THIS WEEK’S NEWS
Less than a week before the Republican convention begins, the race for the White House is a virtual tie. According to a Fox News poll of likely voters, the Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan ticket receives the backing of 45 percent, while the Barack Obama-Joe Biden ticket garners 44 percent.

Paul Ryan propelled Mitt Romney to a four-point lead over President Obama in Michigan.

Mitt Romney has opened up a 1-point lead in the key battleground state of Wisconsin, according to a poll released Tuesday.

President Barack Obama could lose his home state of Illinois in November, a new poll shows.

Former NY Jets and Oakland Raiders star Burgess Owens tells blacks not to vote for Obama.

In the most shocking survey this election cycle, a poll released today finds Mitt Romney leading President Barack Obama by 14 percentage points among likely Florida voters.
According to the latest Gallup data, Mitt Romney enjoys an 11-point advantage among voters age 65 and older.

In July Romney outraised Obama in all but 11 states and all 9 of the swing states.

In 2008 Barack Obama carried 54% of the Catholic vote. Today only 27% of Catholics support Obama. There are over 77 million Catholics in the United States.

The world's biggest bookseller has created a heat map to highlight whether Republican or Democrat slanted books are proving most popular in each of the country's 50 states. The heat map shows that books classified right wing are outselling Democrat style books in 44 of the U.S.'s 50 states. Even the traditional Democrat stronghold of California is seeing greater Republican sales.

A shocking development is rocking the Obama campaign, as a reliably supportive media outlet has published a cover story with the shocking caption, "Hit the Road, Barack: Why We Need a New President." This from Newsweek, a magazine which all too recently published a cover depicting Mr. Obama with a rainbow colored halo and the caption "The First Gay President." Even more important than the devastating content of the cover story is where it was published. Newsweek is published by Tina Brown, long a fixture of the media social scene, a trendsetter. The cover story represents a serious breach in the cofferdam erected around Obama and the progressive cause. It constitutes recognition that this particular emperor actually has no clothes.

First Lady Michelle Obama this week is serving as guest editor for iVillage.com, NBC’s “community of online women” that offers sexually explicit material, including graphic sex tips from prostitutes, “20  kinky things you SO can do,” and a list of “naughty” apps for mobile devices.

The Obama Justice Department has an affirmative action program to recruit attorneys and staff who are dwarfs or who have “psychiatric disabilities” or “severe intellectual disabilities.”

A billboard has appeared along I-35 in North Texas. The ad depicts two men in camouflage holding weapons. The text next to the picture, in a military style font, says “The Seals removed one threat to America,” a reference to the killing of Osama bin Laden. It continues, “Remove the other in November.”

The gold standard has returned to mainstream U.S. politics for the first time in 30 years, with a “gold commission” set to become part of official Republican party policy. The move shows how five years of easy monetary policy — and the efforts of congressman Ron Paul — have made the once-fringe idea of returning to gold-as-money a legitimate part of Republican debate.

As Republican platforms have since 1984, the Republican National Platform being drafted in Tampa, Fla., this week calls for a human life amendment to the U.S. Constitution and for legislation to make it clear that the 14th Amendment protects unborn children.

The GOP is turning what some see as a presidential slight aimed at business owners and entrepreneurs into a theme for a night of the Republican National Convention next week, titling Tuesday night’s session “We Built This!
U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., will speak during the opening night of the Republican National Convention in Tampa next Monday.

“How many government workers does it take to fix a broken faucet? Answer: more than 200. First, you need dozens to fill out paperwork. Then, you need someone to change the horseshoes of the department's imaginary horses. Then -- Wait. Horseshoes? Sadly, it's not a joke. The Mackinac Center's Jarrett Skorup reports: Despite having no horses, the water and sewerage department for the city of Detroit employs a horseshoer. Yet even with a department so bloated that it has a horseshoer and no horses, the local union president said it is "not possible" to eliminate positions.”

Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood told The Daily Caller that he is “very proud” of the Economic Recovery Act of 2009 that put 65,000 people to work with $48 billion in federal funds for the Department of Transportation, amounting to $738,461 per job.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Investor’s Business Daily Editorial 8/21

The battle is on between entrepreneurship and crony socialism, between candidates who believe innovative risk-takers create jobs and an administration that believes all blessings flow from the government. By President Obama's logic, Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps didn't really win all those medals on his record-setting run. The credit should go to those who built the pools he trained in and filled them with water.

Building on the reaction to President Obama's disparagement of entrepreneurs and businessmen large and small, the GOP at next week's Republican National Convention will dedicate Tuesday night to the theme of "We Built This!" Speakers will include Sher Valenzeula, a Latina candidate for lieutenant governor in Delaware. Her campaign website notes she and her husband started an upholstery business that makes padding for baseball umpires and military vests.

"Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive," the president famously has said of business owners. "Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business — you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

According to Obama, those of you who thought that those bridges and roads were built with the tax dollars paid by businesses and the people they employ were sadly mistaken. The GOP hopes to capitalize on the justified anger of those who made personal sacrifices and put long hours into building their businesses.

This disdain for the individual and the American system of free enterprise designed to let everyone reach the limits of his or her talents and ambitions should be the overarching theme of the 2012 presidential campaign. This is the president who, in a speech delivered at Osawatomie, Kan., in December, argued that while a limited government that preserves free markets "speaks to our rugged individualism" as Americans, such a system "doesn't work" and "has never worked" and that Americans must look to a more activist government that taxes more, spends more and regulates more.

In Obama's America, success is not to be applauded and encouraged; it must be punished. Wealth is not to be created, but to be redistributed. If you succeed, it's to someone else's credit; if you fail, it's someone else's fault.

President Obama has been fundamentally transforming America into a nation of wagon-riders rather than wagon-pullers. Entrepreneurs and risk-takers, those who designed and built the wagon, are denigrated as the evil 1%. But Obama has forgotten one thing: that to share prosperity, prosperity must first be created, and through taxation and regulation he has steadily reduced the incentives to do so.

“It's stunning for an immigrant from a socialist country to hear in the speeches of Democratic Party leaders platitudes taught in socialist countries. Even more stunning is how they resonate with people born in the free world. At the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th calls for "equality," "fairness," "sacrifices for collective good" and "social justice" aroused communist revolutionaries in Russia and ushered in the U.S.S.R. They demonized and obliterated any religion that interfered with government authority. They erased individualism and entrepreneurship from society. Animosity among ethnic groups was insidiously cultivated…..For more than 100 years, old and tired socialist propaganda brought out the worst in societies: envy, hate, intolerance and disrespect for human life, just as these traits have increased in the last four years in the U.S.  The U.S. is not 19th century tsarist Russia, but it is being transformed into something far different from the "land of the free.”

“To defeat Obama, the Romney-Ryan duo must contrast our great Legacy of Liberty with the oppressive socialist doctrines advocated by the Left. They must energize the largest conservative grassroots movement in history and enlist the support of American Patriots from all walks of life. They must alert our countrymen that we are on the downside of the fatal cycle of democracy and that the only way to circumvent the certainty of tyranny is to restore constitutional integrity. Romney-Ryan must cast their campaign in the mold of Reagan, who simply asked, "Are you better off now than four years ago?" and they must follow it up with a bold free-enterprise plan for economic recovery. They must boost American morale, and speak plainly about Obama's failed socialist regime. They must pledge to end Obama's distorted vision of "fundamentally transforming the United States of America."  They must not "pivot toward the center," as was the case with failed "establishment Republican" presidential candidates John McCain in 2008 (we issued the same advice then), Bob Dole in 1996 and George H.W. Bush in 1992. The Republican "status quo" didn't cut it then, and it won't cut it this time. Nor will the campaign theme, "We're not Obama."

FROM OTHER COLUMNS
"On the campaign trail, Barack Obama's signature definition of 'success' is the government bailout of General Motors. 'I said I believe in American workers, I believe in this American industry, and now the American auto industry has come roaring back,' he told an audience in Pueblo, CO [recently]. 'Now I want to do the same thing with manufacturing jobs, not just in the auto industry, but in every industry.' That pronouncement should send a shiver up the spine of every American, due to an inconvenient reality: according to Forbes Magazine, GM is likely headed for bankruptcy all over again…... In this particular case, it is quite likely the president is saying exactly where he intends to take America in the next four years should he be re-elected."
                        -Arnold Ahlert

“This election is a test, not just of the opposing candidates but of the voting public. If what they want are the hard facts about where the country is, and where it is heading, they cannot vote for more of the same for the next four years."
                        -Thomas Sowell

“…..as the days run down on the Obama presidency, expect every last absurd, offensive and despicable attack to be mounted. There just isn't anything else left, and desperation is never gracious.”
                       -Hugh Hewitt

"Amid the dazzling bounty of the marketplace, it's easy to take the benefits of markets for granted. I can go to a foreign country and stick a piece of plastic in the wall, and cash will come out. I can give that same piece of plastic to a stranger who doesn't even speak my language -- and he'll rent me a car for a week. When I get home, Visa or MasterCard will send me the accounting -- correct to the penny. ... Government, by contrast, can't even count votes accurately. Yet whenever there are problems, people turn to government. ... There is nothing government can do that we cannot do better as free individuals -- and as groups of individuals working freely together. Without big government, our possibilities are limitless."
                       -John Stossel

