Brent Bozell: Last Chance for the GOP

Back in ‘92, the late Paul Weyrich and I held a press conference during the Republican National Convention to make two announcements.

First, we were endorsing George Bush 41’s re-election. Second, we’d just made the most meaningless endorsement in history. He had so thoroughly bungled his first term that there was nothing to be done to save him. And we were right.

The Republicans are now facing the same future in November. At this point they will certainly lose the House and quite possibly the Senate too. Worse, they’ve so botched their opportunity that only they can save themselves now. The $1.3 trillion Omnibus Bill — their omnibus bill — was not just the most reckless spending bill in history, it was an abject surrender on every single political and policy pledge made to those who put them in office, save helping the military.
It’s been this way from the start. First, they asked for control of the House and its appropriations authority to right the fiscal ship, and as importantly, end Obamacare. In 2010, they got it — and immediately stated they could do nothing without the Senate. In 2014, they were awarded that too — and just as quickly declared they could do nothing without the White House. So, in 2016 they were handed that, and with it complete control of the legislative process, but now with no more excuses available.

And what have they done? They surrendered without a fight. Any real advance, be it Gorsuch, regulatory relief, minimal border security, minimal tax cuts, or minimal changes in Obamacare — it’s all being driven by the White House. Congress has done nothing.

Here’s the difference between the two parties. For the past eight years, the GOP has been the party that begins each conversation with, “This is why we can’t do it.” The Democrats begin theirs with, “This is how we’ll get it done.” The crisis for Republicans is so grave that not even a rhetorical shift will save them. Only action, concrete action, might — might. They must come up with victories. Here’s what they need to do, in six easy steps.

Like it or not, wrap themselves around the president to save him from impeachment. This means publicly embracing him as their leader. More to the point, it means supporting everything he puts on the table from here through November, and doing it with brio.

Reverse that disastrous $1.3 trillion omnibus. This talk about a revision, or worse, a balanced budget amendment is the height of hypocrisy and the public’s not going to stand for it. It’s like committing rape and then joining the #metoo movement. Only tangible results, legislation that reduces the deficit and puts the government on the road to fiscal sanity, will work.

Kill Obamacare. Nothing less will do. The public that voted these Republicans in has had it with excuses and half-measures.

End funding of Planned Parenthood. The pro-life movement is leaving the GOP, and for good reason. When Republicans award the operation that proudly massacres over 300,000 babies annually with $450,000,000 dollars taken from American taxpayers, there’s no difference between the parties.

Fund border security. The base will not stomach any more of the GOP’s public displays of affection for Chuck Schumer while denying funds for Trump’s border wall. Promises made, promises broken.

Deliver real personal tax cuts. What they came up with last year rewarded Big Business nicely while excusing nearly 50% of Americans from the responsibility of paying taxes altogether. Everyone else was given bread crumbs — or screwed. Those were your voters, GOP.

Here is the bottom line. On September 30, five weeks before the election, there will be the need for a new spending bill to keep the government running. Everything listed above can be accomplished in that one piece of legislation. No more excuses. No more punts. No more stalling.

It’s so obvious, really. At this point the GOP faithful are set to make a devastating declaration in seven months: “We gave you complete control, and you not only accomplished nothing, you broke your word on virtually everything. Good-bye.”

And you know what, Republicans? They’re right.  Your call.

Important read by Victor Davis Hansen:  “Indeed, the aim of the so-called Resistance to Donald J. Trump is ending Trump’s presidency by any means necessary before the 2020 election. Or, barring that, it seeks to so delegitimize him that he becomes presidentially impotent….First came the failed lawsuits after the election alleging voting-machine tampering. Then there was the doomed celebrity effort to convince some state electors not to follow their constitutional duty and to deny Trump the presidency — a gambit that, had it worked, would have wrecked the Constitution. Then came the pathetic congressional boycott of the inauguration and the shrill nationwide protests…Anti- and Never-Trump op-ed writers have long ago run out of superlatives. Trump is the worst, most, biggest — fill in the blank — in the history of the presidency, in the history of the world, worse even than Mao, Mussolini, Stalin, or Hitler. Next was the sad effort to introduce articles of impeachment. After that came weird attempts to cite Trump for violations of the emoluments clause of the Constitution. That puerile con was followed by plans to declare him deranged and mentally unfit so that he could be removed under the 25th Amendment. From time to time, Obama holdovers in the DOJ, National Security Council, and FBI sought to leak information, or they refused to carry out presidential orders. As the Resistance goes from one ploy to the next, it ignores its string of failed prior efforts, forgetting everything and learning nothing. State nullification is no longer neo-Confederate but an any-means-necessary progressive tool. Suing the government weekly is proof of revolutionary fides, not a waste of California’s taxpayer dollars….”

