Exactly two years after President Obama's bid for gun control following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting died in Congress, a new poll has discovered a huge shift in public opinion to backing Second Amendment gun rights and away from controlling gun ownership. The reason: Americans now believe having a gun is the best way to protect against crime, 63 percent to 30 percent.

The VA sends veterans’ personal medical and financial information directly to the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which can seize their guns in home raids, if they are thought to be “dangerous.”

President Ronald Reagan is one of the most famous Americans of the 20th century. Michael Goodwin  4/24/15
A passage from Ernest  Hemingway fits the moment. In “The Sun Also  Rises,” one character asks,  “How did you go bankrupt?” and another responds: “Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.” The exchange captures Hillary Clinton’s red alert. She’s been going politically bankrupt for a long time, and now faces the prospect of sudden collapse. If she’s got a winning defense, she better be quick about it. The ghosts of scandals past are gaining on her and time is not on her side.

The compelling claims that she and Bill Clinton sold favors while she was secretary of state for tens of millions of dollars for themselves and their foundation don’t need to meet the legal standard for bribery. She’s on political trial in a country where Clinton Fatigue alone could be a fatal verdict. After 25 years of corner-cutting and dishonest behavior, accumulation is her enemy. Each day threatens to deliver the straw that breaks the camel’s back. It may already have happened and we’re just waiting for public opinion to catch up to the facts.
Meanwhile, her Houdini skills are being tested big time.

Hillary’s one big advantage is obvious — she’s the only serious contender for the Democratic nomination, and she beats most GOP opponents in head-to-head matchups. But everything else weighs against her, including momentum. Start with the fact that the sizzling reports of corrupt deals are coming from major news organizations that reliably tilt left. With supposed friends making the case against her, the tired Clinton defense that the attacks are partisan hit jobs has been demolished.

And after digging up so much dirt, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Politico, Reuters, Bloomberg News and others are not likely to be content with stonewalling and half-truths, especially given her recent lies about missing e-mails. No wonder the Times editorial page called on her to provide “straightforward answers” to the accusations.

I don’t see how she can meet that test. The outlines of cozy relationships and key transactions are not in dispute. The only issue is whether the millions the Clintons got amount to a quid pro quo. On the face of it, that’s certainly what they look like. There are several deals we know of, and more could emerge, that put money in the Clintons’ pockets while helping businesses, including some loathsome international figures, make a killing. It is preposterous to argue that it’s all a coincidence.

Her position was further undercut when the family foundation announced it would refile five years of tax returns. In one three-year period, it omitted tens of millions in foreign contributions, reporting “zero” to the IRS. In another two-year period, it admitted to overreporting government grants by more than $100 million. A foundation aide described the errors as “typographical,” which is bizarre — and par for the Clinton course. To concede the errors during the firestorm must mean keeping them quiet was an even greater liability.

Sooner rather than later, Hillary will have to meet the press — but what can she possibly say to alter the story lines? If history is a guide, she’ll insist she did nothing wrong, offer ambiguous answers to specific questions, take offense at persistent reporters and end by playing the victim. She’ll follow up with a fund-raising pitch for money to keep “fighting for everyday Americans.”

To imagine that scenario is to realize it won’t fly, but I’m not sure what other options she has. She can’t tell the truth. It will sink her. Nor can she credibly demand to be trusted, given her past. A recent Quinnipiac poll finds 54 percent of Americans already say Clinton is not honest or trustworthy.

Swing-state surveys show similar lopsided findings and each new sordid revelation will deepen the trust deficit. At this point in her life, it would take a near-miracle to change people’s basic view of her. Her best hope is that a missing ingredient remains missing — a Democrat who could take the nomination from her, the way Barack Obama did in 2008. None of those already in the race or committed to it — Martin O’Malley, Bernie Sanders, even Joe Biden — comes close to measuring up.

The only possible rival who does is Elizabeth Warren, the fire-breathing senator from Massachusetts. Gender aside, she is everything Hillary isn’t — an anti-Wall Street conviction populist with a record to match her rhetoric. A movement to draft her started before Hillary hit the fan, so Warren would begin with a built-in constituency. So far, though, she insists she’s not running. Then again, that also could change suddenly.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURED COLUMN
Obama as Nuclear Arsonist
By James Lewis

Obama is the most dangerous president in history.  He lied when promising the world that the U.S. would never allow Iran’s war fanatics to have nuclear weapons.  While Obama was demagogically repeating, “Never! Never!,” his alter ego Val Jarrett carried on secret talks with the mullahs, resulting in today’s total surrender. Today we have a fuzzy “framework” (that Iran denies even agreeing to), which gives the world thirteen years before the mullahs can set off Armageddon.  After thirteen years, all bets are off, assuming the enemy doesn’t violate its “promises” tomorrow, which it has a long history of doing. This is not sane.

Dick Cheney has correctly called Obama “the worst president in history.” I think history will brand him with that flaming scarlet letter, because no U.S. leader has ever empowered a nuclear suicide cult.  No U.S. president before this one could even imagine doing something so monstrous.  Obama has gone rogue.