"Floyd Corkins, a volunteer for the last six months at the D.C. Center for the LGBT Community, marched into the Family Research Center with a gun and serious ammunition, denounced FRC's policy positions and shot a security guard in the arm before being subdued. Another hate crime, but this time against, perhaps, the pre-eminent pro-family organization in America. CBS gave the story 20 seconds. NBC spent 17 seconds. Imagine a volunteer for the Family Research Council marching into some gay group's headquarters with a gun, and after shouting his opposition to the homosexual agenda, opened fire and wounded a guard before being subdued. Never mind evening news. This would be breaking news! and for days there would be seemingly endless coverage of continued conservative hatred. ... Whether it's vandalism at Chick-fil-A or rapes in Occupy Wall Street camps, these networks simply cannot find 'news' in liberal violence of any kind. ... These same media outlets pounce on allegations of conservative hatred, even when there isn't a scintilla of evidence. The Oklahoma City bombing was caused by hatred from right-wing talk radio. The Aurora, Colo., killer was a member of the tea party. So, too, was the man who shot Gabby Giffords. On and on it goes; and over and over it turns out not to be true."

GLOBALONEY
Carbon emissions in the U.S. have hit a 20-year low due to a supposedly environmentally unfriendly drilling technique that has created an abundance of cheap natural gas. The free market, it seems, does it better than the EPA. Environmentalists find themselves between shale rock and a hard place after a little noticed technical report documented how the natural gas boom caused by the use of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has actually helped the environment in a major way while also creating jobs and economic growth.

Another billion dollar taxpayer boondoggle:  Ethanol as government energy policy has been an economic and environmental bust. There’s little debate: it inflates motor fuel prices, while compromising the environment. And that was before this summer’s draught reducing corn and wheat supply.

LEFTIST WATCH
Republican delegates arriving in Tampa for the convention this week will likely find one thing more oppressive than the humidity: hordes of motley Occupiers, political puppeteers, Teamsters, Code Pink activists dressed as giant female body parts, open-borders extremists, vegan Marxists, and tattooed anarchists, all assembling for their quadrennial temper tantrum. One major target is the Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, and anything ever associated with him. Plans include a tent city called “Romneyville” and protests against any companies assisted by Romney’s old firm, Bain Capital.

An Occupy organizer admitted over the weekend that the goal of his protest group was to "overthrow the capitalist system and build communism." So the cat's out of the bag again on this bunch. Where is the outrage? The true agenda of the Occupy movement has been revealed — it's a totalitarian one. Billing itself as a spontaneous people's revolution and embraced by the media and Democrat political establishment, Occupy is really a destructive band of thugs whose goal is the violent demise of democracy.

Remember how the far left in America has said since the rise of the Tea Party that the right is awash in "violent rhetoric"? What about the proposition to kill the Boy Scouts like one would kill a rabid dog? That is what a columnist for The Atlantic has implied. James Hamblin, the magazine's health editor, proclaimed his desire to kill Boy Scouts based on his distaste for their recently re-affirmed policy of refusing to admit openly gay members.

BOOKS, FILM
Thomas Sowell:  Years, and sometimes decades, pass between my visits to movie theaters. But I drove 30 miles to see the movie “2016,” based on Dinesh D’Souza’s best-selling book, “The Roots of Obama’s Rage.” Where I live is so politically correct that such a movie would not even be mentioned, much less shown…..the movie “2016″ demonstrates how so many of Obama’s actions as President of the United States, which D’Souza had predicted on the basis of his study of Obama’s background, are perfectly consistent with that ideology, however inconsistent it is with the rhetoric that gained him the highest office in the land.

ELECTION
“There’s really only one issue in the 2012 presidential race; all the rest is trivia. That one issue is: Do you want to be in control of your life, or do you want government to control your life? If you want to keep control over your life, then do not re-elect Barack Obama to a second term in the White House. Hold tight to your liberty. If, however, you want your life defined, channeled and limited by Obama’s “we can’t wait” executive orders and the bureaucratic rules of government agencies, then Obama is your guy.”

At 10:30 on Monday night, Ann Romney is scheduled to take the stage at the Republican National Convention, in Act 1 of her husband’s four-day introduction to the nation. But tens of millions of people will not be able to watch. CBS plans instead to show a rerun of “Hawaii Five-O,”. Viewers of NBC will see a new episode of “Grimm”. And ABC plans to show “Castle,” a series about a best-selling mystery novelist who helps solve crimes. Advisers to Mitt Romney, facing a blackout of the opening-night program they fastidiously scripted to soften perceptions of the candidate, are angry.
The 63-year-old mother of five and grandmother of 18 has embraced the homemaker image that Hillary Rodham Clinton so openly scorned.

A University of Colorado analysis of state-by-state factors leading to the Electoral College selection of every U.S. president since 1980 forecasts that the 2012 winner will be Mitt Romney.  The key is the economy, say political science professors Kenneth Bickers of CU-Boulder and Michael Berry of CU Denver. Their prediction model stresses economic data from the 50 states and the District of Columbia, including both state and national unemployment figures as well as changes in real per capita income, among other factors.