Imagine the frustration building in elite media offices across the country.

Lately, the members of the elite media have been relentlessly bashing President Trump. The reality they have been promoting has been one in which the White House staff is in chaos; a hardline, supposedly dangerous right-wing hawk has been nominated to be national security adviser; and some of the most important news of the day centers around a woman with a lurid tale from more than a decade ago.

Meanwhile, deeply nostalgic TV personalities, who have been nurtured on the true faith of demonstration liberalism, have been fondly describing how anti-gun protests are bringing back memories of the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements.

In weaving together this false narrative, members of the elite media are collectively building an effort to uplift left-wing values and diminish the achievements of conservative leadership – specifically the Trump administration. However, after all this effort, President Trump’s approval rating has increased.

Whoever thought up the stunt of gathering more than 1,000 Central Americans in a caravan to travel across a complicit Mexico toward the U.S. border had no idea of the opportunity they were giving President Trump.

A recent CNN poll found that job approval for President Trump increased from 35 percent in February to 42 percent in March. The result was so shocking that CNN commentator Chris Cillizza, who is normally deeply anti-Trump, had to spend time analyzing the voter blocs in which “Trump performed significantly better in March than he did in February.”

In the CNN poll, President Trump saw big gains with men (8 points), young voters (8 points), middle-aged voters (9 points), and college graduates (10 points). Cillizza called the increases among younger and college educated voters “intriguing,” and said they were “most likely” due to the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

The Trump Approval Index History, published by Rasmussen Reports, has consistently showed the president’s approval in the 40s – even hitting 50 percent on Monday. Importantly, the Rasmussen Reports Daily Presidential Tracking Poll shows that while President Trump’s average monthly job approval rating has dropped from February to March, his daily rating has been mostly at or above President Obama’s 2010 rating since early February.

How could this be happening? How could a month of unending anti-Trump media lead to his gaining ground? Rasmussen again had a big part of the answer.

A recent Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 52 percent of likely American voters believe most of the news media are against Trump’s agenda, while only 5 percent thought reporters are in support of Trump’s agenda. The elite media’s intense and pervasive hostility has begun to vaccinate the American people against its opposition to President Trump.

At the same time, the Trump presidency has a lot of good things going for it. The Republican tax cuts are working. People are getting bonuses and pay raises, and they are seeing companies beginning to reinvest in America. The president’s strong actions against Russia after the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in London pretty well knocked down any assertion that President Trump is unwaveringly pro-Putin. More and more foreign leaders are coming to the White House because President Trump is being recognized and acting as a world leader, despite the elite media’s effort to undermine him.

President Trump’s decision to talk with North Korea strikes most Americans as a welcome alternative to fighting another war on the peninsula. With Mike Pompeo and John Bolton nominated as secretary of state and national security adviser, respectively, it is hard to argue the Trump administration will go soft or be deceived by the North Koreans during the discussions. As Winston Churchill once said: “Meeting jaw to jaw is better than war.”

Finally, the president’s opponents keep helping him. Whoever thought up the stunt of gathering more than 1,000 Central Americans in a caravan to travel across a complicit Mexico toward the U.S. border had no idea of the opportunity they were giving President Trump. If we ever needed to demonstrate the case for a strong border wall, this supposed Central American invasion of our southern border will convince most Americans.

This may all change, but for the moment, President Trump is winning and the elite media is not.

For that reason, it is worthwhile to delve a little deeper into the issue than what is normally provided by what is claimed by transgender people themselves.”

Pretty much sums it up.

The grassroots voters that fueled the extraordinary rise of House Speaker Paul Ryan spurned their erstwhile conservative hero for a new champion, President Trump, marking a generational shift in ownership and attitude of the Republican Party. A change in the philosophical predilections of the GOP has been blamed for this slow-rolling divorce, made official with Ryan’s announcement that he would step down as speaker and retire from Congress at year’s end after more than two decades in Washington. But irreconcilable ideological differences had little to do with it.
