less and less under the sway of personal moral responsibility, more relativist, less under the self-control of reason. That “superculture” of the media hangs over the nation like a miasma of moral smog. Below it, thank God, there are still tens of millions willing to resist it.

That is the hope of America today. It rises up from the people not yet incapacitated by the moral decline of our elites. The election of 2010 signified a moral revolution, a cultural revolution, much more profoundly than a political revolution. We will see how long it can endure and grow from strength to strength — or whether it will self-destruct, as so many movements do.

God, if You can no longer bless the whole nation, please bless the Tea Party movement.

Sarah Palin Now that the dust has settled on the 2010 midterm elections, it’s slowly becoming clear just how monumental the results really are. We saw an extreme left-wing agenda suffer a crushing defeat. At the ballot box, voters took Obamacare and the stimulus and wrapped them right around the necks of those same House members and senators who had arrogantly dismissed the concerns voiced in countless town halls and Tea Party rallies up and down the country…….I hope that commonsense patriots will join me in applauding the real heroes of this election year: the Tea Party Americans. In 2008, we were told that we had to “move beyond Reagan.” Well, some of us refused to believe that America chose big-government European-style socialism. American voters elected a politician who cloaked his agenda in the language of moderation. Once the mask was removed, Americans rejected his “fundamental transformation.” The Tea Party reminded us that Reaganism is still our foundation. I think the Gipper is smiling down on us today waving the Gadsden Flag.

"On Tuesday voters rejected President Obama's attempt to remake America in the image of an imploding Europe -- not just by overwhelmingly electing Republican candidates in the House, but by preferring dozens of maverick conservatives who ran against establishment Washington. Why the near-historic rebuke? Out-of-control spending, unchecked borrowing, vast new entitlements and unsustainable debt -- all at a time of economic stagnation. So what is next? Like the recovering addict who checks himself into rehab, a debt-addicted America just snapped out of its borrowing binge, is waking up with the shakes, and hopes there is still a chance at recovery. It won't be easy. Obama and his Democratic Congress ran up nearly $3 trillion in new debt in just 21 months -- after running a disingenuous 2008 campaign that falsely promised to rein in the fiscal irresponsibility that had been rampant during the spendthrift Bush administration. So the voters intervened and sent America in for rehab treatment. In our three-step road to recovery, we, the sick patient, must first end the denial, then accept the tough medicine, and finally change the entrenched habits that caused the addiction."

“'We can't afford it' still rings in the ears of those old enough to remember what parents or grandparents said when we asked for an expensive toy as a child, or a car at 16. That Puritan ethic remains in the DNA of many Americans. It is now up to Republicans to get it out and remind us of what fiscal and personal responsibility can do to restore financial solvency. It may take a while and there will be some discomfort and even pain involved. But in the end, we will all be better off than we are now and much better off than we will be if we fail to reduce our unsustainable debt."

-Cal Thomas

“Mr. Obama doesn't recognize this America. In place of liberty, he substitutes redistributionist notions of social justice. Rather than a single American nation, he institutionalizes differences for political gain. Instead of patriotism and pride, he promotes internationalism and guilt. America's decline is not the result of historical forces out of our control, but of condemning the history that brought the United States to its position of leadership. America will only resurge when it recaptures the moral image of the country as a land of individualism, opportunity and patriotism. That is an America Mr. Obama would rather do without.”

"Unlike the Democrats today, [John F.] Kennedy never pretended he was poor or even middle class; he let us know he was upper crust. And if you doubted it for a second, he'd put Jackie on display with her very expensive designer fashions. Nile Gardiner in the UK Telegraph: “The decline and fall of Barack Obama: five key factors that drove the midterm revolution 1. America is a conservative nation 2. The Obama presidency has behaved in an imperial fashion

Bob Beckel is one Democrat who makes no attempt to sugarcoat, or otherwise spin, the defeat that the Democratic Party suffered on Tuesday. As he quipped to me last week, “Did you get the license-plate number of the truck that ran over my party?” Yet at the same time, he makes an astute point about the politics of 2010 that should challenge the confidence of any Republican, as well as any Democrat. The Internet, Beckel says, is on its way to trumping both political parties. The Internet has, indeed, created a new organizing mechanism….

As he promised it would be, Barack Obama's presidency has been transformative, but not as he intended. Whether it lasts two or six more years, it is an exhausted volcano because its biggest consequence may already have happened: It has resuscitated the right, making 2010 conservatism's best year in 30 years - since the election of Ronald Reagan.

President Barack Obama seems more concerned with appeasing environmental extremists in his administration than he is with the lost jobs of poor Americans. He’s letting the environmentalists run wild with long pent-up schemes to force a change in the American way of life that includes small cars, small apartments and, for many, a return to an idealized 19th century lifestyle. It’s not China that’s responsible for American job losses; it’s Washington’s fault for shutting down whole industries and preventing new jobs from being created.

The United States got a grilling last week at the UN Human Rights Council, where its unmatched accomplishments went on trial before a jury of killers, er, peers. You see, in the upside-down world of the UN, countries like China, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are recognized as defenders of human rights -- holding coveted seats on the council. President Bush refused to join this farce, but the Obama gang naturally jumped right on board.

"Can we solve the problems confronting us? Well, the answer is an unequivocal and emphatic 'yes.' To paraphrase Winston Churchill, I did not take the oath I have just taken with the intention of presiding over the dissolution of the world's strongest economy. In the days ahead I will propose removing the roadblocks that have slowed our economy and reduced productivity. Steps will be taken aimed at restoring the balance between the various levels of government. Progress may be slow -- measured in inches and feet, not miles -- but we will progress. It is time to reawaken this industrial giant, to get government back within its means, and to lighten our punitive tax burden. And these will be our first priorities, and on these principles, there will be no compromise."