While the president and his minions play smear games against the GOP, the economy is figuratively burning down…..But the president refuses to deal with that mess until after the election (by then, we’ll be well on our way to the recession). The irresponsibility is staggering.

GOOD ADVICE
"Mr. Alexander, I'm pleased to note the Patriot Team is taking a few days away. When they return, I hope they will challenge the choice of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's VP. Neither Mr. Romney nor Mr. Ryan is a conservative, and I fail to see much difference in the bottom line if they are elected or Obama remains in office. The only conservatives are those who act in agreement with the Constitution." --Disillusioned! in California

Alexander's Reply: Both these men are solid Republicans, which is not to say solid conservatives. However, if you "fail to see much difference in the bottom line" whether Romney-Ryan or Obama-Biden are elected, then that is a FAIL. If your suggestion was just hyperbole because you are disappointed that the GOP ticket is not more conservative, then OK. However, if you conclude that a Romney-Ryan ticket or an Obama-Biden ticket will make no difference to the future of Liberty, you are remarkably misinformed. Any Patriot who is sulking under the same delusion, has flatly lost touch with reality. As I noted, it is time to unify and DEFEAT Obama, not foment self-defeating disunity over the Romney-Ryan ticket."

The Washington Post's "On Faith" blog network has joined the chorus of media outlets extolling the virtues of Islam. Kathleen Duff of the Religion News Service, in an August 17 post, expressed her newfound admiration for the holy book of Islam. In a glowing piece titled “What Catholics Can Learn from the Quran,” Duff wrote: “This year during Ramadan – the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when Muslims believe the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad – I was in solidarity with my Muslim sisters and brothers throughout the world by reading the Quran……”  When “On Faith” publishes a piece titled “What Muslims Can Learn from the Bible,” this line of thought might be more plausible. But such inter-faith dialogue would not be politically correct at the Post.

THIS WEEK’S NEWS
Mitt Romney used a tough new campaign speech to personally blast the Obama campaign, saying comments earlier in the day from Vice President Biden are "what an angry and desperate presidency looks like." "Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago," Romney said while campaigning in Ohio. Romney was responding to Biden's suggestion that the GOP ticket's economic policies would “put y’all back in chains."

Over 400 independent economists signed a statement at the website Economists for Romney in support of what they call the Romneys "bold economic plan for America.", including Five Nobel laureates.  “We enthusiastically endorse Governor Mitt Romney’s economic plan to create jobs and restore economic growth while returning America to its tradition of economic freedom.”

For the first time since he began running for president, Mitt Romney has the support of over 40 percent of America's youth vote, a troubling sign for President Obama who built his 2008 victory with the overwhelming support of younger, idealistic voters.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
The Childishness of the American Left
By Steve McCann

The American left is the most self-indulgent, arrogant, and spoiled group of people on the face of the earth. They live in a nation facing national bankruptcy and societal upheaval -- a country presently subsisting on the residue of past economic achievements.  Yet the only things that matter to them are their lifestyles and imposing their self-determined superiority on rest of the American people.

The true indebtedness of the United States now exceeds $222 trillion.  Appearing on National Public Radio in August of 2011 Professor Laurence J. Kotlikoff of Boston University said: “If you add up all the promises that have been made for spending obligations, and subtract all the taxes we expect to collect, the difference is $211 Trillion.  This is the fiscal gap.  That is our true indebtedness.”

Since that interview, the indebtedness has increased by another $11 trillion.  Yet these estimates do not include the full impact of ObamaCare, which could add another $17+ trillion.  On the other side of the ledger: the annual Gross Domestic Product (the value of all economic activity in the U.S.) is $15.6 trillion.  The indebtedness to GDP ratio is a staggering 14.2 to 1 and guaranteed to further accelerate if Barack Obama is re-elected.

The United States is not facing bankruptcy, it is bankrupt.  The primary factor that has kept the nation afloat over the past four years is that the dollar, albeit temporarily, remains the world's reserve currency, thus allowing the Federal Reserve to print enormous sums of money to cover the Obama budget deficits and flood the global market with near worthless cash.  Today it requires $100.00 to purchase the same goods $10.00 purchased in 1950.

As a further comparison, the total annual GDP of all the countries on earth is $70 trillion.  The American indebtedness alone exceeds that amount by a factor of 3 -- which contributes mightily to a world drowning in debt and facing an inevitable debt crisis and financial collapse, which will trigger a massive global depression.
Currently, just 58.4% of the civilian population is employed, as compared to 64.3% twelve years ago….This failure is a byproduct of a tsunami of government regulations, mandates, and taxes which has nearly destroyed the innovation and business and job-creation that made the American economy so vibrant over the latter part of the 20th century.  That innovation has now moved overseas, along with over 7.5 million high-paying goods-producing jobs since 2000.

