THIS WEEK’S NEWS
Attorney General Eric Holder signed off on a controversial search warrant that identified Fox News reporter James Rosen as a “possible co-conspirator” in violations of the Espionage Act and authorized seizure of his private emails.
The US Attorney for the District of Columbia, the man who carried out the aggressive surveillance and phone record scrutiny at Fox News - is also a big donor to the Obama Campaigns.
Now Holder will investigate himself to see if he did anything improper:

Youth gang riots in the Swedish capital have entered the fifth straight night. Hundreds of mostly immigrant teenagers tore through the suburbs, smashing windows and burning cars in the country’s worst outbreak of violence in years.  “For years, Sweden – one of Europe’s most tranquil countries, famous for its attractive immigration policies and generous welfare system – has been accepting an influx of immigrants, which now make up about 15 per cent of its population. These migrants have failed to integrate into Swedish society, and are only in the country to enjoy the country’s social benefits system”

On “Fox News Sunday”, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.  Pfieffer said it was “irrelevant.”

Not only do voters trust Republicans more now, they have their highest level of confidence in the GOP and the lowest level in Democrats in seven months.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Thomas Sowell  5/8

If there is ever a contest for words that substitute for thought, "diversity" should be recognized as the undisputed world champion.  You don't need a speck of evidence, or a single step of logic, when you rhapsodize about the supposed benefits of diversity. The very idea of testing this wonderful, magical word against something as ugly as reality seems almost sordid.

To ask whether institutions that promote diversity 24/7 end up with better or worse relations between the races than institutions that pay no attention to it is only to get yourself regarded as a bad person. To cite hard evidence that places obsessed with diversity have worse race relations is to risk getting yourself labeled an incorrigible racist. Free thinking is not free.

The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that the government has a "compelling interest" in promoting diversity -- apparently more compelling than the 14th Amendment's requirement of "equal protection" of the law for everybody.

How does a racially homogeneous country like Japan manage to have high quality education, without the essential ingredient of diversity, for which there is supposedly a "compelling" need? Conversely, why does India, one of the most diverse nations on Earth, have a record of intergroup intolerance and lethal violence today that is worse than that in the days of our Jim Crow South? Even to ask such questions is to provoke charges of unworthy tactics, and motives too low to be dignified with an answer. Not that the true believers in diversity could answer anyway.

Among the candidates for runner-up to "diversity" as the top word for making thought obsolete is "fair."
Apparently everyone is entitled to a "fair share" of a society's prosperity, whether they worked 16-hour days to help create that prosperity or did nothing more than live off the taxpayers or depend on begging or crime to bring in a few bucks. Apparently we owe them something just for gracing us with their presence, even if we feel that we could do without them quite well.

At the other end of the income scale, the rich are supposed to pay their "fair share" of taxes. But at neither end of the income scale is a "fair share" defined as a particular number or proportion, or in any other concrete way. It is just a political synonym for "more," dressed up in moralistic-sounding rhetoric. What "fair" really means is more arbitrary power for government.

Another word that shuts down thought is "access." People who fail to meet the standards for anything from college admission to a mortgage loan are often said to have been denied "access" or opportunity. But equal access or equal opportunity is not the same as equal probability of success. Republicans are not denied an equal opportunity to vote in California, even though the chances of a Republican candidate actually getting elected in California are far less than the chances of a Democrat getting elected.

By the same token, if everyone is allowed to apply for college admission, or for a mortgage loan, and their applications are all judged by the same standards, then they have equal opportunity, even if the village idiot has a lower probability of getting into the Ivy League, and someone with a bad credit history is less likely to be lent money.

"Affordable" is another popular word that serves as a substitute for thought. To say that everyone is entitled to "affordable housing" is very different from saying that everyone should decide what kind of housing he or she can afford. Government programs to promote "affordable housing" are programs to allow some people to decide what housing they want and force other people -- taxpayers, landlords or whatever -- to absorb a share of the cost of a decision that they had no voice in making.  More generally, making various things "affordable" in no way increases the amount of wealth in a society above what it would be when prices are "prohibitively expensive." On the contrary, price controls reduce incentives to produce.

None of this is rocket science. But if you don't stop and think, it doesn't matter whether you are a genius or a moron. Words that stop people from thinking reduce even smart people to the same level as morons

"[T]he left suggests that only greater government can fix the issues that trouble Americans. That's because, according to the left, one grand, unifying problem underlies all the other problems: Americans are nasty. Some Americans are poor because other Americans are greedy. Minorities are disproportionately poor because white Americans are racist. Women are trapped in socioeconomic oblivion because male Americans are sexist. America is not a melting pot. America is a hell pit designed to consume its non-white, female, non-Christian inhabitants. How then can the patriarchal, xenophobic majority be defeated? Only with a coalition of victims. ... The true American experience, according to Obama ... is marginalization. And marginalization justifies massive government interventionism to foster e pluribus unum."

CONSERVATIVE STRATEGY
That seeming inability to quickly connect moments of national outrage with meaningful legislation on the part of Republicans will be on display in the weeks, months and perhaps years ahead as it struggles to figure out how to channel the national rage that is building over the revelations about the IRS's insidious effort to single out conservative groups for increased scrutiny.        As anger against the current tax system grows, the Democrats' only hope to avoid such a debacle will be to rely on the GOP's historic inability to capitalize on moments of national anger and outrage and channel it into the legislative process. Perhaps it’s no surprise that the party that loathes government doesn't understand how to harness its power. If they ever become adept at legislating as their Democratic counterparts across the aisle are, the IRS may be in for the greatest defensive battle in its hundred year history……..“Does the GOP understand IRS scandal opportunity?  If the Republicans could unify around anti-IRS message, the results could be a national landslide.”