My guess is therefore that Saudi Arabia will be the first big target for Iranian assault.  The Iranians have already taken over the strategic country of Yemen, encircling Saudi Arabia from the south.  They also threaten Arabia from their side of the narrow Gulf, and they have developed a giant pincer movement to surround Israel and aim at Egypt and Arabia.

Khomeinist Shi’ites have always believed they are divinely entitled to Arabia, with the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.  Today they are closer to that goal than ever before, simply by waging proxy terrorist war in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.  Already they threaten Arabia across the Gulf.  The mullahs can choke off the world’s oil supply when the time is right, and nuclear weapons will keep them immune to retaliation.

Our puffed-up, preening hero is therefore the most dangerous character in history.  Bar none.  Never before has an American president surrendered to a fanatical suicide cult with nukes.

Now Obama tells us three lies.  One is that this sleazy deal is the best we can possibly get.  The second lie is that the only alternative is war.  The third lie is that Obama’s “framework” isn’t a “treaty” at all – so it doesn’t need to meet the constitutional standard of advice and consent by the U.S. Senate.

This is just like that used car salesman telling you not to bother reading the fine print.  Hurry!  Hurry!  Sign now, or you’ll miss your last chance!   This “deal” is so full of holes it’s hard to see any paper.  No sane person believes it.  Henry Kissinger and George P. Shultz took it apart in the Wall Street Journal last week.

Four-star admiral James (“Ace”) Lyons is telling us outright that Obama has let the U.S. government be penetrated and sabotaged by the fascist Muslim Brotherhood, which has long-proclaimed genocidal goals.  They are just like the mullahs.  If it were up to Obama, we would be threatened by nuclear Arabs as well as nuclear Iranians.  Fortunately, Egypt caught the Muslim Brotherhood in time and knocked down Mohammed Morsi, who is now in jail.

Obama commands the greatest military force in history, and he’s done nothing but sabotage them under cover of “peace” negotiations.  Prime Minister Chamberlain’s infamous appeasement with Hitler was at least negotiated in good faith on the British side. Churchill’s comment on Chamberlain’s appeasement should ring in our ears today: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

That is the whole point the left pretends not to know.  Obama is not avoiding war.  Everything he has done in the last six years increases the chance of war, which is already going on everywhere Obama tried to fix things.  The latest U.S. defeat is in Yemen, but we’ve knocked down the pillars of stability in Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Iraq.  In Eastern Europe we’ve endangered the Ukraine (now being torn apart by Putin), but Putin has threatened everybody in sight.

The only regime we’ve respected is Iran’s openly genocidal cult.  Obama tried to overthrow Israel’s elected government more than once, and Israel is stable today in spite of Obama – no thanks to his repeated attempts at sabotage.

Obama has never shown good faith in anything.  He is simply an enemy of this country and the civilized world.  “Why?” is irrelevant.  We can see it every day.

The U.S. Constitution, which Obama publicly despises, has a very clear definition of treason: “aiding and abetting the enemy in time of war.”  Judge Andrew Napolitano thinks that Obama has already crossed that threshold and can be charged with and tried for treason.  Any trial will expose a huge cesspool of provable betrayals by both Obama and Hillary Clinton, exposing many others in this administration.

At some point, the sane and sensible people of this country will have to have it out. The Senate is now trying to respond with SB 6615, the Corker-Menendez bill, now in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  It states that the U.S. Senate must be consulted on this suicidal surrender to the war cult. You can call your senators and House members.  If Congress does not stand up for its constitutional powers, Obama will get his way. We have to be heard. We must act now.

One of the most frustrating aspects of the loud and vitriolic debates over police shootings is the extent to which they ignore common sense and human nature. In the quest to find grand narratives, we’re too quick to discount the simple realities of how human beings react during times of stress, and we minimize the reciprocal moral and legal responsibilities that citizens owe police and police owe citizens.

“Let's say you live in the great state of Maine, down on your luck and needing some kind of social safety net to get you through. Would you say that spending at least 20 hours volunteering, working or participating in a work-training program is a fair trade-off for getting on the state's food stamp program? Even if you spend all your time playing "Call of Duty," surely you could carve out some time on the weekends to volunteer at the local animal shelter. But that requirement was too tough for 9,000 Mainiacs. Some 12,000 people were on Maine's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program before Jan. 1. After the government started enforcing the 20-hour rule, however, only 2,680 people stayed.”

“Some little bakeries operated by Christians, Muslims and Jewish bakers don’t want to place plastic figurines of a same-sex couple atop a wedding cake on the grounds that doing so violates their faith. The Indiana law says that these little, family bakeries don’t have to.  The Left, naturally, sees this as a big problem. (Forget about nukes in Iran. The Left is worried about wedding cakes in Indiana.)  Let’s be clear about what this half-baked “problem” is and what it isn’t. It isn’t that gays are unable to find a bakery to make a gay cake. Nearly all bakeries will. The people who finally found ones that refused were not actually looking to buy a cake, but to pick a fight.  And the problem isn’t that these rare religious bakers are out to prohibit gayness. They aren’t. They simply don’t want their private, family-owned businesses endorsing it.  So the real “problem” that the Left sees here is not that gayness is being prohibited, because it’s not. It’s that religion is being allowed.  To address this “problem” of religious people practicing their religion, the Left mobilizes their usual arsenal of shouting, name-calling, mockery and intimidation.”