The reaction of the self-described progressives to this dire scenario?  Sweep the facts under the rug or ignore them completely, as it appears that the most important things in their lives are the legalization of gay marriage, free contraceptives and abortifacients, worshiping at the altar of extreme and discredited environmentalism, mocking and undermining all organized religion (except Islam), and telling the American people what they can eat, where they can live, what may be taught in their schools, how they must operate their businesses, and what health care they can access.

To the true believers on the left, re-electing Barack Obama is not a matter of what is or is not good for the country; rather, for the majority on the left, the primary motivation is geared solely toward defeating their sworn enemy: conservatives and Republicans, whom many falsely believe are a right-wing horde determined to create a theocracy and impose old-fashioned morality.  But what they fear most from the right is a determination to reinstitute unfettered individual freedom and concomitant economic growth, which would relegate the American left to the back bench of American society.

Thus, to them, what the policies of Barack Obama and his radical minions are doing to the long-term fate of nation is immaterial as long as Obama regurgitates his support for the various causes that are near and dear to the coalition that makes up the left.  There are two common threads to the belief system of American progressives: 1) an omnipotent central government controlled by them, and 2) an assumption that there is a bottomless pit of money to be siphoned from an equally bottomless pit of wealth.  But this is not the same nation that experienced unprecedented prosperity from 1946 to 2007.  It is not the same nation in which these narcissists on the left grew up, never knowing national adversity or trauma….

It is time to grow up and understand that the America that could absorb all the excessive spending, promises, and left-wing fun and games is no more.  This nation cannot survive on its present course, and if that course is not dramatically reversed, those on the left will suffer as much as if not more than the bulk of the American people they are trying to rule.  History has shown repeatedly that when an overwhelming political and social catastrophe strikes a nation, the people turn against the ruling class, often with a vengeance.  In the United States, that ruling class is presently dominated by the American left.

“An administration that constantly talks about voter disenfranchisement appears unconcerned that a study by the nonpartisan Military Voters Protection Project found that in 2008 less than 20% of 2.5 million military voters successfully voted by absentee ballot. In 2010, participation shrank to a scandalous 5%. ……the Obama administration has shown a disregard for military voters who, studies show, tend to vote Republican. ... Of course, this reluctance to promote and support military voting -- while dead voters are allowed to remain on the rolls and cast ballots, and while the right of felons to vote is championed -- has nothing to do with the fact that John McCain won 54% of the military vote in 2008 or that a May 2012 Gallup poll showed Mitt Romney pulling 58% to President Obama's paltry 34%."

"Often as not, the qualification for receiving stimulus funds is the absence of work or income--such as banks and companies that fail, solar energy companies that can't make it on their own, unemployment benefits and the like. Quite simply, government taxing people more who work and then giving more money to people who don't work is a surefire recipe for less work, less output and more unemployment. Yet the notion that additional spending is a 'stimulus' and less spending is 'austerity' is the norm just about everywhere."

"Whether it's the academic community, the media elite, stalwarts of the Democratic Party or organizations such as the NAACP, the National Council of La Raza, Green for All, the Sierra Club and the Children's Defense Fund, there is a great tolerance for the ideas of socialism -- a system that has caused more deaths and human misery than all other systems combined. Today's leftists, socialists and progressives would bristle at the suggestion that their agenda differs little from those of Nazi, Soviet and Maoist mass murderers. One does not have to be in favor of death camps or wars of conquest to be a tyrant. The only requirement is that one has to believe in the primacy of the state over individual rights."

"Liberals are always eager to ban guns, but even after the Oklahoma City bombing, you didn't hear them talk about banning fertilizer. That's probably just as well because sane people would have then been forced to point out that manure doesn't kill people; people kill people."

SO WHO IS PAUL RYAN?
Serving in Congress since 1999, Paul Ryan is a conservative Republican whose ideology was shaped early on by thinkers who extolled individualism and free markets, warned of an overweening state and promoted tax-cutting "supply-side" economics. His intellectual heroes include the economists Milton Friedman, Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek, author of "The Road to Serfdom," Ayn Rand, author of "Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead," and former New York congressman and vice presidential candidate Jack Kemp, for whom Ryan once worked.

Representative Paul D. Ryan is idolized by young conservatives in the House, who see him as a role model and a polished spokesman for their vision of America. Many Republicans come across as dour budget cutters with contempt for Democrats. Mr. Ryan shares the politics of his conservative colleagues, but appears instead as an optimist who relishes the opportunity to debate policy with Democrats

He can rouse large crowds to giddiness, ascend private jets two steps at a time, and catch a baseball with one hand, sign it, and throw it back to an adoring fan. Can Paul D. Ryan leap tall buildings in a single bound?

Democrats' nerves start to fray as Ryan fires up conservative voters

Ryan has the gift of being able to explain formidable economic issues and make them clearly understandable. He has excellent command of the facts and figures at the heart of America’s current economic peril.