Any scandal investigation that expects a "Eureka!" moment, a White House e-mail, or Oval Office smoking gun will be misguided. In fact, the dots are already connected directly to the president. Barack Obama is not foolish enough to have a tape recording system hidden in his desk. And his administration staff are not careless enough to send one another incriminating e-mails……we can be sure the communications were all sotto voce and in persona, like any good Chicago political operator. But….Obama's 2008 campaign was demanding the Justice Department criminally prosecute conservative groups with 501(c)4 tax-exempt status. Then, last year, President Obama's re-election campaign "targeted private citizens who had donated to Romney groups."

They're surrounded by legal and employment protections, they know how to parse a careful response, they know how to blur the essential point of a question in a blizzard of unconnected factoids. They came across as people arrogant enough to target Americans for abuse and harassment and think they'd get away with it.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Michael Graham  5/17
Has President Nixon been replaced by Sergeant Schultz? The “Smartest President Ever” has disappeared. The Barack Brain Trust long-touted by liberals is gone — replaced by hacks whose rallying cry is straight from Stalag 13—“I know nothing. Nothing!”

The top law enforcement agency in the land spied on the top news-gathering organization, secretly seizing phone records from their home and cell phones. They did so without the legally required notice to the Associated Press. And what did Attorney General Eric Holder say when asked why his Department of Justice would do such a thing? “I do not know why that was or was not done,” the attorney general told the House Judiciary Committee Wednesday. “I simply don’t have a factual basis to answer that question.” Notice his answer isn’t just “I don’t know why we didn’t notify the AP as required by law.” It’s “I don’t know whether we did or not.”

This isn’t Attorney Stephen J. Shmuck of Dewey, Cheatem & Howe. This is the attorney general of the United States, whose agency has just been caught conducting a potentially illegal surveillance dragnet against 100 reporters and editors. And he knows nothing about it? Folks, your attorney general knows nothing about everything:

At one point, when asked who authorized the AP spying, he actually said “I can’t say as a matter of fact I would probably 95 percent, 99 percent certain the deputy attorney general acting in my stead was the one who authorizes the subpoena.” A staffer finally brought him a note confirming it was the deputy AG.

Holder told Congress the White House found out about the Obama administration’s surveillance when they “read it in the paper.” He said he wasn’t involved because “I recused myself.” When asked when he recused himself: “I am not sure.”

And thus the Obama defense is laid bare: “We’re not corrupt — we’re just really, really stupid!”

How did U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice end up with carefully whitewashed talking points regarding Benghazi? Who knows? Except that the email trail “directly contradict claims by White House press secretary Jay Carney and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the revisions of those talking points were driven by the intelligence community and show heavy input from top Obama administration officials,” Stephen Hayes reports in The Weekly Standard.

Hillary Clinton testified that she was a hands-on part of the State Department’s response to the Benghazi attacks. So who stripped the talking points of their facts? She has no idea. And why was Rice — who had nothing to do with Benghazi — picked to hit the Sunday TV show circuit and spread the bogus “it was a videotape!” story in the first place? Your guess is as good as Obama’s.

What we do know is that the final talking-points product — that Carney assures us came directly from the CIA and no one else! — was so devoid of facts that then-CIA director David Petraus said, “Frankly, I’d just as soon not use this.” So why did the White House use it? Nobody knows!

After a week of shoulder-shrugging “whatevers” regarding the IRS scandal, Obama now tells us he’s mad as heck and not going to take it anymore when it comes to targeting people based on politics. He claims he found out about his administration’s IRS abuses by reading it in the papers, too (Note to self: Make sure White House newspaper subscriptions stay paid in full!) But this story has been around for at least two years. Congress held hearings featuring members of the Obama administration. According to media reports, people inside the White House were aware of the practice at least a year ago.

Forget “we’re smarter than you.” The new White House motto is: “Dumb — It’s the New Hotness!”

It happens about once a month here, on the barren foothills of one of America´s green-energy boomtowns: A soaring golden eagle slams into a wind farm´s spinning turbine and falls, mangled and lifeless, to the ground. Killing these iconic birds is not just an irreplaceable loss for a vulnerable species. It´s also a federal crime, a charge that the Obama administration has used to prosecute oil companies when birds drown in their waste pits, and power companies when birds are electrocuted by their power lines. Benghazi Reveals the Heart of Progressivism

As a metaphor for big government, it is hard to top the Justice Department’s seizing of journalists’ phone records from The Associated Press. Unless, of course, you think the best example is the Internal Revenue Service turning the screws on groups it viewed as conservative and, therefore, unworthy of fair treatment. Or maybe the winner is the sneaky spreading of ObamaCare’s tentacles, with insurance companies now predicting the law will drive up the cost of individual premiums by as much as 400 percent. There are no losers in this race to the bottom — except the American people. It is tempting

No contemporary American politician has benefited more from the power of good storytelling than Barack Obama. He vaulted from obscurity to the presidency on the power of narrative – invoking his biography and personal values to make a larger point about how he would lead the nation. So presumably no one understands more vividly than Obama and his close aides just how toxic and potentially paralyzing his situation has become this spring, as four distinct ethical and policy controversies have simultaneously converged.