Rep. Paul Ryan schools President Obama on ObamaCare in this video. The White House is known to loathe Ryan because of his performance in this debate. The breezy president who handed the details of his own signature legislation to Nancy Pelosi got schooled by a young congressman who knew what was in the bill. It was an embarrassing moment for the thin-skinned president and he hasn’t forgotten it. Paul Ryan is capable of destroying his opponents in a debate without ever coming across as unpleasant. Watch him wreck DNC Chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in March 2010.

“I admit to some surprise. Presumably Mitt Romney doesn’t think that the Milwaukee suburbs are the key to the White House, or the Eagle Scout demographic will swing the election. So the only explanation is that Romney wants the most competent ticket possible. When was the last time we had a national ticket with this much mathematical skill, or knowledge of finance? Probably never. So Romney wants to contrast the serious guys who are out to save the country with the buffoonish and dishonest political hacks, Obama and Biden. Well, the contrast is real.”

In choosing Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate Saturday, Mitt Romney tapped someone who has the power to energize the Republican Party’s base – and the Democratic Party’s, too. The presence on the GOP ticket of Ryan, whose plan to cut taxes, reduce spending and revamp Medicare is regarded as a Republican Party road map, ensures that two very different visions of the role of the federal government in America will be front and center in this fall’s presidential campaign.

Michael Gerson:  “Some headlines announcing the Paul Ryan vice-presidential pick have pronounced him a “tea party favorite” — shorthand that misunderstands both Ryan and the tea party. In the past, I’ve drawn a distinction between Rejectionist Conservatism and Reform Conservatism. The Rejectionists — including tea party activists and libertarians — generally want to undo the modern state on the shortest possible timeline. The Club for Growth and a number of tea party-allied politicians opposed the Ryan budget because it does not balance within 10 years or abolish whole departments of government.  Ryan is the undisputed leader of Reform Conservatism, which seeks to modernize the federal government instead of abolishing it. Ryan argues that public-sector inefficiency is a long-term threat to the social safety net — that rising health costs in particular will make unreformed entitlement programs unsustainable while imposing a burden that will consume every other purpose of government. Ryan’s vision of entitlement reform is more politically realistic than the symbolic purity of the tea party — but also more threatening to liberalism, precisely because it is politically realistic. Ryan’s critics will attempt to make him out as the second coming of Michele Bachmann. In fact, they fear him more, because he is infinitely more serious. He represents not the inchoate frustration and nostalgia of the tea party but a developed, thoroughly modern conservative approach to governing. Who would have thought that Mitt Romney would fully embrace this bold ideological alternative? Now that he has, the stakes of the election rise significantly. A Romney win would not only be the victory of a pragmatic problem-solver. It would be the triumph of a comprehensive conservative substitute for modern liberalism, at least when it comes to entitlements. That increases Romney’s political degree of difficulty, increases the intensity of his liberal opposition — and gives his candidacy an unexpected historical significance.”

ELECTION
Mitt Romney finally caught up with the rest of us via a fiery speech in Ohio on Tuesday where he proclaimed three simple truths that frame Barack Obama: "Intellectually exhausted, out of ideas, and out of energy." Those lines are still too charitable; Obama has been intellectually barren from the beginning.  Yet it is irrefutable… that Obama's idea inventory consists of the expired date-stamped perishables of the collectivist state -- tax, confiscate, redistribute, and impoverish.

“In the first week since Paul Ryan joined Mitt Romney on the Republican ticket, something subtle yet fundamental has happened to the country--something not yet reflected in poll numbers or punditry: the mantle of leadership has shifted.”

Charles Krauthammer: I think the Democrats are discovering that they stepped on a land mine with Medicare. The fact is that Medicare was raided for Obamacare and here's why.

Rudy Guiliani:  I think the vice president of the United States has become a laugh line on late night television. I mean, he — I’ve never seen a vice president that has made as many mistakes, said as many stupid things. I mean, there’s a real fear if, God forbid, he ever had to be entrusted with the presidency, whether he really has the mental capacity to handle it.”

THIS WEEK’S NEWS
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate.

Ryan was Human Events’ 2011 Conservative of the Year. “Paul Ryan’s selection electrifies GOP grassroots”
“Paul Ryan gets it. "America is more than just a place…America is an idea. It's the only country founded on an idea. Our rights come from nature and God, not from government…..That's who we are. That's how we built this country. That's what made us great. That's our founding. We promise equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. And this idea was founded on the principles of liberty, freedom, free enterprise, self-determination, and government by consent of the governed."
“Mitt Romney did something that a lot of supposed wise men said he wouldn’t — pick a vice presidential candidate who is more charismatic than he.”

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows Mitt Romney attracting support from 47% of voters nationwide, while President Obama earns the vote from 43%.

All three evening newscasts on Wednesday continued to ignore the ad by top Obama supporters that accuses Mitt Romney of, essentially, killing a woman. At the same time, CBS and NBC amplified the Obama administration's "war on women" talking point, playing up attacks from Sandra Fluke, who previously tangled with Rush Limbaugh over contraception.

Once again, a bad jobs report comes out, and both the White House and the media trumpet it as "good" news and a sign the economy's turning around. It is in fact a dismal jobs report, as the numbers clearly show.

Labor unions plan to send out more than 300,000 volunteers later this month to canvass voters to support President Obama’s re-election.

The Sunday news shows featured a rare spectacle that at once revealed the decline of civility in Washington and the depth of GOP outrage over Harry Reid’s unproven claim that Mitt Romney didn’t pay income taxes for an entire decade: two of the nation’s top GOP officials flat out called the Senate majority leader a liar. That’s no ordinary criticism in official Washington.
Harry Reid deflected questions Monday about releasing his own tax returns, even as he continued to pound the demand for Mitt Romney to make more of his own public.
Rush Limbaugh:  "Here's a question for Dingy Harry. As majority leader he is paid $193,000 a year. How did he get to be worth $10 million?"

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Investor’s Business Daily 8/8

Unable to run on his record, President Hope-and-Change has built a campaign based entirely on scurrilous lies about Mitt Romney. But the latest reaches a historic, despicable low. That ad features a man claiming that after Bain Capital closed his steel plant, he lost his job and his insurance, and shortly thereafter his wife died of cancer.

Even it were true, trying to blame Romney for his wife's death defies credulity. But the facts are all wrong. Romney had left Bain to run the summer Olympics two years before Joe Soptic lost his job in 2001. And his wife had her own job and insurance at that time. She later took a disability leave and lost her coverage, and her cancer was apparently symptom-free until she checked into a hospital for pneumonia in 2006.

The ad, sponsored by an Obama "super-PAC" was too much even for the in-the-Obama-tank press. CNN's Wolf Blitzer called it "a pretty outrageous claim," and Sam Stein of the Obama-worshipping Huffington Post said it went "too far." The Obama campaign has refused to denounce the ad, which is understandable, since when you lie as often as it does, the lines of propriety start to get blurry.

The campaign continues to hammer Romney as an "outsourcer," though the only examples they can cite took place after he left Bain, and even though the independent FactCheck.org reported the claim was bogus. Obama campaign officials at one point called Romney a felon, saying he misrepresented his position at Bain after 1999. And Obama continued to make thinly veiled suggestions along these lines after the charge was completely debunked.

Team Obama has also repeatedly accused Romney of opposing abortion "even in the case of rape and incest." Fact-checking site PolitiFact.com gave this a "pants on fire," but the ads continued. Harry Reid, meanwhile, has been happily carrying the Obama campaign's bilge water by claiming that Romney is a tax cheat who didn't pay any taxes for years, based on no evidence whatsoever.

And now Obama is running around falsely claiming that Romney's tax cut plan will raise taxes on the middle class, citing an "independent" study written by a former administration official.

But why should Obama stop the lies? The press won't call him on it, at least not with the vigor they reserve for any misleading claim made by a Republican. And, if the latest round of polls is accurate, the mud-slinging seems to be driving down Romney's approval numbers. Plus, all these false charges keep the focus on Romney, and off Obama's dreadful record as president.

This campaign of outrageous lies has exposed Obama for what he truly is: an utterly shameless politician who will do or say anything to keep his job.

FROM OTHER COLUMNS
“An administration that constantly talks about voter disenfranchisement appears unconcerned that a study by the nonpartisan Military Voters Protection Project found that in 2008 less than 20% of 2.5 million military voters successfully voted by absentee ballot. In 2010, participation shrank to a scandalous 5%. ...the Obama administration has shown a disregard for military voters who, studies show, tend to vote Republican.

                        -economist Arthur Laffer

                       -Walter E. Williams

"Liberals are always eager to ban guns, but even after the Oklahoma City bombing, you didn't hear them talk about banning fertilizer. That's probably just as well because sane people would have then been forced to point out that manure doesn't kill people; people kill people. One of the creepy things about liberals is that they only wish to discuss actions and inevitable consequences when the actions can be traced to conservatives. You never hear them reprimand parole boards, which are nearly always comprised of social workers, psychologists and other college degreed morons, when one of the felons they release murders or rapes another victim. You never hear liberals blaming people like Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Ted Kennedy and Barack Obama, for bringing on the financial meltdown by insisting that home loans be given to people who couldn't come up with a down payment, all because they knew that the votes of those new homeowners could be so easily bought and paid for with the tax dollars of the solvent."

Uber-liberal MoveOn.org is casting an uproariously funny and deeply insightful PSA, but — according to the URGENT notice placed today on NYCastings.com — the noble liberals at MoveOn are accepting submissions from only nonunion talent. Because, you know, if they used union talent, they’d have to pay union wages.

Socialist President Hollande of France is vowing to impose a 75 percent tax on the portion of anyone’s income above a million euros ($1.24 million) a year. “Should I be preparing to leave the country?” the executive asked Mr. Grandil. “We’re getting a lot of calls from high earners who are asking whether they should get out of France,” said Mr. Grandil, a partner at Altexis, which specializes in tax matters for corporations and the wealthy. “Even young, dynamic people pulling in 200,000 euros are wondering whether to remain in a country where making money is not considered a good thing.”

“When Mitt Romney arrived in Jerusalem and suggested that Israel’s success contrasted with its Muslim neighbors was due to a culture of success, he was waving a red flag in front of a red bull. Romney’s comments were as provocative to the left as Obama’s “You didn’t build that” remark was to us. To the left, success has become the Mark of Cain. Where success once used to be proof of good character, the balance has shifted and it is now proof of bad character. The left blames all disparities on injustice.”

Taking the silly “War on Women” rhetoric to another disgusting level, the pro-abortion feminists at CodePink have come up with a new campaign: Sending snapshots of their vaginas to the RNC Convention in Tampa, Upset that Republicans support religious freedom for groups opposing the Obamacare mandate and want to end taxpayer funding for the Planned Parenthood abortion business, CodePink thinks it has a great idea on how to respond.

ELECTION
Priorities USA released a new ad that will surely rank among the ugliest and most dishonest in the history of political campaigns. Titled "Understands" the ad features Joe Soptic describing how Mitt Romney is responsible for his wife's death from lung cancer. It's Lyndon Johnson's Daisy ad made more personal and therefore even more vile.
The ad has blown up in the Obama campaign's face after blatant deceptions were revealed in the story….
Oops? President Barack Obama's re-election campaign washed its hands Wednesday of the ad. “Soptic later told CNN that his wife had health insurance through her own employer from that point to 2002 or 2003, when she left that job because of an injury—a detail that undermines the ad's heartbreaking narrative.”
It is hard to think of an attack ad lower than the one essentially blaming Mitt Romney for a woman’s death, but we may have just found one. It’s from Florida, and it depicts Allen West (R-FL) in a boxing ring with red gloves on.  The cartoon-like video then shows West punching an old woman, a young lady and seemingly a family with children.  He also steals cash from the hands of the family and pockets it, all while laughing like a gremlin.

President Obama spent his formative years in academia, so he's no doubt familiar with postmodernism, the literary theory that rejects objective reality and insists instead that everything is a matter of interpretation and relative "truth." At any rate he's running the first postmodern Presidential campaign, now organized almost exclusively around allegations about his opponent that bear no relation to the observable universe. The most important document of this new approach to politics may be this week's now famous TV commercial in which a man on camera accuses Mitt Romney of killing his wife. (The man's late wife, not Ann.)

Just when you thought the Obama campaign couldn’t get any weirder, along comes its latest high-tech gift. Meet the Obama for America app for iPhone, a tool that allows you to spy on your neighbors to determine which of them are naughty (read: not Obama supporters) and which are nice. What you do with that information is entirely up to you. The website ProPublica explains how the app works. The end-user types in his current location. The app returns a Google map of the area that flags households with one or more registered Democrats.

Accurate enough that I was awarded my own star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars. And I smell something rotten in Denmark. Obama has a big skeleton in his closet. It’s his college records. Call it “gut instinct” but my gut is almost always right. Obama has a secret hidden at Columbia- and it’s a bad one that threatens to bring down his presidency.……Here’s my gut belief: Obama got a leg up by being admitted to both Occidental and Columbia as a foreign exchange student. He was raised as a young boy in Indonesia. But did his mother ever change him back to a U.S. citizen? When he returned to live with his grandparents in Hawaii or as he neared college-age preparing to apply to schools, did he ever change his citizenship back? I’m betting not.
If you could unseal Obama’s Columbia University records I believe you’d find that:
A)He rarely ever attended class.
B)His grades were not those typical of what we understand it takes to get into Harvard Law School.
C)He attended Columbia as a foreign exchange student.
D)He paid little for either undergraduate college or Harvard Law School because of foreign aid and scholarships given to a poor foreign students like this kid Barry Soetoro from Indonesia.
If you think I’m “fishing” then prove me wrong. Open up your records Mr. President. What are you afraid of?

For decades after World War II, people have hunted down and sought punishment for Nazi murderers, who were responsible for the deaths of more than 20 million people. Here's my question: Why are the horrors of Nazism so well-known and widely condemned, but not those of socialism and communism? What goes untaught — and possibly is covered up — is that socialist and communist ideas have produced the greatest evil in mankind's history.”
